Wasn't there site chatter sometime back on here about a walkabout on the site of the old speedway at what is now parkland in Peckham. Might there not just be time to get that linked in as well to the evening's event - and what exactly will that be? Are there going to be NX relics on display or what. This all seems very low key and not especially well thought out. If it's on and looks worth going to be I will be coming up from Ashford in Kent but want to know just what's ahead and not waste my time. My hope is that its something worth going to.

The New Cross Speedway was next to Millwall's football ground. The speaker has recently had a book published on the subject, Out of the Frying Pan.

Just thought I'd better come out of semi-retirment to put this thread straight...

 

The Lewisham Local History Society are meeting at the Methodist Church Hall, Albion Way, SE13 at 7:45 on FRIDAY 26 NOVEMBER to hear a splendid illustrated talk on the history of New Cross Speedway given by the author of "Out of the Frying Pan". Unless other people bring them, there will be no relics and there will be no walkabouts.

 

I don't know what kennylane thinks is not well thought out, but maybe he ought to contact Paul Newing, the Chairman of the Lewisham Local History Society, with his suggestions for improvements to the evening.. He can be contacted through www.lewishamhistory.org.uk

My comments was when I thought this was a speedway organised event and not something by a local group most of who have probably never seen speedway let alone gone to NX which was 57 years ago when it shut down. That was my opinion on the organisation because I remember Jack Blanchard on here somewhere writing about a reunion of old NX supporters and having a walk on the old track site and thought this could have been put together but this don't seem like a meeting of old NX fans at all to me. I'm certainly not going to be coming all the way by train from Ashford just to hear people talk about a book that came into the market about two years back. And I dpn't see why I should get the organiser to try and get relics and stuff about the Rangers on display either.

I suppose they can but its not a speedway reunion as my first impression of it was but just something about a book on the Rangers. Whats that about the track walkabout as Ive put up here earlier as a good idea that should have been put with the talk plus to get old NX memorbilia to be shown - even a bike and race jacket as well.

I think you'll find it shut down 47 years ago, not 57.

I think you'll find the talk is about the history of New Cross Speedway not about a book.

I think you'll find it's always easier to complain that other people are not doing it right rather than actually do something about it yourself.

 

It seems to me the fact that a local history society wishes to have a talk on speedway is something we should welcome and encourage not moan that it's "not especially well thought out."

 

And yes, davidba, everyone is welcome to come. The programme I have for the Lewisham Local History Society says at the bottom, "Visitors welcome - Donations invited at the meetings." I look forward to seeing you there.

I thought it would be a good idea to have a meet with like minded individuals at the site of the track and maybe have a pie and a pint in a local pub. If I recall, others wanted to make more of it and some less but there was not a consensus. Then Norbold’s talk came up and though nothing has been organised along these lines by myself, I would not have thought it beyond the bounds of possibility that those who want to attend his talk, and also meet at the site of the track beforehand, maybe in the afternoon, do so.

Norbold, I hope the talk goes well! Wish we had this sort of thing this side of the pond.

 

Was going to comment about wether or not the speaker was a relic but thought better of it!....... oooops! Got to stop thinking out loud.

 

Enjoyed seeing the photos of the Tom Farndon get together at his grave. When we were over four years ago we had time to kill before going to Coventry so we went looking for Tom's grave. Had a devil of a time finding it and when we asked the locals nobody seemed to know who we were talking about. Not surprising really!

 

Really glad to see that we don't forget the old timers. Only started to go to speedway in 1960/61 but sadly miss those days.

Bit too far to come over from Toronto-but New X is one track I would really like to have gone to, so hope everyone has a good time. Imagine if the old New X team could see the Old Kent Road today-they would think they were doing their National Service in some far flung corner of the Empire, which I guess parts of the Old Kent Road have become -PS Tigertom have you changed from a Sheffield fan to a Newport fan??

Bob I am both!.... I will always be a Sheffield fan and while Kyle is riding I will be a fan of the team he rides for.

 

Makes it hard when Kyle is riding against the Sheffield Tigers!

I've been rapped about my previous remarks concerning the New X night and it's been suggested I might have done more to organise some of the support factors I said should have been implemented in regard to it. But the first I knew of it was when I saw the message on here and that's just three weeks from the event. Also I don't know anyone involved in this sort of thing. But I'm sure had we known about the night before it came up here that others would have been pleased to have done things to make it more than just a talk but things have been running against doing something because of the low time factor between the first message about the talk and when it would take place. With a good time span and based on what interest there has since been about the talk it seems that a golden chance to rekindle more memories about NX have been lost. May I ask just when and where the Lewisham History Society planned to make public more about the talk? I wish it all success of course.

Sorry, kenny, I don't know what the Lewisham Local History Society's plans for publicising the event are. I have been asked along as a guest speaker, that's my only involvement in the event. The society meets every month with speakers on different subjects of local interest. If they are anything like my own local history society they will advertise their meetings in the local press and maybe local radio.

I wasn't on as a site member back then so this is news to me. I looked and found some people then wants to see stuff and gettogether about NX linked but it went to be a debate about pubs and wine bars and even a pub near West ham speedway so things to start to get off their first sort of topic. Never mind maybe one day we'll get a real NX reunion before all the old fans die off something like the Wokingham California speedway does each year is an idea to consider for.

i think a london speedway reunion for fans of all the capitals clubs would be a good idea. the chances of the sport ever returning to this great city seem remote to say the least.
