Ozchamps 2010,

Recommended Posts

Its that wonderful time of the year again; time to pack up the socks & jocks, polish the knuckle-protectors and head south for the summer.

First stop is Mildura on the 30th for the Qualifier:

Jake Anderson, Mitchell Davey, Alex Davies, Josh Grajczonek, Jay Herne, James Holder, Mark Jones, Robert Ksiezak, Todd Kurtz, Dakota North, Taylor Poole, Kozza Smith, Ryan Sedgmen, Justin Sedgmen, Richard Sweetman, Ricky Wallace (reserve), Arlo Bugeja (reserve). Should be some bold showings from the local lads and hopefully Taylor Poole has recovered from his latest mishap and remembers that the fence at Mildura does bite! Just heard that Josh Auty has been confirmed for this one; not sure who's out yet but doubtless all will be revealed.

Top six finishers will then trek down to Port for Jan 2nd and the first round proper, joining the likes of Troy Batchelor, Jason Doyle, Cory Gathercole, Chris Holder, Mark Lemon, Sam Masters, Tyron Proctor, Rory Schlein, Darcy Ward and Cameron Woodward in the three round battle to find this season's top Aussie. I've got a feeling it'll be Troy Batchelor's year, I think he really wants this one, but any one of half-a-dozen riders are in with a shot.

Really looking forward to catching up with the rest of the Oz Speedway Fraternity, both spectators and riders, plus a few blow-ins including 40-odd Pomgolians from TravelPlus. This is a journey that will take me some 12,000km in a zig-zagging round trip around the south-eastern states, just for four meetings - I must be crazy!! :approve:

If any one hasn't had the misfortune of meeting me yet I'm quite sociable; just cross my palm with alcohol and I'll tell you your good fortune!

Bryn, its your shout!!

And for those not living in Australia....me and Lunchy are teaming up again on the 30th for the quali.

Boy am I looking forward to hearing his sexy tones again :D

Did I mention that I'm Lunchy's voice double?

I'll be trying to ensure he stays sober enough to update (by pinching his beer!! )

Hot off the Gossip line (Thanxx and a tip of the hat to the Lunchmeister!! :approve: ) comes the news that Robert Branford has joined the already-announced Josh Auty as a late inclusion, replacing Kozza Smith who's still injured and Todd Kurtz, who did his knee at Gosford recently. Richard Sweetman is also out, maybe due to battle fatigue; Ricky Wallace takes his spot.

Great news for young Robert, I've heard he's improved no end so far this year so fingers crossed he goes well.

Also, big improvements at Olympic Park this year with the Pits moving to behind the Start/Finish line, opening up turns 3 and 4 for spectator areas, with maybe another bar? Wouldn't that be nice!! Reports too that the track has been resurfaced and is less sandy than in the past. Looks like I'll be leaving me bucket & spade at home.

Alas 'Haza' I understand the meetings are not being covered live by Radio Freemantle so log into 'live updates' site. Sue will be up at the crack of dawn and Sir Lunchalot will be texting results through - providing I and Gavin Elmes successfully navigate him from Melbourne to Mildura in the car - or has he ordered a limousine?:wink:

Hehe BFD...prove it!

Yep, me and Lunchy will be providing updates for the qualifier and the first two rounds. Unfortunately, Lunchy is unable to text the final round as he is announcing so if anyone fancies sending me texts (yeah I know it is expensive from Aus to GB) for the final round, then please let me know.

Many thanks.

Sue, regarding the expense of texts from OZ, I was just wondering if there is anyone over there that could use www.skype.com to relay results to you as video calls are free worldwide. Tune in to the website and see how it works.

Thanks in advance for your live update efforts.

Skype is excellent. Its one of the ways Lynette Schlein and I keep the speedway gossip flowing even though we are thousands of miles apart.

I dont have a posh phone hence the question - can you skype from a mobile?

As for Holders competition I would love to say Rory Schlein. And under normal circumstances I would be shouting that aloud BUT - Roo has been very poorly in recent months (an after affect of his Ipswich 16 lapper injury) so unless he gets some strength from some good aussie steaks I am just praying he makes it through with a ticket for GP qualifiers.

He wont have time for jet lag either as he has only just arrived home in Australia in the the last 24hours.

Looking forward to following this and I too am sad that Freemantle arent covering - so much passion on the radio, I will miss that! :(

That phone sex ain't what its cracked up to be - I tried it once; first she called me a cradle-snatcher and then I kept falling off the handset!!

I've thought of various ways around it...for example, someone at the meeting in Aus texting to someone else in Aus who can then send it through to me via MSN, or someone with MSN on their phone, MSNing direct from the meeting to me (if it can work like that, we do a few meetings over here with that system).

I don't use Skype at all...I prefer using audio via MSN with a headset (I use that every night), same sort of thing as Skype but a lot less hassle.

More exciting news from your Man in Mildura - Jay Herne, Taylor Poole and Michael Penfold out, replaced by Brock Gates, Arlo Bugeja, and Joe Haines. Who's next I wonder? Lucky I didn't bring the Kevlars down, eh?

Meanwhile I made it to town and staggered into the Gateway Tavern, where a coupla well-placed punts ensured I had a cheap arvo & feed.

Alas I'm now a wee bit shickered and might have to forego the pre-event drinks at the Club tonight, unless I resort to illicit substances. I'l just grab a few zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzs. :approve:

PS Forecast is for a balmy 38C tomorrow - I'm betting we'll hafta pick Bryn up with a sponge.

I was happy to see Kozza's name included in the qualifier line up...only to then be disappointed further down the page reading that second message  Does anyone from down under know how he's getting on i.e recovering from that ankle injury?

Do you not remember the conversation at BV? :P Yes! I can Skype from my phone and it's probably a pretty average phone by todays standards. In fact, 3 make a big thing about having free Skype these days, link here for UK peeps.

I can also use msn on my phone and even log in direct to live updates (remember, I even updated Nicks site from the track about the weather on his testimonial day). It's getting tot he point that there won't need to be an updater soon, it can be done straight from the track.

I don't know where they are from a cost/tariff perspective in Aus ATM but it's all very easily (and freely, at worst, cheaply) doable in this country.

Yep SCB, it is something we have seen more of over the last season or so....either direct from the track on an internet enabled mobile or with the use of MSN on a mobile to save the cost of texts.

I could do it on my phone but the coding does make it a slightly longer job and with having the boys at the track, it is sometimes all I can do to actually send a text!

But the flexibility is there, the technology is there and we are utilising it as much as we possibly can...saves me a few headaches too!

12.50am Aussie time, am at Sir Lunchalot's castle and just about to hit the sack (Sir Lunchalot has done so already!) after flying in to Melbourne from Sydney earlier and then adjourning to Kelly's (summat to do with Ned Kelly in the past!) for a feed and a couple of pints then back to here for 'special' coffees. Off to airport to pick up our mate Gavin at crack of dawn and then heading up to Mildura for tonight's qualifier. Good luck to all riders - but especially Josh & Joe eh?
