frenchy
Hi, Can anyone confirm the nickname that Rochester rode under in 1969 ? I've got them down as the Bombers but I'm not sure if I'm transposing Romford's nickname on to them (BTW before anyone pulls me up, Rochester did ride 4 matches under the banner of Rochester before decamping over to Romford). Cheers.

norbold
Yes, definitely Rochester Bombers. Pete Lansdale was an ex RAF gunner and suggested the name. A competition was held in Rochester's local paper, the Evening Post, to design the body colour. There were 23 entries.

Parsoles, the info I have is as follows (all 4 matches were away and all were League matches) - Ipswich 17/4/69 36-42 (i.e. win for Rochester/Romford). Both Phil Woodcock & Barry Duke 4 rides 12 points. Long Eaton 24/4/69 32-46. Again Duke, in his final appearance for the club(s), 4 rides 12 points. Ross Gilbertson's debut for the Bombers. Middlesbrough (Teeside) 8/5/69 42-36. Bombers first defeat. r/r for Duke. Gilbertson 5-14 top scorer Canterbury 10/5/69 42-35. Again r/r for Duke & again Gilbertson top scored with 5-14. Opened at Romford on 29/5/69 with a challenge against Crewe, which the Bombers won 45-33 with both Woodcock & Gilbertson on 4-12 & Tony George on 4-11-1. (Info from various sources not programmes). Parsloes 1928 nearly
Many thanks. So as they rode League matches, Rochesrter DO deserve a mention in the history of Kentish Speedway clubs Let's hope before the year is up another club can enter that history.... norbold
Many thanks. So as they rode League matches, Rochesrter DO deserve a mention in the history of Kentish Speedway clubs If you'd ever read that brilliant book, "Speedway in the South East", you'd see that Rochester is mentioned as a Kent league speedway team. By the way, did you know there was speedway at Rochester in 1931 and 32 as well? though not in any league.

Naturally as you say a quite brilliant book of course Norbold and one that features a piccy of a certain Hammers No.1 on it's outside back cover giving the thumbs up to British Speedway - and boy didn't he grace our circuits over the years! Whilst I can swear on my brother's next door neighbour's cat's kittens lives that I was NOT around in 1931/32, I know that I DID attend the opener and the Ipswich match. As to programmes.... must sort the shed out ONE day! Can't guarantee they are there though! One last point, feel sure my late great ex-Mother-in-Law used to tell me frequently how cute Ben Howe looked on his MacDonalds bike! By the way, did you know there was speedway at Rochester in 1931 and 32 as well? though not in any league. I recall a conversation I had with an IT consultant in the mid 1990's who hailed from the Rochester area and was adamant that he had attended a Speedway meeting at Rochester Greyhound Stadium in the nineteen fifties. I was sceptical about this but the individual concerned was highly regarded professionally and not prone to making wild claims.
25yearfan
In the 1950's there was a few grasstrack meetings staged at dog tracks inside the greyhound track, so that may of been it? I know there was meetings like this at King's Lynns current home around this time when it was a greyhound track and a decade before speedway started up there in 1965! Was this at the same stadium (the Dog track) which was mooted as the home for the 'Bombers' in '69 then, norbold?

norbold
You haven't offended me at all. I just didn't see the point of your post. It would have been far more constructive to contact John and let him know that Rochester is missing from his site, instead of drawing everyone's attention to the fact that he has missed it.

It was just general conversation on my part. How do you know that I am not in contact with John Skinner? Would you like to vet for clearance any future messages I plan to send to the BSF? Things are getting ridiculous on here!

Guest
Here are two Links that give limited background to activity in the Rochester area (it would appear to be grass track racing) that might be of interest but I cannot see anything specific in regard to speedway in the area. http://www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2024904/photography_ProvidedCHO_TopFoto_co_uk_EU023785.html http://www.kenthistoryforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=12751.
