Resurgent Islanders take on Saints

With the Premier League Scorpions out of action for a couple of weeks it is the Jotun Paints Scunthorpe Saints who take centre stage at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday (6th August 7.30pm). They face the Isle of Wight Islanders with the visitors looking a much improved outfit in recent matches. Seasoned pro Lee Smethills has recently been added to their line-up and with Nick Simmons and Danny Warwick it gives the Islanders a very experienced top end. Their middle order sees teenagers Brendan Johnson and Ben Hopwood whilst a major factor in their improved form has been Dean Felton’s move to reserve.

The Saints are once again drafting in Richie Worrall, twin brother of Steve Worrall, in the absence of the unavailable Mark Burrows. He will line up at number eight with rider replacement for Burrows. Promoter Rob Godfrey is sure both twins will make the grade in the sport. “It’s great to see Stevie starting to pick up points in the Premier League and I’m sure this is just the beginning. He just seems to get better all the time and I’m sure his brother will progress equally quickly over the coming months. The Saints are a good team at the moment and it will be interesting to see how we get on against the Islanders on Friday. They have a wealth of senior league experience with Nick Simmons, Lee Smethills, Danny Warwick and Dean Felton so we will have our work cut out. It certainly has the makings of a good meeting and the times and racing in the National League are very close to those in the Premier League. With the Scorpions not in action at home for a while I hope the fans will turn out in numbers to get their speedway fix and support our junior development programme. These are the Scorpions of the future and if you add in Luke Chessell and Adam Wrathall we have a great crop of youngsters“.

The full line-ups for Friday’s meeting are expected to be (English unless stated):

Jotun Paints Scunthorpe Scorpions – 1. Rider replacement for Mark Burrows 2. Scott Richardson, 3. Gary Beaton (Scotland), 4. Benji Compton, 5. Gary Irving, 6. Steve Worrall, 7. Ashley Birks, 8. Richie Worrall

Buxton Hitmen – 1. Nick Simmons, 2. Lee Smethills, 3. Danny Warwick, 4. Brendan Johnson, 5. Ben Hopwood, 6. Dean Felton, 7. Tom Hill

Sadly wont be able to make it up for this, cant get from work to Scunthorpe in 2 hours flat. Hope it's a good meeting though, and the Islanders can perhaps steal a win? Hey, a girl can hope

Reported on IOW's Facebook page that Ben Hopwood was kept in hospital overnight after his high speed crash at Scunthorpe last night. Hopefully his overnight stay was just as a precautionary measure and I'm sure everyone wishes him well.
