Guest Hutchie
Cheers for the advice Rico. Still undecided as to how to travel yet. Air Polonia and then trains from Warsaw sounding favourite at the moment - even though the flight is cheap, the journey times from Berlin (either by road or train!) seem a bit too excessive. The last time I checked on a couple of sites the Pod Orlem was still showing availability aswell. Also checked with Travel Plus Tours (01473 217838) who confirmed they will be running a trip but they haven't confirmed prices or details yet. Any idea when the Air P schedules are published? Glad to try and help Hutchie. Re Travel Plus, without knocking them, it removes half of the adventure of the trip - much more fun finding your own way in a foreign land imho . Each to their own - it suits some people. As for Air Polonia I have e-mailed them asking when they are releasing their flights but haven't had a response as yet. If I find out I'll post something on here. In the meantime I'm just going to keep checking the site. Rico
pugwash
Thinking of going to Bydgoszcz. Anyone been? If so got any travel tips? Initial thought was to fly to Berlin and then car/train (Easyjet return flights to Berlin for £9.98 + tax at the mo!). Any other suggestions or Hotel info? Hey Hutchie Have been to Bydgoszcz for the last 4 years so hope I can help. Will definitely be going back there this year. I've always flown into Warsaw as it's worth a visit en route. Hotels a plenty, however they aren't overly cheap. Have considered going via Berlin previously but just always ended up going via Warsaw. I am waiting on Air Polonia releasing their summer schedules and hopefully be able to fly for a decent price. Lot seem reasonably priced at the moment as well if you want to book up well in advance. A train to Bydgoszcz is our usual mode of transport which takes around 4-5 hours depending on the train you get. You can buy tickets from a German website in advance, but we're confident enough about buying ours once in Poland (we've found that there is an English speaking ticket agent in Warsaw airport). For the extra cost first class is well worth it. As for hotels in the town we are booked into the Pod Orlem which is a lovely hotel. Not quite as modern as the City, however I've always found the City difficult to book. One year we had to wait till the last minute but the Pod Orlem came up with the goods just when we had visions of sleeping on the street. First year we went we stayed in the Ratuschowy, which was much cheaper but nowhere near as nice as the Pod Orlem. Depends on your budget / preference. Then the GP - atmosphere is always amazing and it might be something different this year after Tomasz's defection - I'm sure the locals will still be right behind him though. Keep an eye on the SGP site and you can book tickets in advance. Hope the above helps. If you need anything more specific give me a shout. Rico RICO. I am going to try the Warsaw-Bydgoszcz rail connection this year. Have you any approx idea of train times and is there a return train Byd- Warsaw on sunday? Rico
RICO.I am going to try the Warsaw-Bydgoszcz rail connection this year. Have you any approx idea of train times and is there a return train Byd- Warsaw on sunday? Check my posting further up the page - it contains a link to the Polish Rail Site. There will be trains on the Sunday from Bydgoszcz to Warsaw. Might be worth your while hanging around if there's a league match in the vicinity on Sunday (Torun or Pila for example). Guest Carp
A couple of Bydgoszsz questions... Q) What's Bydgoszsz itself like? Is it worth spending a couple of days there to see the town? Q) How reliable are Polish Railways? Is it reliable enough to get the train back from Byd....(sod it) Bidgosh to Warsaw on the same day you fly back without fear of missing ones flight? Being honest there isn't a great deal to see in Bydgoszcz itself. Don't get me wrong, it's pleasant enough and has a nice market square etc but it isn't a tourist hotspot. Here's a link to the official Bydgoszcz Site which gives you some info on the city. Have a look around the net on sites like Virtual Tourist and the likes and you can see what both people who live there and travellers think of the place. I'd hate to think people took my word as gospel Depending on your arrangements Warsaw is definitely worth taking at least a day to wander around. As for the trains, I'd suggest that they are as a rule pretty reliable, however obviously give yourself plenty of leeway for catching your plane. I'm sure you'd do that here as well. From experience I've only been delayed once and it wasn't too long, perhaps 1/2 hour or so, but other than that they've been bang on time. The bit im missing in the arrangements is the train between warsaw and bydgoszsz - so im gonna check out that site you posted now Edited January 18, 2004 by Splatty
witchnut
When I was investigating travelling out there I found a coach company on the internet (not an organised trip) that does a scheduled service from London to several polish cities for about £100. Problems as I saw them were that I would have to go out on a Thursday and Back on a Tuesday, and that it still reqd a short train/local bus link up at the other end. madame muck
Can't agree more with you. I've been too krsko once and bydgoszcz twice now, they are without doubt the best gp's to go to. The tracks are very similar and produce good racing, also the atmosphere is excellant. Cardiff is good but these two venues are even better, thats why i'm going to them again this year. Joanne
Wanting to go to Bydgoszcz that much that I've booked 5 days off work for the GP. Anyone who is thinking of going to the GP alone or as a group can tag on with me/keep me company (just don't follow me, I'm bound to get lost). Would take my best buddy Pawprint but I reckon there will be too many fireworks for her Now where do I start looking to book this trip
Papa Bazarou
You must meet Uncle Rico over there. Papa Bazarou will vouch for my integrity Rico Yep you're harmless enough ! How's things going ? I've gotta admit that you cannot beat Bydgoszcz GP weekend having been twice now, 3rd time looking a strong possibility this year. Hotel Brda, Bydgoszcz kebabs, the Elwood troupe, PKP state railways, Tomek Gollob, the stadium, the build up, the atmosphere, the racing, the locals, zloty & pivo, ! Check the pictures at the following site (49 JPG's) http://community.webshots.com/user/papabazarou Edited February 5, 2004 by Papa Bazarou
Rico
How's things going ? Good thanks Papa B ! I hear you e-mailed Tomek. Thanks for putting the photos online. As I missed out on the Gniezno trip it was interesting to see the track - looks a good 'un. Whilst writing it's worth noting that Air Polonia have released most of their summer schedule - I managed to get a weekend return to Warsaw for £38 in August, just for fun. Don't think I'll be using them on GP weekends though. Their website is here Rico
Joanne
Rico, I've just had a look at the website to see how much. Wow, what a bargain. As there only seems to be one plane per day, which days do you suggest to be able to catch trains etc? I don't want to fly back on the Sunday and theres no trains to get back to the airport

I don't want to fly back on the Sunday and theres no trains to get back to the airport Check the Polish Rail Webiste Joanne. There is a 9.05 that gets into Warsaw at 12.55. If you go with that then clearly you won't be partaking in the usual post-meeting parties after Bydgoszcz Rico
Joanne
Thanks for that Rico. I was going to say how do you know I'm not staying for the all night drinking session but you know how much I'm not a party animal, don't you But I suppose that train is a bit early anyway and I wouldn't like to have to catch a train and a plane anywhere in the world on a Sunday . So far my plans are to fly on the 16th, stay in Warsaw and then train it to Byd on the Friday. I would travel back on the Sunday afternoon staying in a hotel at the airport for the early morning flight on the Monday. Theres just one thing, how far is the airport from the train station and there seems to be three train stations, which one is the right one? Is it the one with 0 connections to Byd? Questions over, well for now anyway

It must be around 5 miles to the airport at a guess, but should only cost 30 zloty at most. You've just got to be careful which taxis you take when coming out of the station, some bandits around. Make sure you find out your price in advance of getting in or that he is on a meter. Is that enough info Joanne ? Rico
Joanne
Thanks, Rico. That'll do. I did find out a few more bits of info this afternoon. Taken from a travel website: Getting to town. By taxi will cost from 20zl upwards. There are three taxi stands in the arrival hall, all accept credit cards and charge an initial fee of 5zl. Hotel Sobieski and the Sheraton have fixed price taxis (available to non-guests) and charge 40zl and 50zl respectively. The bus to the city centre is N°175 and the stop is on the fourth island outside the terminal building. The city buses stop at the red bus shelters and Warsaw Central station is 16 stops from the airport. Buses run regularly between 04:58 and 22:35. After this there are two buses per hour (at night the N° 611 bus runs to Warsaw Central). Tickets can be bought from the RUCH shop or from the machines outside (coin operated only). Remember to buy a ticket for your luggage.
