Well apart from Friday (!!! ) I'm guessing it must have been 1983 when there last a Heathens vs Hawks fixture! If you count the Kestrels version of Hackney then, what the last home Cradley/Hackney fixture would've been, er, 1987 I suppose... Though I don't know how anyone cares to count 1996... That was the last time there was a league side at the Wick but it was called the London Lions and the Heathens for their part, were in exile at Stoke... willp Posted May 31, 2011 Report Share Posted May 31, 2011 DUDLEY Heathens are looking to complete a quickfire double over Hackney Hawks at their adopted Wolverhampton track on Tuesday (7.30). The former Cradley club pulled off a fabulous 48-42 win over the Hawks at Lakeside on Friday and they are looking to make home advantage count in their latest National League outing. Boss Will Pottinger is, however, warning his side they can’t be complacent against a solid Hackney outfit who include ex-Heathen Barrie Evans. He said: “Barrie did well as a guest for us earlier in the season and he will be up for this. “Just because we won on Friday it doesn’t automatically mean we are going to win our home meeting easily, we will have to work hard and we need the fans to get behind us. “But the target is very much all three points on offer. We are making steady progress and just need to keep it going.” Admission is £10 adults, £6 concessions and £2 children. A full colour souvenir programme is available for £2. Fans should also not a full colour A3 Heathens poster has been printed and is available FREE from the HSSC track shop and speedway office. 21st century heathen Posted May 31, 2011 Report Share Posted May 31, 2011 With what should be a nice grippy track I'm hoping our boys' bursts from the back will lead to an entertaining meeting with a comfortable score line, for once this season! As the press release says we can't be complacent though. We were caught out at home last season and lost what should have been a reasonably comfortable win. Most of all tonight I'd like to see continued improvement by Perry and a big night for Ritchings would be welcome. In the last couple of meetings his scores haven't reflected the effort and determination he's been putting in. His one or two random flyers from the gate have deserted him meaning every heat seems a hard slog from the back. I like the way Ritchings has progressed this season, almost 'under the radar' with the exploits of Roynon, Morris, Armstrong and now Newman proving so eye-catching. He's a very tidy stylist who's surprising a few riders and even his fourth places seem on the pace. Well at one time it looked like i was going to get egg on my face as Hawks were winning 35 - 26, and despite the scoreline The Heathens took 4 x 5-1s in the last five heats; Hackney rode very well aptly led by young Shane Hazeldon, who was backed up by Barrie Evans and Ben Morley, in fact had it not been for falls when well placed by Shane and Barrie twice when in scoring positions the Hawks would have come away with at least 1 point which they deserved, although it was balanced out somewhat with EF by Ash when 2nd. For the Heathens Armo had what i would describe as an off night, Tom and Ash were not there usual self, Richard plugged away, and Danny looked on the pace, Stars of the night were Kyle and Darryl, Kyle some would say did what was expected from him, but MOM was young Darryl who scored 11 points inc a fastest of the night win, this i think is a sign of things to come from young Darryl who is showing Style, potential and may i say a maturity beyond his years, well done to ALL the riders and Thanks to The Hawks for putting up an excellent showing. This lad has come back from some awfull injuries and is showing guts and determination that should soon get him an opportunity in the premier league somewhere..I was not there but it looks like we let at least a point slip away, after Ben and Barry had given us a great start with two early 5-1s ..For the Heathens Darrel Ritchens put in a performance that showed his obvious potential..Gutted to have missed what must have been a great meeting.. It was A credit to both sides, British Speedway in general and NL Speedway in particular. I think the slick conditions played into Hackney's hands at the start and the Heathens were caught out a bit by the surface. As they became more dialled in, they started hitting the starts much more consistently. Terrific performances from several British youngsters (Darryl Ritchings in particular), some good racing and a last heat decider with the match points sorted on the last bend of the last race. The only down side was the gestures Shane Hazeldene got after from Dudley fans after his fall on the third bend in heat 12. Sure maybe he should have got up, he thought he was ‘helped’ to fall, but referee Graham Reeve probably made the right call. Have to also add the some of the starts left a lot to be desired. But the positives, far out weighted the above. The crowd out in high numbers to support the Heathen’s in there green tops and green caps , I purposely left my green cap in the car. Didn't see many Wolves jackets or hats. They have a great centre green presenter in Ian ‘Porky’ Jones’, good racing, great track shop selling nice bread pudding, a great atmosphere in the stadium, but Heathens, ‘where were the pork sandwiches vans?’ Those vans are so famous though out the speedway world, almost as famous as Gundersen, Hancock, Penhall etc…… Shame the Hawks couldn’t pick up at least a point, we deserved one I think. To have won would have been a fantastic achievement. I predicted a Hackney win at Lakeside, 3 points to boot, but unfortunately we where beaten on the night fair and square. It did look possible at heat 10 we could win the meeting, but alas it was not to be. We will gain from this no question. Good to see young British riders in both teams and think many will go far. Special mention though has to go to the Hawks Shane Hazeldene who has looked tremendous this season. Yes a great advert for British and NL speedway yesterday evening. But I guess the big question is, will the Heathens stay in the NL in future season or will they go PL or even further but is that a bridge to far? shad176 Posted June 1, 2011 Report Share Posted June 1, 2011 paul..what a good post the only reason he got some stick was because he did,nt try to get off track,barrie did the same and was sporting enough to get up thats all nothing malicious, glad you enjoyed your visit...its been like that since the first meeting last yr, we,re loving it having our team back and had some wonderfull meetings..hopefully more to come really hope the support for the "orcs" picks up as the likes of belle vue...hackney...the heathens can only be good for the future of speedway,we have been spoilt by the use of wolves great stadium, if it was,nt for them there would,nt be any heathens an amazing come back from our lads and you can feel hard done by for not getting a point...great meeting..all the best for the rest of the season Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
