Dudley Heathens Vs. Scunthorpe Saints - Tuesday 27th July

Recommended Posts

DUDLEY Heathens are gunning for second place in the National League table when they face Scunthorpe at Wolverhampton on Tuesday (7.30).

Heathens, who are backed in massive numbers by fans from the old Cradley Heath era, are on a fine run of form and are back at Monmore after last week's win over the Isle of Wight.

Richard Franklin returns from a throat injury to make his first full appearance at reserve for the former Dudley Wood side.

Boss Will Pottinger said: "This is a big meeting for us and we need to win by more than six-points to claim all three league points and go second in the table which would be a great achievement.

"We're all looking forward to this in a big way, the boys are buzzing with confidence and so are the fans."

Heathens have already beaten the Saints this season to make progress in the Knockout Cup - and they're looking to complete the league double after winning in Lincolnshire earlier this season.

DUDLEY: Lee Smart, Micky Dyer, Tom Perry, Jake Andersen, Jon Armstrong, Ashley Morris, Richard Franklin.

SCUNTHORPE: Mark Burrows, Benji Compton R/R, Gary Beaton, Gary Irving, Scott Richardson, Steven Worrall, Ashley Birks.

Heat Results

Heat 01: Smart, Dyer, Burrows, Worrall 5-1

Line Up: Smart, Dyer, Burrows, RR - Worrall

Comments: Scunthorpe win toss and take 1 and 3. The first RR is the number 8.

Dyer last to 2nd on turn 1/2. Visitors spent 1st lap almost knocking each other off before settling but well off the Heathens pace. Smart by a mile and cruising

Heat 02: Worrall, Franklin, Morris, Birks 3-3 8-4

Line Up: Morris, Franklin, Worrall, Birks

Comments: Eventful.Shocking gating by the heathens. Both passed Birks. Morris challenging for the lead clipped back wheel of Worrall. Somehow stayed on but went to the back on lap 3. Recovered to come through again. Franklin closing all the time but left himself too much to do.

Heat 03: Anderson, Perry, Irving, Beaton 5-1 13-5

Line Up: Perry, Andersen, Beaton, Irving

Comments:Beaton jumps start, missed it but gets benefit of a restart.

Anderson untroubled. Perry took a lap on the outside to shake off Irving who continued to push without looking like making a move

Heat 04: Armstrong, Birks, Franklin, Richardson 4-2 17-7

Line Up: Armstrong, Franklin, Richardson, Birks

Heat 05: Perry, Burrows, Worrall, Anderson (x) 3-3 20-10

Line Up: Perry, Andersen, Burrows, RR - Worrall

Comments: Number 8 takes the RR again.

Andersen discluded for knocking off Burrows in the slowest accident you've ever seen in your life. Genuine lol as Burrows barely even hit the ground.

Rerun stopped as worrall becomes the 2nd visitor to jump the start, miss it and get another chance

2nd rerun - Brilliant race up front. Perry outside Burrows inside shoulder to shoulder for 3 laps. Burrows caught out by smart cut back by Perry turn 4 lap 3. He drifted out on turn 2 last lap to let Burrows through but Perry gave it a handful on last turn around the outside to win on the line

Heat 06: Smart, WORRALL, Dyer, Richardson 4-4 24-14

Line Up: Smart, Dyer, Richardson, WORRALL

Comments: Worrall taking a tactical ride

Smart untroubled again. Dyer good jump but terrible cock up off bends 1 and 2.Nearly fell and when he gathered it all up found himself about 40m back. Caught and passed Richardson lap 2. Caught Worrall but ran out of laps for a decisive move

Heat 07: Morris, Irving, Beaton, Armstrong (x) 3-3 27-17

Line Up: Armstrong, Morris, Beaton, Irving

Comments: Stopped. Armstrong fell under challenge by Irving and the former is discluded. Shame for Morris who was leading after a clever turn 1 and 2 lap1 to sneak from last to first while nobody was looking his way.

Rerun - Morris passed Irving lap 1 inside on back straight

Heat 09: Anderson, Perry, Richardson, S Worrall 5-1 37-19

Line Up: Perry, Andersen, Richardson, Worrall

Comments: Anderson untroubled this time. Perry shocking gate and aren't we glad of it for entertainment value. Perry passed the saints duo on the inside for a change on lap 1 and lap 3

Heat 10: Smart, Dyer, Beaton, Irving 5-1 42-20

Line Up: Smart, Dyer, Beaton, Irving

Comments: Smarty made to work for half a lap. Passed Irving back straight lap 1 on the outside. Clever move by Dyer to turn back on turn 4 lap 1 to pass Irving on the inside while he was distracted by Smart. Irving then lost power lap 2 to slip to the back before getting it going again.

Heat 11: Armstrong, BURROWS, Morris, Worrall 4-4 46-24

Line Up: Armstrong, Morris, BURROWS, RR - Worrall

Comments: Burrows tac - another RR for the number 8

Superb race between the front 3. Burrows leading but under severe pressure by both heathens. Armstrong getting around the outside and Morris getting a wheel up inside of both. Armstrong finally makes the outside run pay on lap 3. Morris makes the inside pay going into turn 3 last lap but cant quite park it on the kerb to cover the cut back which Burrows takes without a 2nd invitation. Centre green announcer Porky says he heard what Morris said to himself as he crossed the line. Cant repeat it but Ash wasnt too happy with himself lol.

INTERVAL

Heat 12: Worrall, Franklin, Perry, Beaton 3-3 49-27

Line Up: Perry, Franklin, Beaton, Worrall

Comments: Steady ride by Worrall under a bit of pressure from Franklin

Heat 13: Smart, Armstrong, Richardson, Burrows 5-1 54-28

Line Up: Smart, Armstrong, Burrows, Richardson

Comments: Smart barely out of 1st gear again. Armstrong took a lap to shake off Saints. As he rode outside Smartlooked back and saw him there. Then slowed right down to allow him to pass and team rode to the flag (updaters comment - thats a £65000 fine in F1 you know). Heathens by a mile in the end. Burrows ef but was well beaten by then anyway

Heat 14: Morris, anderson, Birks, Irving 5-1 59-29

Line Up: Andersen, Morris, Irving, Birks

Comments: Extremely hard race up front between Morris and Irving.Morris a bit naughtygoing into lap 2 as he squeezed Irving right against the home straight fence. Next lap around very tight going into turn 1 lap 3 - Irving fell. Possible slight contact but this lap was fair by the young heathen. Irving is discluded. After Irving went down Anderson had his own fall while 3rd and nobody near him. Red lights came on bfore anderson was back on the bike but race awarded as a home 5-1. Texter believes Heathens a touch lucky - on another day both heathens could have been given the boot.

Fence being repaired but Irving ok

Heat 15: Worrall, Armstrong, Perry, Birks 3-3 62-32

Line-up: Armstrong, Perry, S Worrall, Birks

Comments: Saints won toss and take 1 and 3.

Good ride again by Worrall up front. Under plenty of pressure from Armstrong but made no mistakes. Ridden well tonight, good on him. Perry headed for the city centre on turn 1 lap 1 and looked left for dead by the others. Carried huge speed down the back straight and passed Birks as if he'd packed up. Well behind the front 2 though

Another good crowd at Monmore tonight and the scoreline, did not reflect the nights racing, Steven Worrall rode well for his points, Buzz had two very good races in between two dissapointing rides, and all The Saints riders tried there hearts out, and saints fans can be proud of them. for the Heathens it was a good All round team performance from them, led by a largely untroubled Lee Smart, and there doesnt appear to be a weak link in the Team, however they may be vulnerable to a team of gaters, i am looking forward more and more to the Newport fixture..we OWE them..

Another great night to be a Heathens fan. The lads all chipped in throughout and contributed something of note to the meeting.

Smart - Made it look easy. Good to see him team ride in 13 rather than just clear off.

Dyer - Liked his move in 10 to turn up the inside as Irving on the inside while the Saint was watching Smart go around the outside.

Perry - Brilliant race against Burrows in his 2nd ride and got the win on the line and showed the increasing diversity in his ability to race by staying cool and calm to pick his way through traffic on the inside in his 3rd ride.

Anderson - 3 out of 4 aint bad. Shame about the disclusion but it was the right decision.

Armstrong - Shame he fell in one heat but apart from that he rode very well and came through from the back a couple of times. Heat 11 the pick as he just kept coming around the outside and showed the determination to make it pay in the end.

Morris - Looked very good. A couple of points went begging too because I think he was the quicker rider in heat 2 and missed out on the run to the line in heat 11. No complaints at all though. He was much more in the mix than we've seen a few times.

Franklin - Bottom scorer with 'only' paid 8 and no heat wins. Shocking!!:P A good return to action after a week off for Rich and as ever he showed good speed but has to do something about the truly appalling starts he makes at times. (and he knows it because he mentioned it after the meeting)

If pushed for an answer I would give Morris the MOTM. Good stuff from Ash on Tuesday.

Well done lads. That's us up to second in the table. Newport have away meetings to catch up compared to us and their record on the road is not as strong as ours currently (though obviously they could go out and win the ones they have to catch up on). So perhaps there is still a chance of finishing top this form can be maintained. Certainly, our home meeting against them could prove decisive.

For the visitors I obviously need to give credit to Worrall for a very good performance on the whole. He looks comfortable leading races and didn't make any mistakes when under severe pressure a couple of times. It must be noted that he didn't look so happy in traffic though when it was tight and messy between him Richardson and Perry in heat 9. Sort that part of his game out and he looks like one to keep an eye on. Burrows was right in the thick of the action and working hard. He certainly deserves a notable mention for his performance, and likewise Irving who gave it everything. Hard to believe the latter ended up with such a poor looking score chart. The rest were, in truth, largely either passed and never really in it and their scores are a fair reflection.
