AS we start the new Speedway Season it is opportune to announce the new team of GB Under 21 Coaches.

Once again Graham Reeve will co-ordinate the team which now consists of Graham Jones, in his 3rd year as a Coach for the British Youth Riders and we will be joined by Phil Morris, who was forced into retirement during last Season and Neil Vatcher, Team Manager for the Bournemouth Bucaneers in 2009 and formerly a mechanic to Craig Boyce and Alun Rossiter.

Both Phil and Neil bring extensive speedway knowledge to the Team and the Coaching Team will be involved in all Under 21 Activities, including the Under 18 Championship and the very successful Under 15 British Championships.

The duties of managing the Riders, especially when on international duty will continue to be shared by all the Coaches, a system that has worked well since the inception of an Under 21 GB Coaching Team for the 2008 Season.

The 2010 Under 21 Championship, being defended by Lewis Bridger gets underway in April with 3 Qualifying Rounds (Plymouth – 9th April, Weymouth – 10th April & Mildenhall – 11th April) from where the top 3 at each meeting will go onto the British Final at Lakeside (16th April) to join the 7 Seeded Riders, Josh Auty, Lewis Bridger, Joe Haines, Jerran Hart, Simon Lambert, Robert Mear & Tai Woffinden).

This season’s World Championship trail is longer than usual as there are three Finals, instead of the traditional 1 day Final, hence the early date for the British Final as International Qualifying Rounds take place in May; Lendava, Slovenia (8th May) and Gdansk, Poland & Gorican, Croatia (15th May). The qualifiers from these rounds then compete in Semi Finals; Landshut, Germany & Krsko, Slovenia (June 26th) in order to qualify for the Final Series (Gdansk – 17th July, Daugavpils – 14th August & Pardubice – 2nd October).

The British Under 15 Series, once again sponsored by The Friends of Speedway will be held over 6 Rounds, starting at Newport on 22nd May and continuing onto Weymouth (19th June), Northside Training Track (17th July), Island (12th August), Buxton (11th September) and the final round will be at Plymouth on 18th September.

Additionally Practice Sessions under the tuition of International Riders will be held, the first of which is planned for Buxton on Tuesday 13th April, to which all Riders who were under 15 at the start of 2010 are welcome to attend (please register your interest with the SCB office, so that we know how many to cater for) as incorporated into the Under 15 Championship Meetings it is planned to hold support races for young riders on 125cc motorcycles.

So it looks like they're going for a 12-rider format and some of the rounds don't even have full fields of 12 riders! This is a proper championship so surely it should use the proper 16-man, 20-heat formula as it has done in the past? If there aren't enough riders, surely they should just have two 16-rider semi-finals?

Not sure if that's the case or that there are slots to fill still...

One extremely notable absentee is Marc Owen... Surely Marc MUST be included in one of the rounds...: hopefully the Mildenhall one...

Been much confusion over Mildenhall start times but I'm reliably informed (by our mutual good friend the Kirkmeister) that the GB U21s at West Row has a 6pm start time...

Oi! you cheeky bu**er

All I said was what I saw on the Official website! Strangely it is no longer there?? So 5pm or 6pm I have no idea, maybe someone from the club could clear this up?

I checked with the management yesterday mate because I was also confused and they confirmed its now 5pm for all meetings this season including the Under 21 round.

Thats what the staff have been told, and the webmaster was asked to change the official site, which we did, but sure Dub will confirm.

Mildenhall have confirmed on the their official forum that ALL meetings including the British Under 21 round and the NL Fours start at 5pm this season with the parade at 4.45pm

Cheers

And 12-rider line-ups still. The heat format is not fair for all in such meetings, something that's particularly important with only three qualifiers.

Anyone no why the rider line ups have been amended 3 times, or why riders have been swaped round,? is it a drawn ballot or do riders just pick the round they wish to ride in ? two semis with 16 rider line ups sounds like sense to me ! . Also i think with holding them so early in the season maybe they should have been all held at stadiums with covered stands like mildenhall.

There appears to be an amended list on the BSPA site posted today but the Mildenhall field hasn't changed. FIVE KLYS in that field of 12, btw...

The bigger question to me (with a personal interest in terms of getting the race card correct..) is: what's this 12 rider format all about and what is it..!!!

Also have asked before but why on earth isn't Marc Owen named in any of the semis...? There are a number of riders with far less experience...

12 rider formats I've seen, either some riders don't meet each other or some riders face each other twice.

That's right. The GB Under 15s the other year at Buxton had this sort of format. And most infamously of all was that shocking format for the Bronze Helmet in '08 at Weymouth...

The more one thinks about this and looks at the line-ups the clearer it becomes that there should surely have been just two semis - which then could've been proper 16 rider 20 heat meetings...

While I agree the 12 rider format isn't ideal, four riders are getting their chance to compete in the competition who wouldn't if there were two semi finals. That in my eyes is a positive for this format.

I am surprised there isn't a round further North (somewhere like Buxton) for the more Northern based riders. A round at Plymouth or Weymouth, Mildenhall and then Buxton would seem fairer but I guess the rounds have to be held at the tracks who offer their services?

I'm away for the weekend but hopefully I can get back in time to make it over to Mildenhall, especially with five KL Young Stars in the lineup

As an aside, does anyone have anymore info on Luke Chessell? Any relation to the former Swindon rider Gary Chessell? Not a name I have seen mentioned before.

He's his son. He was just starting out at Scunthorpe the December before last as he was riding the mini-track the same day as SB and me. He has since ridden for Buxton at IoW.
