I think you're deluding yourself if you really believe that. None of those riders was capable of holding a place in the top eight of the GPs last season and the Poles will be weighing in with three of the top four of the GPs, assuming Holta has made peace with the authorities. The SWC is a bit of a non-event this year. Look what the Poles did to Denmark in Gorzow last year.

Ladyluck last season is last season and poor or good performance then does not mean that all riders will do the same this season. Personally i think that AJ, LIndbäck and THJ will be better this season

then they were last year. LIndbäck have started this season really well. Regarding AJ, already before Bydgoszcz, last season, he had employed Carl Blomfeldt as his chief mechanic and possibly also as engine tuner(?).

I thoroughly enjoy the world cup as well. But, considering the World Cup is supposed to be a team event I can't understand why they have a format that only has one rider from each team per heat.

I also can't understand why Poland keep getting home advantage in the final.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Not always. At the minute the Poles alternate with the Danes. Why? Well, because they want to stage the event and Polish cities and clubs are willing to cough over the readies to BSI Speedway for the privilege of hosting the race-off and final.

Only because Poland and Denmark seem to be the only two nations interested in organising the race-off and the final - I really would not mind the final in UK or Sweden or somewhere else for a change.

Britain hasn't seemed interested since Peter Oakes made a bit of a fool of himself - and the BSPA - by insisting the 2009 race-off and final would be at Brandon in spite of BSI's pre-existing contract with Leszno.

Maybe the new Belle Vue stadium could change that when it's built.

From the images I've seen that place looks like it's crying out to stage a world class event.

I'm sure any proposal would be favourably viewed by BSI and the FIM. It is getting a trifle tedious alternating between Vojens and a Polish venue (the last time it was staged outside of Vojens or Poland was 2006). Interestingly, since the WTC was reconstituted as the SWC the final has never been staged in Sweden. Other suitable venues, although not strong teams, would be Germany, the Czech Republic and Russia (who have a good team currently and could have an outstanding one in a few years).

  • 3 weeks later...

This weekend sees the final team decided for the SWC rounds. The meeting in Landshut on Saturday will provide the fourth Nation for the round in Vojens.

Interestingly, the hosts have left Kevin Wölbert out of their squad, going instead with Smolinski, Hefenbrock, Fächer, Stange and Kroner.

I would have thought that Kevin would have been a better option than a couple of the riders in their squad, but maybe it's not a track that he favours...

Does anyone know who the USA will be using in the match? I haven't seen anything naming their team yet.

As far as I am aware Greg Hancock will be riding along with Ricky Wells, Tyson Burmeister and Ryan Fisher. These three will be heading out after the Coventry v Wolves meeting on Friday.

But for the life of me I cant think of a fifth name!!!

Sorry - didn't see Ladyluck's post. So Bryce is staying after his U21 run-out.

These lads (and Greg) will be riding with passion and a heavy heart this weekend. Wishing them all the best for a safe and successful meeting xxxx

Matze Schultz replaces Tommy Stange

As for Kevin. There are "issues".The reason given is that Kevin will miss practice, but there is more to it than that :)

Oooh....So Greg has returned to the SWC fold?

Not sure if it will be enough to get them through, but it's gotta be better than the 4 man team that they were forced to use last year after his late call-off.

Sounds intriguing, but I guess us normal fans wont ever hear the real story...

If Germany qualified anyway, do you think Kevin would be invited into the team for the "real competition" or is it something that would keep him out of that too?

There is no secret to it at all. The SWC meeting would interrupt his Premier League schedule and he says he has to earn a living from his speedway racing. He won't earn much from riding for Germany in this meeting, and the traveling from and back to the Uk for one day between a couple of PL meetings would be a problem, too. Wolbert has asked the German manager Rene Schafer to leave him out for this qualifying round. He would have been an automatic choice if he was available, and he will be considered for selection in the future.

Thomas Stange, too, has now asked the team manager to leave him out. He was in teh originally named line-up. In his case, the call-up was always a bit controversial, since Stange has as yet not ridden a single meeting this season, since returning from Argentina in February. He has been kept out beause of work commitments of late and Schafer has dropped him on his own request. Stange'S place has now been given to the experienced Stralsund Northstars rider Mathias Schultz, a 2-times former German national champion.

The German team, with Schultz, Christian Hefenbrock, Tobias Kroner, Frank Facher and captain Martin Smolinski will surely be the favorites to win this meeting.

Finland should be their most dangerous rivals, captained by world long track champion Joonas Kylmäkorpi.

The Ukraine would have been a force to be reckoned with, but for some injuries to key riders Andryi Karpov, Aleksandr Borodaj, Vladimir Tejgel, who are missing this meeting. Still the Ukraine has some excellent young talents, as they ably demoonstrated in last Monday's win of the under-21 SWC round.

The Landshut track, at 400m length, will not suit the Americans at all, Hancock excepted. Sadly, I can't see them finishing anything but last.
