In the far off days when Speedway could boast a multitude of stars Ian Williams the brother of Fred and Eric who did not reach the same heights, broke the Wembley track record during a second half event.

I lived within walking distance of the old Wimbledon Plough Lane track in the late fifties and early sixties. I was there the night that Peter Craven beat our home team hero Ronnie Moore in the Golden helmet match race. He set a new track record of 63.8 which beat the old record by quite a bit. Peter was an amazing rider and represented Belle Vue. So tragic that he died in a racing event. In those days Peter, Ronnie and Ove Fundin were very dominating.

This is an interesting topic, could the information be brought up to date before the season starts?

Yes, it's my intention to get this as much up to date as I can!

It's not that easy as some clubs don't have the data on their website (and of course I rely sometimes on friendly users to offer historical data!)

Not forgetting a certain Mr Barry Briggs of course as well as Bjorn Knutson.

Good point. Briggo was amazing and had a spectacular career. I think Knutson is unfairly overlooked to some degree because of his brief career, retiring at 28. He might have had more success internationally vs. domestic (not to belittle the latter)

Is Peterborough the fastest track in the country. Working on track records of Belle Vue, Sheffield and Peterborough which appear to be the three fastest tracks, the respective speeds are Alwalton 68.3 mph, National Speedway Stadium 67.4 mph, and Owlerton 65.8 mph. I can't remember what Exeter's record finished but I believe that was the fastest of all. Are there any others that I don't know of.

Crewe was fast!

Wasn't Barry Meeks once credited as achieving the fastest (mph) when he broke the Crewe Track Record?

Yes, I seem to remember something about that in 1969-70. But working out the lengths of the tracks against the track records Alwalton must be the fastest nowadays.

Can I suggest you ask for a new calculator for Christmas?

The famous Barry Meeks Crewe track record which stood in the Guinness Book of Records for many years was 54.62mph

When Mark Loram broke the Exeter track record in 1996 it was at an average speed of 55.11mph

After Exeter closed, Ricky Ashworth became the fastest man on a current track in October 2010 when he broke the Sheffield track record at an average speed of 54.66mph (faster than Meeks, but slower than Loram).

The Sheffield track record remains the fastest at 54.66mph

Belle Vue's N.S.S  is 53.37mph

King's Lynn is 53.17mph

Peterborough is 52.72mph

Ipswich is 46.03mph

Wolverhampton is 44.83mph

I don't need a new calculator, just a new brain. I realised that the speeds were excessive afterwards but it was too late to alter the post. It was a senior moment, and I shan't say what I did wrong, but I did get the speeds as you have rightly stated when re-calculating. My apologies

Being fairly new to this forum, I am gradually looking at some older posts. Well done Nutz, it must have been quite an effort to amass all this data. However I see that in the defunct tracks you haven't included the original Reading track, at the Greyhound Stadium, Oxford Road. I am sorry I cannot help with any details as it was so long ago I don't even remember who held the track record there.

There's a really good book with all the details of Reading track records.

There's a really good book with all the details of Reading track records.

67.4 Ole Olsen 15 May 1972

And, then of course was the Californian Poppies, who rode at California in England, (sometimes called Little California) near Wokingham, Berkshire. They closed before I became a speedway fan, although I did see speedway there in my pre-teenage years. I cycled from my home in Whitley Wood, near the now defunct Smallmead Stadium, to the fair etc. that was there at the time but saw a few heats before it was time to head home with my brothers. It was to be at least another decade before I attended another meeting- staying for the whole meeting this time-with a couple of fellow Reading FC fans who I had became friendly with, who were also speedway fans. We  often managed to attend an away footie match and then go to a local speedway track, but mostly attended the Racers meetings and also the Wimbledon Dons, which my wife still thinks of "her team".
