I've got conflicting information regarding the result (and heat details) for the Wombwell v Stoke match on the 27th August 1948. Some sources (the team files from the Speedway researcher website) state that this was a League match which finished 53-31 to Wombwell. However, the year file on the same website as well as Howard Jones's 'Complete History of Stoke' both show that this was an Anniversary Cup match that ended 58-38 to the Colliers (which I suspect is the true result). In addition the Researcher team files give details of two other league meetings where Wombwell was at home to Stoke (teams rode each other twice home and away in the league this season). Would you like those as well? How are you guys able to track down this data, its amazing e.g. Norbold do you have complete sets of Speedway News or have you photocoped stuff from Colindale?? I went there once and found the staff most helpful. BTW did Alf Elliott ride in those meetings?Always great to read these posts from the "old days" and its great that folks are still doing research on this. Try the defunct speedway tracks website, it might have more info. Wombwell also raced in the League circa 1929 (sorry but don't remember details so can't recollect if it was at the same venue as the 47-48 team). I do have a number of complete year volumes of Speedway News. My earliest is 1934. As it happens one of the complete volumes I have is 1948, the year in question. Reading old copies of The News I am struck by the erudite nature of the columnists and the vocabulary used. I think it shows how much more literate folks were in those days-reading the Speedway News is like reading The Times newspaper of today-and don't get me started on the writing in the sports mags of today. I went with a man who used to stand on the first turn at Owlerton and took me under his wings when I first started going to see the Tigers. He tried speedway and gave me the old handlebars from his bike which I kept for years. Unfortunately I cannot remember his name. Would be great to know what he is doing these days. He would be in his sixties or older now. What I do recall was that the track had been well prepared by I think Phil Hattersley who's name came up earlier on. Apparently, the finest rider to grace the training session was none other than Bob Paulson during some of his earliest speedway outings. clevelandbay Posted May 4, 2012 Report Share Posted May 4, 2012 Out of interest Tim Swales took his first rides on a speedway track at Wombwell in 1964. When Ron Wilson brought league speedway back to Middlesbrough in 1968 Tim was one of the first local lads to emerge from that era. From memory he started to appear regular in 1969 and was a fixture in the team until 1974 when his business interests conflicted, he initially chose Scunthorpe at Quibell Park on Monday evenings but it soon became obvious it wasn't going to work out so he joined Sunderland instead. We had Bruce Forrester, Dave Durham & Pete Reading loyal to the club for a number of years and it was a great time to be a supporter. I sometimes wish I could bring such halcyon days back.
