Isle Of Wight Vs Weymouth

c/o BSPA:

Tuesday, the top of the National Trophy Wightlink Islanders face Weymouth, never any love lost between the two teams and this one promises to be no different, a win and we are almost in our first cup final since 2004. Newport went and beat the Cats in Dorset on Friday in a League match, if we can beat them, their chances of catching us will be very slim. They are also without their number one Byron Bekker who crashed heavily against Newport and picked up a shoulder injury, they have a good guest however in Adam McKinna to replace the South African.

Bote the home matches start at 7.30pm sharp and big crowds are expected, our advice to fans is, if you want your usual spot, arrive early! Dudley will probably bring a lot of noisy fans, so if all the Island supporters can bring a friend, and can also make a noise, it will make for a great atmosphere and encourage the lads too, said Hunt.

Teams:

IOW; Paul Starke, Lee Smethills, Danny Warwick, Brendan Johnson, Nick Simmons, Dean Felton, Tom Hill.

Weymouth; Byron Bekker, Dan Halsey, Tom Brown, Karl Mason, James Cockle, Gary Cottham, Richard Andrews.

Updates will be in the usual place.

A few of us hoping to come over to the meeting can someone tell me about more about the thing where you buy your ticket and ferry transport.

Thanks in advance.

Jules M

Afraid I have never been, but the following from IOW's site:

CAR - The shortest route is to take the M275 off of the M27 towards Portsmouth and

then follow the signs for the car ferry terminal for Wightlink Ferry to Ryde. From the Ryde

terminal turn right, then left at the traffic lights onto A3054. continue onto Quarr Hill and

then on entering Ryde bear right onto Pellhurst Road. Then turn left onto Partlands Avenue

and then right into Ashey Road.

Wightlink Ferry services to the island also run on the Lymington to Yarmouth route. There is also

a Wightlink Flyer available. This is a foot passenger inclusive ticket. It includes return travel

on the Wightlink Fastcat from Portsmouth Harbour, return travel on the short train journey to

the end of the pier, travel by Southern Vectis bus to Smallbrook Stadium and entrance to

the Wightlink Islanders race meeting. This is £20.00 for adults including a programme and £8.50

for children (15 or under) excluding a programme.

Also re bus to/from the ferry if you went on foot from the Ryde Pier:

BUS - A special bus service runs from Ryde Esplanade to

the stadium returning immediately after the last race.

Times are as follows:

Leave Ryde Pier for Stadium at 18.50 hrs

Leave Stadium for Ryde Pier at 21.25 hrs

The above Bus times are applicable for Fastcat Sailings from Portsmouth at 1640, 1715, 1740, 1815 every Tuesday, March to September and on Thursdays in August.

This means that there will be no surface transport for anyone who purchases a Flyer ticket for the 1

8.45 sailing from Portsmouth.

To compensate, a 'reduced price' Flyer for the 18.45

crossing is available at £16.50 but no surface transport is available to the Stadium for that sailing.

Customers making their own way to the Stadium, by Taxi or other means, can travel back on t

he 9.25pm Bus

Info on Wightlink Ferries website here. Sorry I'm not more use!

Edit: Thanks for the update, The Abbott.

Updates can be found tonight here.

Weather: Hot, dry and sunny all day, and about time too!

Isle of Wight winning the toss, taking gates 2 & 4.

Heat Results

Heat 01: McKinna, Halsey, Starke, 5-1, 5-1, 70.9

Line Up: Paul Starke, Lee Smethills, Adam McKinna, Daniel Halsey

Comments: Smethills away well, but Starke stuck on outside and got filled in, before the Wildcats swamped a slowing smethills on back straight. Track a little tricky early on, so the islanders attempts to pass were sadly thwarted. Smethills retired.

Heat 02: Re-Run: Hill, Felton, Andrews, Cottham, 5-1, 6-6, 73.9

Line Up: Dean Felton, Tom Hill, Richard Andrews, Gary Cottham

Comments: Yellow demolishes tapes, so Richard Andrews will go off 15m in the re-run.

Re-Run: Andrews made the gate, and held off Hill on 2nd bend, before pulling a huge locker on the 3rd bend, letting (miraculously) the I.o.W. pair through either side of him!! Well clear after that, Cottham with no impression after the handicapped start.

Heat 03: Warwick, Brown, Mason, 3-3, 9-9, 70.3

Line Up: Danny Warwick, Brendan Johnson, Tom Brown, Karl Mason

Comments: Both number 3's away well, but Warwick had the run with the outside line to take the lead. Johnson struggling at the back, but getting closer and closer to Mason, before sliding off into the deep stuff on the last bend. Up and ok though.

Heat 04: Simmons, Cockle, Hill, Cottham, 4-2, 13-11, 70.7

Line Up: Nick Simmons, Tom Hill, James Cockle, Gary Cottham

Comments: Cockle gated, with Cottham behind him, but Simmons sliced through them on the 2nd bend for 2nd place. Hill then passed a struggling Cottham, before Simmons with an immense turn of speed rounded Cockle on the 2nd bend, lap 3, before clearing off to win by 15 bike lengths!

Heat 05: Warwick, McKinna, Halsey, Johnson, 3-3, 16-14, 70.7

Line Up: Danny Warwick, Brendan Johnson, Adam McKinna, Daniel Halsey

Comments: Halsey left at the tapes, but Warwick makes no mistake to pull clear. Halsey makes up for his poor gate though by overtaking Johnson on the last bend. He tried to go up the inside of him on the last bends, but ran out of legs.

Sponsored by Splod

Heat 06: Smethills, Starke, Cockle, Andrews, 5-1, 21-15, 72.0

Line Up: Paul Starke, Lee Smethills, James Cockle, Richard Andrews

Comments: Cockle with a tremndous start, but overhauled by Smethills on 2nd bend. Starke joined the party as Cockle went too wide on 3rd bend into the deep stuff, which allowed Starke to move inside him. Cockle coasted round last bends, still too far ahead of Andrews.

Sponsored by

Heat 07: Simmons, Mason, Felton, 4-2, 25-17, 71.2

Line Up: Nick Simmons, Dean Felton, Tom Brown, Karl Mason

Comments: Even start, but Simmons on the inside got 'taken by Mason. Brown, a shadow of himself from years gone by here, then took a tumble into the 4th bend fence, but was up in time to see Simmons overtake Mason on the 2nd bend, around the outisde, another superb captains move.

Sponsored by Merlin

Heat 08: Halsey, Cottham, Smethills, Hill, 1-5, 26-22, 72.9

Line Up: Lee Smethills, Tom Hill, Daniel Halsey, Gary Cottham

Comments: Very smart (and only just legal) gate by Cottham, before Halsey joined him at the front. From tapes.

Sponsored by

Heat 09: Cockle, Warwick, Johnson, Andrews, 3-3, 29-25, 71.2

Line Up: Danny Warwick, Brendan Johnson, James Cockle, Richard Andrews

Comments: Very close start between Warwick and Cockle, who just got the nod, but Warwick is pushing him hard, with Johnson ready to pounce as well. Cockle with too much speed though, 3-3.

Heat 10: Re-Run: Starke, Felton, Mason, 5-1, 34-26, 71.5

Line Up: Paul Starke, Lee Smethills Dean Felton, Tom Brown, Karl Mason

Comments: Lee Smethills excluded under 2 mins, Dean Felton replacing him.

Bunching on first bend, Brown on the outside and went down, stayed down (in protest) which didn't work as the ref threw him out. Could've gone either way.

Re-Run: Third time lucky, Islanders away, and Felton does a good job to block Mason on the back straight. Moment for the 2 of them on the 4th bend, but they carry on unscathed. From tapes. Mason slid off on final bend, remounts for 3rd place.

Nice celebration wheelie from Starke!

Sponsored by

Heat 11: Simmons, Halsey, McKinna, Hill, 3-3, 37-29, 70.2

Line Up: Nick Simmons, Dean Felton Tom Hill, Adam McKinna, Daniel Halsey

Comments: Hill in for Felton.

Simmons gated, the swine, so no swoops from the back this time. Halsey, whose ridden very well tonight, and McKinna are passengers, but keep the reserve change Hill at the back. From tapes.

Sponsored by

Heat 12: Re-Run: Warwick, Cottham, Brown, 3-3, 40-32, 71.1

Line Up: Danny Warwick, Tom Hill Dean Felton, Tom Brown, Richard Andrews Gary Cottham

Comments: Felton in for Hill and Cottham in for Andrews.

Warwick with his worst gate of season, as Weymouth go first and second. Felton came a cropper on 3rd bend, fell, and is exc. Felton up on his feet and staggering back to pits. May have been an engine problem as cant wheel bike off track?

Apparently Felton hit fence with his rear wheel, causing him to fall.

Re-Run: All elbows and messing about at start, but the Wildcats tactic doesn't work, as Warwick makes no mistake in the rerun to nail heat 12. Small piece of fortune for the Islanders there, but will it affect Felton in ht 14? Brown coasting at back.

- Small Interval with Ray Morton having a spin! -

Heat 13: Simmons, Starke, Cockle, McKinna, 5-1, 45-33, 71.3

Line Up: Paul Starke, Nick Simmons, Adam McKinna, James Cockle

Comments: Simmons with a stinker of a gate, but cut back under the 'cats, to get into third behind Starke and Cockle. He then went round Cockle on 4th bend with another stunning move, to give the I.O.W. a bit of leeway at the head of the meeting. McKinna lucky at back of race to stay on, doing a very slow, but nonetheless frightening wall of death on 1st/2nd bend!

Heat 14: MASON, Cottham, Felton, 1-8, 46.41

Line Up: Brendan Johnson, Dean Felton, KARL MASON, Gary Cottham

Comments: Karl Mason on a Tactical Ride.

Weymouth gate into a 5-1, and stay there, until Johnson tries too hard on 3/4th bend, and hits the fence. He stays down, and the race is awarded, as it was on the 3rd lap.

Ambulance out on track. Best wishes to Brendan, hope he's OK! (Updaters comment.)

Slight delay waiting for another ambulance to take Brendan to hospital.

Sponsored by Splod

Heat 15: Simmons, Cockle, Warwick, Halsey, 4-2, 50-43, 70.6

Line-up: Danny Warwick, Nick Simmons, Daniel Halsey, James Cockle

Comments: Cockle away, Warwick and Simmons fighting inside and out for the lead though. Simmons really winding it on, going wider and wider, until passing him on back straight, lap 3, scrubbing off speed by clipping the fence before cutting to the inside line!
