Team Gb V Australia Test Series

Recommended Posts

What kind of teams were these? Why were Nicholls and Ward not there?

I knew Richardson wasn't doing the World Cup but I didn't realise that extended to this kind of match too. I've always thought that any rider not riding for his country should be banned from all speedway.

It's totally pointless having international speedway unless full teams turn up. This was basically a challenge match between two select sides.

The Poole match seemed to be much better and a bit closer to proper teams.

Ward is in Slovakia for the semi-final of the Under 21 WC.

Are the update scores correct, please?

Decent crowd, warm evening, dirt round the outside, and some good racing but in some ways spoilt by the casual /disinterested attitude of some riders, not least , Batchelor who couldn't be bothered to come, and the Australian management who were content to go with r/r instead of getting someone else in, despite having most of the day to sort it..

Most riders seemed to ride as individuals, not as a team and although GB won I felt there was a palpable lack of team spirit for a number of reasons, However from my view it seemed like this:1

BOMBER Last one to arrive and didn't turn up until after the Aussies had been on their track walk. Never really got his head round it after that, and I was disappointed in him TBH.

BRIDGER Typical Lewis. He has enormous talent on two wheels but doesn't seem to be able to ride a really tough race when he gets a bad start. Cleared off and left Mear to fend for himself in heat 8 instead of trying to team ride Mear home. Fortunately Mear was able to cope but it was no thanks to Lewis who just wanted to get the win.

KENNETT Three absolutely superb starts brought three good wins but he was not so hot when he missed the gate. That's not a criticism because overall he looked good.

KING. More on the pace than I expected and took a win over Proctor and Sedgman but not able to hold his own under pressure from the real tough guys.

WOFFINDEN. Eratic. Incurred Barkers wrath when he had Barker off in Heat 7. Team rode brilliantly with Barker in heat 11 and had a good tussle with Roo-Boy in heat 13 but his obscene remarks to the St Johns lady who asked the riders to move out of the way when they were treating Adam Shields on the track really show he still has a lot of growing up to do.

BARKER Although he lacks the natural talent of Woffinden and Bridger he more than made up for it by sheer determination and application to his task. A bit of a surprise choice , I thought, for heat !5 but a superb start gave him a good win over Holder. He had the spark of determination that was generally missing from the GB side, except Kennett and Mear.

SUPER MEARIO. Probably riding at the upper limit of his present level of ability but some pretty smart starts kept him in the hunt and he acquitted himself well in his first international.

ROO-BOY. a typical Rory performance, professional, fast, courageous and every thing one expects from him these days but, much as I like him I don't see any indication that he will improve beyond his present level to genuine world class.

SHIELDS . A terrific win in heat 1 .In heat 3, off gate 4 he made superb run round the outside, came off off the bend very, fast, lifted and went through (under) the airfence..

Apparently damaged his knee. Taken to hospital , but, according to Paul Hurry " He is OK but he won't be walking home tonight."

WATT.Not the best rider on show but for me he was definitely the most exciting. A real full-throttle merchant who tried to ride the track as if was Peterboro. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't but it was always very entertaining.

BATCHELOR. - Presented his compliments and asked to be excused. Can't see that approach getting him into the GP's.

HOLDER. With due respect to the other riders Noddy was in a class of his own. Appeared to be unbeatable until heat 15 when he completely missed the start, although that in no way diminishes Ben's achievement.

SEDGY Out of his depth at this level, as expected, but gave it a decent shot and his time will no doubt come.

PROCTOR. Seemed to lack the spark of determination that is necessary at his level. Showed some grit early on but it gradually drained away as the meeting went on.

I note that sportowefakty and aktuellspeedway reproduced BOTH mistakes that I made in the updates (Sedgman & Proctor's scores in ht 2 and the identity of RR in Ht 14) :nono:

PS Any news on Adam Shields?

I have to say I was looking forward to last night,BUT it was all a bit of a damp squid in the end.

1)So many programme changes I nearly gave up !!!

2)It had more of a GB Select v Aussie Select feel about it.

3)The idea of Test/Internationals is great, but only really works if ALL the top riders turn up.

4)Cannot remember hardly any overtaking, some riders seemed to be going through the motions.

5)Sheilds getting injured early seemed to put a real dampner on it for riders and spectators - GET WELL SOON ADAM.

6)Crowd did not seem much bigger than a normal League meeting.

And I soon found myself not caring which team Won ????????

Wednesday's meeting was certainly better but I thought it was still ok last night.

The Australians can certainly blame their defeat on Batchelor. I'm surprised they couldn't find anyone else at all to come in. Cameron Woodward is normally happy to take last minute bookings and presumably wouldn't have been far away. I thought Sedgmen was a bad choice of cover for Doyle too, considering how many Australians there are out there.

Why they couldn't get Barker and King the right way round in the programme, I don't know, considering they had their averages correct.

WOFFINDEN. ... but his obscene remarks to the St Johns lady who asked the riders to move out of the way when they were treating Adam Shields on the track really show he still has a lot of growing up to do.

Care to share any more? On the face of it, that sounds pretty disgusting. I also noticed he was slouching around over the fence during the national anthems - hardly very respectful. Bridger was also fiddling with his bike some of the time.

I couldn't understand Woffinden's move in heat 7. He looked round on the back straight and saw Barker was going on the outside and yet still decided to change his line to the outside and ultimately cause Barker to fall. There was no contact but there wasn't much else Barker could do. Quite a strange one.

Overall I thought the series was pretty good and much better than having a one-off. It would have been better still if it had had three matches, as originally promised, if the pricing structure was as originally promised (also strange that Poole and Arena charged differently), and if riders like Richardson and Crump had been involved.

would of still won as he is on the way down now  thought he didnt want to ride for aus anymore now B)

He maybe on the way down but as he is so high up it's going to take him a long time to fall.

Top 3 in the world for a whole decade.. I'd be quite happy with that.

R/R? Seriously? It's not as if theres a lack of Australians in the country :D

This just about sums up British Speedway's inability to take control of anything these days.

Lack of info, lack of publicity, one test going missing, insulting it's own riders and managers causing them to quit, and the biggest joke of all, rider replacement for an international event.

On top of all this they fail to enter a team in the U21 World Cup.

BSPA are sucking the life out of British speedway.

Posibly true, but we at poole did a lot to publicise the meeting. But you can't fault our boys in the two meetings that have been run.
