The guy you are thinking of is Lew Philp. Rode for Plymouth and possibly Bristol before that. Spectacular fence scraping style.

I don't think he ever rode again after the Sheffield crash (could be wrong there). I am fairly sure it was in 1963 as he was a regular in the Weymouth (non league) team at the time until injury part way through the season (99% sure it was due to the Sheffield crash).

Not sure who he was riding for at Sheffield as Plymouth had closed after the 1962 season. Could have been Exeter as I think he was a west country guy.

Hope this helps.

I remember the Crash being a bad one but cannot remember the details. The name sticks out in my memory though because of the crash. Another crash that was to stay in my memory was when Chris Julian hit the home straight fence! I rushed to the pits and got there in time to have to see him stretchered off the track. He had blood coming out of his mouth and he had terrible laboured breathing. I was around 11 at the time and thought he was a gonner! It turned out he had concussion and fractured ribs. One had punctured his lung I believe.

Scared the living daylights out of me. Luckily I was destined to not see any fatalities at any speedway meetings I have attended. I hope that continues!

He was riding for St Austell at Sheffield and I think that this was his one and only meeting for them possibly his one and only ride.

Yes I was a regular spectator at Weymouth at that time. Did not get involved with the Supporters club and other "off track" work (mainly at Lew Coffins training schools) until 1968.

I do remember yourself riding at the Wessex then as well as others like John McGill, Bill Billman, Ray Cousins etc etc.. Ray Wickett was a cut above most of the others at that time so when he rode he was regarded by us locals as a bit of a super star, so was Pat Flanagan.

Great memories of a time when the track ran because of John Pilblads sheer love of the sport and the tireless work of local fans like the Palmers and Lou Symons. I know that they were always appreciated as I got to know most of them very well later on and they always spoke very highly of the way they were treated and respected by John.

Hello Tom,

Hope you are O.K., The meeting certainly stuck in my mind as the rider in question was down as Lew Phelps and he was programmed at reserve for the St. Austell side. Unluckily he hit the fence halfway down the back straight and came to a very abrupt stop then fell onto the shale followed by his machine which seemed to pin him down. The reports after suggested that he never mounted a bike again, such was the seriousness of the accident. I have the prog. somewhere in my collection in the loft but owing to just having come out of plaster I can't climb up the ladder yet to find it. The Gulls that night were made up of I think: Charlie Monk, George Major, Glynn Chandler, Ray Wicket and some I can't at present remember. When the ankle permits I shall seek it out and report thoroughly. Rod Haynes.

The meeting in question was Sheffield v St. Austell in the Provincial League on July 18, 1963.

Sheffield won 44-34 with Clive Featherby and Tommy Roper scoring 11, Ron Bagley 8, John Dews 5, Alan Jay 4, Ken Handscombe 3 and Tony Robinson 2.

For St. Austell Chris Julian had 10, George Major 9, Ray Cresp 6, Glyn Chandler 5, Trevor Redmond 4, Ray Wickett 0 and the unfortunate Lew 0.

Lew spent many weeks in hospital in Sheffield and tried again at Weymouth in 1964 but quickly retired again.

Lew passed away in 1995 or thereabouts.
