Ron Bagley, Brian Davis, David Crane, Derek Battle, Sandy McGillivray, Ray Cousins, John Anthony all definitely rode for them. Ted Spittles and John Hook were their non riding reserves in their match at Weymouth but I don't know whether they appeared in other matches.

In researching the Metropolitan League be careful though as the it was not very strictly regulated and the occasional rider could appear for different teams from week to week.

Hope this helps.

Didn't Wal Morton - then 54 years old - ride in one Metropolitan League match?

Not necessarily. I know he rode that one match for Weymouth but, as I said in a previous post, the team line ups were quite "flexible" so he may have ridden for other teams as well.

Good old 'Wandering Wal of the Raceways' as he was known for his many tracks over a 32 year racing career.

Wal rode as reseve for Hackney for most of the 1963 season. Hackney at the time were said to have both the oldest and youngest riders in the Provincial League, Wal (aged 54) and Malcolm Simmons (aged 17) and both went out together in heat 4 (Simmons as no2 and Morton riding No 7). I think David Crane did a couple of meetings later in the season aged 16.

Thats right-David Crane was a rising star who never made it-I recall he rode for Sheffield in 1965-anybody know what happened to David?

  • 1 year later...

Not sure about "never made it" Bob. Seem to remember he had a decent career with Kings Lynn (and maybe others). Quite a spectacular rider to watch. Cyrils brother.

Think you will find that David was Cyril's nephew, actually.
