Only just seen this thread. I regularly visit the parkland that was once the Rangers home, there is one remaining wooden step and a weird plaque near the bridge that leads to the new football ground, apart from that there is nothing(sadly) to even hint at it's past.

Ilderton Road, formerly Canterbury Road had three pubs, the Cliftonville, the Barnaby both now flats and the Canterbury which whilst still there is now an African bar, other local pubs such as the Crown and Anchor, Albany, Royal Archer, Hatcham,Railway, Fox and Hounds, Prince of Windsor, Rose of Kent, Bramcote and Golden Lion have all closed for good. Nearest local is now the Five Bells, which whilst being ok, doesn't have the atmosphere of the others.

I have started a New Cross supporters page on Facebook, where i am currently the only member ! My family and friends all seem to get a glazed look about them when i mention the mighty Rangers, even more sad as many of them support the local football team.

Please keep me informed of any pilgrimage.

Like you I'm trying to get more about this and how well it might get local publicity and any other sort of support because it is a very long time since speedway was there. I just wonder how many people in the area even know it took place there and where are the old local fans who are needed for such pilgrimage. Good luck though to the suggestion.

How far ahead are arrangements for the NX supporters gathering. I hope it's not just going to be a pub crawl. The Rangers were one of the sport's greatest teams. I only saw them in the Johnnie Hoskins and Wally Mawdsley period but you could sense the heritage from the previous promotion. I went to a Norwich reunion event a few years ago and that was great and NX needs someting simlar.

And what's wrong with a pub crawl..?!

Nothing wrong at all, cheers, matey! But I was just hoping it might be something like the day they have at Norwch with displays, former riders, etc coming along and hopefully to look at some old speedway bikes and wallow in nostalgia!

The yearly Norwich get together is organised under the aegis of the WSRA and is a sit down dinner. A lot of ex-riders attend, though there isn't much in the way of memorabilia or bikes around.

I think Jim's idea really was just for a few of us to get together. I can't see anyone really being willing to undertake organising an event of the scale of the Norwich do.

Just to let everyone know I have now taken receipt of copies of "Tom Farndon The Greatest Speedway Rider of Them All".

It is being officially launched at the Celebration of Speedway on 21 February, but if anyone is desperate to have one now please contact me.

I'm off to have a good read now!

And is it just me but isn't NEXT November one heck of a long time for the Lewisham Local History bods to plan ahead their talks...?!

Just thought I'd let you know, Parsloes, old chap, that I have now been booked for 10 talks in 2011. :)

Programme secretaries of many societies are now starting to book speakers for 2012.

Come on DK/Norbold. What happened to the meeting we were going to have in a local pub and a look around where the track was. Some of us maybe running out of time you know. <img src="http://www.speedway-forum.co.uk/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> A nice pub lunch and a walk around where the track was. It would be nice if it was about the time John Chaplin and Norman Jacob's book came out on Tom Farndon - that would be a nice touch. I might get the old bugger JC there in person with a bit of luck.

Plus, if he could find the right number bus out of Streatham 'Speedyguy' if he has a night off from lamp posts and get the 'SOUTH LONDON PRESS' involved with a review.. I would be happy to mention it on my New Cross website and create a page for it on Facebook. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_smile_approve.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":approve:" border="0" alt="icon_smile_approve.gif" />

(Can you find your way south of the river Derek?)

I'll do it if needs be but I will need some recognizance from DK perhaps regarding pubs etc. Over to you....

And I thought this was supposed to be another site poster's idea? Not according to this.

No, I'm afraid nothing has reached the dizzy heights of my earlier books in the days when there weren't too many speedway books around.

My first speedway book, "Speedway in East Anglia", is by far my biggest seller, followed by "Speedway in London", which reached no. 3 in the Sunday Times Sports Book charts. "Speedway's Classic Meetings", which I wrote with Chris Broadbent (falcace), continues to sell most copies on a continuing ongoing basis.

So no "starving artist" sale on the horizon then Norbold! LOL!

No chance, Tom. Just ask falcace how much money we make every year out of our book. This year it was almost enough for a cup of tea each. :P

Another 10 years worth of royalties and I'll treat you to a Starbucks Norman :)
