Lionel Van Praag

I was just taking out some rubbish to pop in the bin not ten minutes ago, wearing my 4 Aussie World Champs shirt; young - 30ish - feller with his toddler walking past the gate, so I said 'G'day" and he replied "That bloke on your T-shirt, that's my Grandad!"

Turns out he's Lionel van Praag's grandson! That's the man who won the inaugural World Speedway Championship at Wembley on 10th September 1936 - he remembers meeting all the ol' Aussie heroes as a kid, - we've just finished yacking as his lad was a bit tired; he was born on Lionel's birthday. Anyhow, he's down the street at No 26 so I'll hafta drop round and yarn on, see if he's got anything I can post - small world, eh?

Hi bfd-can you ask your friend whether his grandad ever mentioned the 1936 WF and whether he had any discussions re outcome with Eric Langton prior to racing him. Wish i had a neighbour like that-buy him a beer from me!!!!!!!!!

What an interesting picture of the meanderings of the mind. Would you like the contact number of my psychologist friend?
