Duplicate account locked but topic left for all to judge Good point but we race under the banner of Team GB because we are what it says on the tin .... Great Britain. Yes we are all English, Scottish and Welsh but we are all united under one kingdom and one name and we should all be proud to call ourselves British. The same could be said in Spain where depending on where your from you could call yourself Catalan, Basque or Galician but at the end of the day they are all Spanish and when Spain won the world cup the whole country celebrated no matter what region they came from. Before being involved in speedway we were 100% English and were annoyed with certain so called "GB" sportsmen from other sports who appeared to be anti english. However after the welcome and friendships we have formed in Newport, Cardiff and Glasgow we now consider ourselves both english AND british - We were equally as proud when "Land of hope and glory" the english anthem was played as if "God save the Queen" had been played If Team GB had won today I'm sure that speedway fans in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newport would have celebrated just as much as us English so lets all get behind Team GB and be proud to be from the Great nation we call Great Britain

Duplicate account locked but topic left for all to judge Team GB today represented Great Britain as I believe that the individual countries of Great Britain are not members of the FIM but GB is. There is no English leagues in GB, just British ones. England did not enter the SWC. There were indeed 5 Englishmen in the team today (or 3 plus a Cornishman and an Aussie if you believe some of the posts on here) but any GB rider can ride for the team. Without checking were Willie Lawson and Andy Tully not in the GB under 21 squad? To confirm your geographical understanding, Glasgow is indeed in Scotland (though as a Monarch I am campaigning to move it south for a few hundred miles ), Cardiff is in Wales and equally so, London is in England. To explain further - Scotland, England and Wales are all part of Great Britain hence the use of the Union Jack/Flag (there's a wee clue in the make up of the flag)for Team GB. Do you remember the winter Olympics a few years ago when 4 Scottish women won the gold medal - they were Scottish but were representing GB - GB won the gold medal - not Scotland! Finally - you did not speak to a SCOTCHMAN, but a Scotsman - Scotch is what we drink - in small quantities of course! I trust that this explanation assists you! They tried to incorporate the flag of St David... but it looked naff: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/99/New_Union_Flag_proposal_by_Liam_Roberts.png/800px-New_Union_Flag_proposal_by_Liam_Roberts.png Get off your high horse, not all from the Celtic countries of the UK are anti English. nonglak1
Why can't we have an English Elite,Premier and National league then perhaps we can be called Team England. In football we have the ENGLISH Premier league and i'm sure they wouldn't change it if Cardiff or Swansea got promoted. SarahLapworth
From an educated Yorkshire lady ! (Perhaps the lady part is a slight contradiction lol ) I do believe the above point is regarding the Union Jack flag which is in all fairness a compilation of the St George, St Andrew and St Patrick Flag. It is unfortunate there is no Welsh or green representation in the flag however this is due to Wales being legally annexed to England as it has been since the reign of Henry VIII in the 1530's ) Personally I would love to see the Queen with whippets and a pint of Stones instead of Corgi and a G&T Edited August 1, 2010 by SarahLapworth
kiwi
It gives you options when you lose. Andy Murray wins a round of tennis, he's British. When he loses, he's a Scot.

Just to expand on the History lesson, I believe that the Principality of Wales was first gobbled up by economic migrants/foreigners in 1301, under Edward I. When BigFatHenry's dad, Hal VII, a Welsh groom, grade A chancer and the founder of the Tudor Dynasty, flogged Richard the Turd (or Dick the Sh!t) at Bosworth in 1485 it restored the Welsh Monarchy, which ruled the southern bit of GB until the Scots took over in 1603, with the ensuing disastrous introduction of a Constitutional Monarchy as the Stuarts couldn't organise a Root in a Brothel. Peed meself at the mental image of Mrs Battenburg-Windsor (weren't her family Migrants?) with a whippet & pint of Stones - all she'd need then is her hair in curlers and a fag hanging out of her gob to audition for Coronation St! As for these moronic Little Englanders; its an open forum and has its good & bad points. One of the downsides is the juvenile standard of debate on some issues, (check out the SWC threads!) but it does serve to give us poor benighted Colonials the opportunity to have a giggle or two at the expense of the numpty one-eyed brigade. HenryW
What a bizarre thread, and what woeful English from the man campaigning for the English name. He does have one good point, the Union Jack shouldn't be getting used for GB. It should, of course, be this flag, as the Northern Irish are not involved in GB. Is it really so hard to understand that, even though the riders are all from one part of GB at the moment, there is only a single representation for the Nation? I wonder if the Californians whinge so much about them racing as USA for so many years
