GRAND SPEEDWAY FINALE -- BORDERNAPOLIS AT BERWICK – 12 DAYS TO GO!

Following a largely-successful, but ultimately injury-wrecked speedway season, Berwick’s speedway Bandits will ring down the curtain for 2010 on October 23rd by staging the annual Bordernapolis Handicap.

“We have been busy selecting riders for the meeting from a lengthy list of applicants” explained a club spokesperson last night. “As is our custom, we will only release the names of invited riders who have agreed the contract to race – no false promises!”

Already the Bordernapolis roster has the names of American Ryan Fisher alongside two Australians, Glasgow ace Travis “Moose” McGowan and Elite Leaguer Ty Proctor of Wolverhampton listed as definite starters.

“We do have more confirmed names now – the ultra-popular wee Finnish rider Tero “The Hero” Aarnio will be here on the 23rd, alongside Belle Vue’s northern star James Wright – who was crowned Scottish Open Champion back in March this year – our own Craig Branney and another very likely little fellow, British Under-21 Champion Joe Haines.”

While club officials continue to compile the 16-rider roster for the event, commercial matters continue to be addressed.

“We have had a setback or two in setting up such a big event, with Bandits’ co-owner John Anderson in hospital (see below)” explained the club’s commercial guru Julie Newton.

“This has precluded our signing up as many race- and rider- sponsors are we usually have in hand two weeks before a Bordernapolis.

“With no racing at Shielfield Park before the big night, we are anxious for people – groups of fans or businesses – who would like to be entertained in one of our corporate hospitality lounges to get in touch with me at joules9@googlemail.com or by leaving a message on 07955-211618.

“It really is going to be the night of the speedway year – don’t be shy about checking with us for a deal!”

Club boss John Anderson, having suffered a heart attack two weeks ago, remains in the new Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where he will under go a cardiac procedure this week. News of his operation will be carried in further club bulletins, when further Bordernapolis competitors will be named, later this week

Great mix of riders that can gate and race which is just what is needed for this kind of meeting. Can’t beat seeing riders like Barker and Schramm trying to chase down people like Sike and Ingalls last year.

Nice to see Haines get an invite after his performance for Berwick at Newport.

Where would you say he ranks among the young Danes to have ridden in this country in the Premier League.

Acording to the latest ranking made by the Danish Federation, Nicklas is ranked higher than Jan Graversen, Jeesper Kristiansen, Klaus Jakobsen, Casper Wortmann and Anders Andersen. He is tranked on same level as Morten Risager, Henning Bager and Peter Juul. Peter Kildmand, Kenni Larsen, Claus Vissing and lasse Bjerre has a higher ranking.

Hmm very interesting if hes ranked there at only 17, lots of progress to come you would expect. Any idea if the lads looking to ride in Britain on a full time basis next year and this is why hes come over to try and win himself a team spot? After just checking some of his scores in Denmark this season, I very much hope the promotion here at Berwick take a very good look at him while hes over here, keeps good company over there and does very well for a rider of his age.

GRAND SPEEDWAY FINALE -- BORDERNAPOLIS AT BERWICK – 10 DAYS TO GO!

More star names have been added to the roster of competitors for the all-star finale to the Berwick speedway season as the Bandits ring down the curtain for 2010 on October 23rd by staging the annual Bordernapolis Handicap.

“We expect to have riders coming to this event from no less than eight nations,” confirmed a club spokesperson last night.

“In addition to the riders we’ve already told people about (see below) we are delighted to report that Australian Rory Schlein will be returning to – as he puts it – defend his title!”

Rory – who races for Peterborough in the Elite League – won the title in 2008, but a prior commitment prevented “Roo-Boy” returning for last year’s Bordernapolis. Now he is back, and aiming to take back a title he quite correctly points out he didn’t lose on track – just loaned out for a year!

Also named today are Bandits’ skipper Paul Clews, his energetic Polish team-mate Grzegorz Strozyk – who performed well in the team’s final away fixture at Newport last week – Swedish ace Magnus Karlsson (who can forget his superb 2009 maximum around Shielfield Park?) and former UK Under-21 Champion David Howe, who is enjoying a purple patch of form as the season winds down.

“We will be maintaining our promise to locally-based Hungarian Tamas Sike,” said team manager Ian Rae. “When we staged the National Junior League Riders Championship last month, the winner was promised – at the very least – a reserve berth on Bordernapolis night. Tomas won the event, and is straight into the programme, currently as first reserve!”

The Bordernapolis is now a prestige event, granted FIM status by speedway’s authorities, and this will allow the Bandits to invite one or more overseas riders who have not previously raced in the UK to contest the event.

“We have our eye on a couple of likely lads” admitted Ian Rae. “We will announce their names before the weekend.”

The riders named today will join again American Ryan Fisher, Glasgow ace Travis “Moose” McGowan and Ty Proctor of Wolverhampton (both Australians),popular Finnish rider Tero “The Hero” Aarnio, Belle Vue’s northern star James Wright – who was crowned Scottish Open Champion back in March this year, Berwick’s Craig Branney and the current British Under-21 Champion Joe Haines.

While club officials continue to finalise the tantalising 16-rider roster for the event, commercial matters continue to be addressed.

“We have had a setback or two in setting up such a big event, with Bandits’ co-owner John Anderson in hospital (see below)” explained the club’s commercial guru Julie Newton.

“It really is going to be the night of the speedway year – don’t be shy about checking with us for a deal!”

Club boss John Anderson, having suffered a heart attack two weeks ago, remains in the new Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, having undergone a successful cardiac by-pass operation on Tuesday. “No complications” said a relieved family member last night. “He’ll be back, bossing us all around before we know it – and isn’t that good news?”

Seriously-injured rider Adrian Rymel has now been flown home to the Czech Republic to continue treatment and rehabilitation.

“Adrian is walking better, and further, every day” said a club official. “It is now his right arm and wrist which aren’t responding just so well – but he’s come such a long way in a short spell, we are all just so relieved.”

He makes a pretty good point his pass of Piscz going into the third bend at Berwick was pretty sensational, its a place where it is very difficult to pass at Shielfield so to do it Piscz shows how handy Rory can be around Berwick.

It is always interesting when riders come back to Berwick since Ian Rae took charge of the track, spoken to plenty riders who always go out their way to comment on how much better the track is now so it is scary to think what Rory could be like on the improved surface.

GRAND SPEEDWAY FINALE: BORDERNAPOLIS AT BERWICK – RIDERS FROM NINE NATIONS AT SHIELFIELD PARK -- SEVEN DAYS TO GO!

SPONSORED BY CORNHILL VILLAGE SHOP AND COFFEE SHOP

Riders from nine different countries will be racing at Shielfield Park on Saturday October 23rd in the final speedway event of the summer season.

“We’re saving the best ‘til last” agreed a club spokesperson yesterday.

“We’re really pleased with the way so many top-class riders have agreed to come to Berwick on what is a difficult weekend for many of them – and despite all the star names, a lot of attention will be on two brand new faces, neither of whom have previously raced in the United Kingdom!

“We will be welcoming a 21-year-old Polish rider called Borys Miturski, and also Nicklas Porsing, who is just 17 and comes from Denmark.

“Both are young and keen enough to come over here with no guarantees, trying to show us enough of their speedway skills to get offered a contract for next season.

“Well, we never say no to enthusiasm – and we’re looking forward to seeing what Borys and Nicklas have to offer next Saturday.”

The anticipated line up will be:

Rory Schlein (Peterborough & Australia), Lee Complin (Berwick & England), Magnus Karlsson (Scunthorpe & England), Borys Miturski (Poland), Ty Proctor (Wolverhampton & Australia, Grzegorz Strózyk (Berwick & Poland), Ryan Fisher (Edinburgh & USA), Paul Clews (Berwick & England), Tero Aarnio (Scunthorpe & Finland), James Wright (Belle Vue & England), Nicklas Porsing (Denmark), Joe Haines (Redcar & England), Travis McGowan (Glasgow & Australia), David Howe (Scunthorpe & England), Shane Parker (Somerset & Australia), plus reserves Tamas Sike (Hungary) and Greg Blair (Scotland)..

“In addition to the two newcomers, we are delighted to report that Australian Rory Schlein will be returning to – as he puts it – defend his title!” said Berwick’s speedway manager Ian Rae.

“He won the title in 2008, but a prior commitment prevented his defending it last year. Now he is back, and aiming to take back a title he quite correctly points out he didn’t lose on track – just loaned out for a year!”

Schlein is a former two-time Australian Under-21 Champion – a title also held in the past by Travis McGowan. Reserve Tamas Sike was the U-21 Champion of Hungary four years ago and little Joe Haines, from Bolton, Lancashire (“he was awfully upset at being called a Yorkshireman at another track” said Rae) is the reigning British U-21 Champion, which is a title previously held by David Howe.

In addition, three of the Australian competitors – Parker, Schlein and McGowan – were their nation’s U-16 Champions before moving on and up to senior racing.

“It is a classy field, all right” confirmed a member of the Shielfield Park management team. “However, despite so many big names on this starry, starry night, we can confirm that admission prices will NOT be raised on Bordernapolis evening.

“Other tracks can lump on an extra three, four or even five pounds at their turnstiles when the big guns come to town. We are Berwick Bandits, and we want as many punters as possible to be able to come to watch our last presentation of 2010 – so normal prices, folks!”

While other club officials continue to fine-tune the on-track events, commercial executive Julie Newton is pressing on with corporate sponsorship arrangements.

“We have just a few races, riders and smaller equipment sponsorships available – but only a few days to get these last few gaps filled up, and print credits in our match programme,” she emphasised.

“Any groups of fans or businesses who would like to be entertained in one of our corporate hospitality lounges should get in touch with me at julie@berwickspeedway.co.uk or by leaving a message with my minder Phil on 07955-211618”.

Very interested to see how Borys Miturski does at Berwick. Certainly has plenty of ability and races for Czestochowa in the Polish Ekstraliga, so certainly is no mug. Has won a fair few races at that high level this season, racing alongside Tai Woffinden at reserve over there. Also scored well for the same club in the Polish Junior league, which is strong competition in its own right given the strength in depth of Polish Speedway. Very excited to see how Borys and the young dane Porsing get on at Berwick, maybe the possibility of a new asset for next season if either of them put on a strong showing. Must commend the promotion on the lineup for the meeting, as it looks very well put together with the majority of the field in with a good chance of winning it, with a mix of entertaining riders, always love watching the Fish and Shane Parker do their stuff at Berwick, and the form Lee Complins in at the moment, he certainly cant be ruled out. :approve:

Superb

The Borndernapolis has a genuine “big meeting” feeling about it, it isn’t just a standard end of season open meeting. It is the meeting a lot of Berwick fans look forward to for weeks in advance and the line up for this shows why.

The grand finale to the speedway season at Berwick promises to be a truly international affair.

Riders from nine different countries will be racing at Shielfield Park on Saturday October 23rd – including two very bright young prospects, intent of proving themselves to the border promotion with 2011 in mind.

“We have invited 17-year-old Nicklas Porsing over from Holsted in Denmark,” reported a Berwick spokesperson. “He came over early, and raced a in a warm-up event at Stoke on Sunday evening – and came fourth, with a race win and four second places in front of some very classy riders!”

Also on Bordernapolis duty, and making his British debut, will be 21-year-old Polish starlet Borys Miturski.

“We have a good record of attracting Poles to Berwick” said team boss Ian Rae. “Stan Burza and the Rempala brothers come to mind from recent seasons – now here comes Borys, and it seems his Polish club – it’s called Czestochowa – are very excited about his coming over here, as they are making very big mentions of his trip on their website!”

Adding to the international flavour of Saturday night – the meeting is registered with the FIM to allow overseas riders to compete - will be Australian Travis McGowan who, although he has been competing in Premier League racing in Glasgow’s colours, is based in Sweden!

“True story” said Ian Rae. “Travis – nicknamed ‘Moose’ – lives in Sweden, and will be flying into Edinburgh, just to come down the A1 to race in our big event.

“Mind you, even our reserve riders are getting into the act

“Greg Blair, from Jedburgh, will be lining up on parade with the big guns on Saturday, full of confidence after scooping the pool up the road in Glasgow, where he won the coveted Heathersfield Golden Helmet from a field of younger riders, including a hotly-tipped young Dane.”

The anticipated line up will be:

Rory Schlein (Peterborough & Australia), Lee Complin (Berwick & England), Magnus Karlsson (Scunthorpe & England), Borys Miturski (Poland), Ty Proctor (Wolverhampton & Australia, Grzegorz Strózyk (Berwick & Poland), Ryan Fisher (Edinburgh & USA), Paul Clews (Berwick & England), Tero Aarnio (Scunthorpe & Finland), James Wright (Belle Vue & England), Nicklas Porsing (Denmark), Joe Haines (Redcar & England), Travis McGowan (Glasgow & Australia), David Howe (Scunthorpe & England), Shane Parker (Somerset & Australia), plus reserves Tamas Sike (Hungary) and Greg Blair (Scotland).

While other club officials continue to fine-tune the on-track events, commercial executive Julie Newton is pressing on with corporate sponsorship arrangements.

“We have just a few races, riders and smaller equipment sponsorships available – but only a few days to get these last few gaps filled up” she emphasised.

“Any groups of fans or businesses who would like to be entertained in one of our corporate hospitality lounges should get in touch with me at julie@berwickspeedway.co.uk or by leaving a message with my minder Phil on 07955-211618”.

Club co-owner John Anderson was discharged from Edinburgh Royal Hospital on Sunday afternoon, following a successful double by-pass cardiac procedure as recently as Tuesday.

“Best news of the week!” enthused a club spokesperson. “He’s made an amazing recovery, but we have warned him we don’t expect to see him at Shielfield Park for quite some time – he’ll be resting at home, regaining his health and strength, or we’ll all want to know the reason why!”
