Batchelor To Defend South Australian Solo Championship At Gillman On Sunday

Gillman Media posted Wednesday January 13, 2010.

This Sunday (17 January) night’s CBS Bins / Tucker Time For Pets South Australian Solo Championship has attracted a top class field, headed by defending champion Troy Batchelor who will be trying for a third consecutive win.

Batchelor, who is the only Queensland rider to have won the SA Title, was outstanding at our last meeting but will once again face tough opposition with six other riders from this year’s Australian Championship also competing — Cameron Woodward, Cory Gathercole, Tyron Proctor (who have won the last five Victorian Championships between them), Justin Sedgmen, Josh Auty and Robert Ksiezak — and all will fancy their chances of making the final, and if they can do that anything can happen from there.

Woodward had a disappointing meeting here a fortnight ago but returned to form last weekend at Newcastle where he finished second to Chris Holder in the final round of the Australian Championship, and he normally rides well at this track, so he may be Batchelor’s biggest threat, but fellow Victorians Gathercole, Proctor and Sedgmen all finished above Woodward in the series’ points, while Englishman Josh Auty not only impressed at our last meeting but also earlier in the season when he won the Jack Young Cup.

Local rider Robert Ksiezak finished near the bottom of the Australian Championship points but that is not a true indication of how well he rode as he was always in the mix, at the Gillman round in particular.

The winner is almost certain to come rom that group of seven riders, but most of the other riders are more than capable of causing some upsets and maybe even qualifying for the semi-final or the final.

Jake Anderson and Damien Koppe look better each time they ride here, and NSW teenagers Todd Kurtz and Taylor Poole were impressive last season, while Dakota North is a former Australian Under 16 Champion.

The full line-up is:

Troy Batchelor (Qld) – current South Australian Champion

Cory Gathercole (Vic) – former Victorian & Western Australian Champion

Ty Proctor (Vic) – current Victorian Champion

Cameron Woodward (Vic) – 3 times Victorian Champion

Robert Ksiezak (SA), Justin Sedgmen (Vic), Josh Auty (Eng), Damien Koppe (Qld), Jake Anderson (Vic), Dakota North (Vic), Ben Turner (SA), Todd Kurtz (NSW), Taylor Poole (NSW), Robert Branford (SA), Arlo Bugeja (SA) and Ryan Sedgmen (Vic), with Ben Hatcliffe (SA) as reserve.

Format:

16 riders x 20 heats, Semi-Final & Final

4th to 7th highest scorers to the semi-final; winner of the semi-final and highest three scorers to the final

Glenn and Nathan O'Brien Return to Racing

The Sidecar support events will also be a feature event in their own right, with four-times Australian Champions Glenn and Nathan O'Brien making a return to speedway after 5 years in retirement.

Glenn and Nathan dominated Sidecar racing in the early 2000s, winning the Australian Championship in 2000, 01 and 02, before adding the finishing touches to illustrious careers by winning a fourth Title at Bibra Lake in Western Australia in February 2004, in what was their final meeting before retiring.

The fourth win made them the most successful combination in the Championship’s history, but they will not have an easy run on Sunday night, facing five-times Australian Champion Darrin Treloar (passenger Justin Plaisted), and current Australian Champions Mark Mitchell/Tom Golding.

That's a combined total of ten national crown winners we could be seeing in the Sidecar final!

Sidecar line-up:

Darrin Treloar (NSW)/Justin Plaisted, Glenn O'Brien/Nathan O'Brien (WA), Mark Mitchell/Tom Golding (SA), Byren Gates/Michael O'Loughlin (Vic), Ron Parker/Matt Morgan (SA), Trent Headland/Jesse Headland (SA), Daniel Puddy/Chad Herbert (SA), Brenten Dwyer/Aaron Hartwig (SA), Tim Bichard/Derick Thomas (SA), Shane Evans/Alan Gale (SA), Keith Bichard/Adam Pfitzner (SA).

Format

12 heats, Semi-Final & Final

4th to 7th highest scorers to the semi-final; winner of the semi-final and highest three scorers to the final

Junior Speedway

350cc Junior Solos (4 events)

Robert Medson, Arthur Sissis, Dylan Blain (Qld), Robert Gottard (Qld)

125cc Junior Solos (6 events)

Arthur Sissis, Jake Mitchell, Dakota Ballantyne, Ryan Hatcliffe, Brady Kurtz (NSW), Robert Gottardi (Qld)

125cc Junior Solo Novices (practice rides)

Jack Norman, William Coombes

Interesting interpritation that one, was that what the ref explained it as.

Lifted slightly but was half a bike length ahead and going in a straight line.

Still the important thing is that Ben Turner was ok, a bit battered but nothing broken.

A nicer guy in the sport you wont meet.

Cheers Chopper

Sidecars;

Team Gob Nob made what only could be described as a sucssesful return to racing on the AP COX SIDECAR.

Winning 3 out of 4 heats and crossing the line first in the other but got put out for crossing the ploe line .

The heat with GOB NOB Treloar and Mitchell was a ripper and they finished in that order.

Final ;and Treloar was off first Gob Nobs missed the gate and whilst trying hard to make up ground spun on to the infeild and they both harmlessly fell to the ground

Treloar Mitchell Gates

The battle between Treloar and Mitchell was one to watch with them both swapping positions several times !

Looks like we have another contender for the Aussie Title!

Havent got all the results as I was busy trying to find a mystery problem with the Parker sidecar.

After a engine freshen up and countless hours spent on the bike the Flat ness is still in the motor so after heat 3 we had had enough and packed up and headed for "Hasbeen hill" to watch the final heats of the Solos.

Was pleased that "The Prince" finally found a racesuit he could get into prior to the start of the meeting! From memory (it's been a long drive back to Melbourne today!) that suit was predominately purple in colour so is Ronnie now to be known as Prince the Purple People Eater?
