Sunday Times Piece On British Gp

Recommended Posts

As there was no contact and Nicki leading I would have called it the same way which is hard on Davey who was just racing.

Nicki didn't take exception on Hans .... it was the other way as Nicki clearly went back to riding the rider instead of the race.

Either way, if they'd showed a bit of sense they could easily have taken advantage of making good starts to team ride Woffinden out of it and both gained an extra point. As it turned out, they decided to head for Cardiff Bay on turns 1-2 and left Woffinden acres of room to execute a sweet cutback. A place in the semi-finals could have hinged on that, as Nicki Pedersen just scraped in. Time and again you'll see the Poles looking out for each other. I recall one time Gollob struggling for the semi-finals and just making it after racing Hampel in the last qualifying heat.

Nice to see a good write up in the Sunday Times today about last night's superb British GP...it has raised a question though...it described the crowd as a disappointing 32,000 yet the BSPA website says it was a record crowd of 44,150.

Excellent report in the Telegraph who report 44,150 attendees. They also said this:

Hmm, well I don't know what the crowd was but I do know that IMHO the Telegraph is the best paper for sport in the UK and long has been so I'd go with them.

The Times' take on things , one can define only in two ways. One that they got their facts badly wrong - which is difficult to explain as one presumes that attendances are facts in the public domain; or that they have deliberately written this incorrect, negative comment. Whuch is worrying.

Oh, for a situation when our sport got fair treatment from the national media..

But let's be positive, big up for the Telegraph - an excellent newspaper... :approve:

I didnt think that there were as many people there as in previous years but that feeling is based on how I found Cardiff before the meeting, rather than the stadium as I couldnt see many sections from my seat. It just didnt seem as busy on the streets or in the pub.

Although not there in person I always take an interest in the attendance. The main straight top tBSI would have a lot of difficult explaining to do when they publish official figures of 44,150.

Whilst not as suspiciously round as some attendances quoted in the past, it does still seem coincidentally exact.

This said, I imagine published attendances are meaningless for tax purposes because there are different priced tickets and concessionary prices as well.

Before and after the event i always create a 'Google News' Favourite on my Desk Top. Whilst more reports will gradually filter through over the coming days, there is a remarkable downturn in the number of results returned.

Anyway, of those there now, the Telegraph reports a 'record' crowd of 41,150 and an Australian site quotes 41,000.

Best so far is the Herald Sun in Australia which quotes an attendance of MORE than 44,000!

A couple of days later and definitely a massive decrease in media reports from this year's Google News search on the event. A lot of them do include the exact phrase 'record crowd of 41,150'.

This was addded to results from 44 minutes ago in the Manchester Evening News (didn't clock the black arm band myself)

Incidentally the Manchester Evening News refers to a record crowd of 44,150

when did he not do this?!

It definitely increases the less his bikes are on form though

His bikes are down on power this season no doubt ... which is allowing his true talent to come to the fore!!! ;)

IMO definitely bigger crowd this year. 1st/2nd bend nearly full - usually is but wasn't last year. 3rd/4th bend much fuller with seats occupied to the top. Main straight - usual sparse attendance. Back straight very busy (though I only got that impression from TV coverage as I was there myself)

I thought it was down by a few thousand. My estimate 40,000 tops.

Having been there when the place is full for an FA Cup Final and The playoffs there is no way there was anywhere near 40000 there. I reckon the Times is bang on with 32000.

Apart from Gollob the "passing" was due to rider errors and always with one wheel over the white line. Pretty poor and not sure what Rickardsson, Adams and Ermolenko were getting so excited about. If the crowds continue to shrink at their current rates we'll be back at Brandon or Peterborough.
