And following the Islanders home victory on Tuesday, they head over to the deep, dark depths of Dorset (yes, I'm talking rubbish... hey, I have to try and make it sound even more interesting ) to take on the Wildcats at home. Hopefully the Islanders can put up a good show for themselves.

WEYMOUTH Weyline Wildcats suffered their biggest defeat of the season 60-32 at the hands of the Isle of Wight Islanders on Tuesday evening this week at the Smallbrook Stadium leaving them rooted to the foot of the league table. Tonight they have to pick themselves up on home shale at the Wessex Stadium 7.15pm start time in the return fixture.

 

The Islanders have moved up a place in the league table to 9th with Scunthorpe slipping to 10th position, three points clear of the Wildcats in 11th. Scunthorpe take on Buxton at home tonight and the Wildcats will be hoping that the Hitmen can do them a favour and win away from home, if so the Wildcats would need to win by 12 or more to move off the foot of the table with both clubs having raced the same amount of fixtures.

 

The Wildcats didn’t manage a heat advantage all evening in contrast to the Islanders five 5-1’s and four 4-2’s. The Islanders are without the services of Poole youngster and former Wildcat Brendan Johnson who raced to 11+1 on Tuesday as he takes his place in the British Under 18 final at Somerset. Latest signing for the Islanders another former Wildcat Lee Smethills joins Danny Warwick also a former Cat in the middle order, the experienced Dean Felton and Tom Hill fill the reserve berths and completing the Islanders are Ben Hopwood and Nick Simmons.

 

The Wildcats remain unchanged with skipper Tom Brown returning to form in the last two fixtures. Richard Andrews found the going tough on Tuesday after a good 7+1 showing at home against the Devils. Luke Chessell will be hoping for a few more points after scoring 6+2 in the last two fixtures. Gary Cottham will want to forget his nightmare trip to the Isle of Wight in a hurry. Likewise Byron Bekker who has suffered a couple of uncharacteristic performances during the last week will be looking for a bag full of points. Adam McKinna after making his debut last Saturday has weighed in with 14+2 from his first two meetings helping to balance the side. Finally James Cockle completes the Cats line up scoring 20+1 over the last two fixtures and is the only Wildcat to of lifted his starting average slightly.

 

Wildcats chairman Phil Bartlett said “After being beaten by the better side on Tuesday, we started off with mechanical issues for our top three before the meeting and everyone else was struggled with the track, so the lads have to up their game for tonight’s fixture. After the home track advantage for the Islanders racing such a big track compared to Weymouth this showed where their experience was over ours, we really need to put in a solid performance at home as we did in our last fixture against Plymouth.”

So if I stay in tomorrow then I reckon about 11pm. But if I go out and stand on top of Loxley Hill, I may just get a signal and get the remaining 5 heats - so it could be as early as lunchtime Saturday!!

Some very good racing on a VERY dusty track. Ben Hopwood was outstanding for IOW and Lee Smethills and Dean Felton both gave him good support. Nick Simmons and Danny Warwick were both disappointing but for some reason neither of them seem to ever go well at Weymouth so that was not unexpected.

 

For Weymouth Adam McKinna again impressed and there was the usual number one performance from Byron Bekker who has been the silver lining in a very cloudy Weymouth season.

 

Although the meeting itself was entertaining enough it rather lost its way towards the end. The decision to take an interval after heat 12 with both drizzle and temperature falling was somewhat strange but to then halt proceedings so that the track could be watered before heat 15 amid more drizzle and falling temperature was bizarre, whatever the reason. It all meant that after a good meeting up to that point it took about 45 minutes to complete the last 3 heats amid drizzle, cold and mounting grumbles from the customers. And I do appreciate that some of that time was taken up by the need to attend to Tom Brown after his heat 15 fall.

 

Still, let not that detract from a good nights racing and another 3 points for the Wildcats.

Agree with Wanderer. A good meeting spoilt a bit by the amount of dust, and from the first corner of the first race. I rarely moan about track conditions but surely the bowser needs to slow down a bit. Either that or issue us spectacle wearers some tear offs upon entry.

Four pound of shale on me coat, but three valuable points in the bag.
