tomcat
Reading through the various threads on here, about former riders and what they're doing now, does anyone know what former Ipswich Witch and Birminghal Brummie Alan Sage is up to these days? Or where he even is? Just wondering about a lot of former Ipswich riders in truth. I know Shrimp Davey is well and doing ok, having seen and spoken with him over the years. Likewise Ted Howgego, Mike Lanham and Mick Hines. Sad to read about Sandor Levai, another of my first Ipswich Hero's too. Any news on Sagey would be greatly appreciated. Parsloes 1928 nearly
Any news on Sagey would be greatly appreciated. Could be wrong but I think I remember George Barclay telling me a year or so back that Sagey had just fitted a boiler for him, so assume he's working as a plumber/gas fitter..? Fairly sure he's still in the Kent area...
cityrebel
as a kid i saw alan sage ride plenty of times for west ham at custom house. in later years he was a loyal crayford team man before ending his career at arena essex. a couple of years ago someone told me he was having a go at stock car racing. Parsloes 1928 nearly
One of my all-time favourite riders. And holder of the greatest set of appearance records ever surely... From making his debut (in the top division) with West Ham, Sagey was ever-present in Division One with the Hammers and then the Witches for four consecutive seasons: then, as you say, when he moved to Crayford he carried on the record through 1975 - 1978 completing an incredible 327 consecutive appearances in official fixtures before breaking his leg in July 1979. Even then, when he returned to the saddle mid-season in 1980, he never missed another match for Crayford; and was ever-present again for Arena Essex in ’84 and ’85 and then for Canterbury in his final season of ’86. So, in 16 seasons from 1971 to 1986 Alan was to be ever-present in 14 of them: an incredible record!
cityrebel
they say that records are made to be broken. you would have to wait a long time for someone to beat alan sage's superb feat of not missing meetings.
WembleyLion
My best memory of Alan Sage was seeing him involved in an unexpected heat 13 5-1 for Ipswich at Hackney in 1973 which got the Witches a draw.
tomcat
A Huge Thanks to everyone.... It's good to know that Sagey is still about and seemingly doing well. I hadn't realised about the appearance side of things. Come to think of it, I cant actually remember him missing any Ipswich meetings, he always seemed to be there, come hell or high water. One of speedways true unsung hero's I would say.

They were both excellent to watch and showed they still had great balance!!!!

tomcat
More clubs than Jacob's Biscuits! http://wwosbackup.proboards.com/index.cgi?...amp;thread=2488 Along with a lot of other riders through the years.... and your point is? At the end of the day, Sagey was a solid team man and whilst not a World beater, he was reliable and steady.

frigbo
Along with a lot of other riders through the years.... and your point is? I wasn't necessarily making one, apart from providing people info on Sage's career. Bit touchy I reckon!! Very nice they are too, Norman!
