Talking of which...a preview of the cover can be seen Here

Looks good to me! Certainly well worth £14.99 of anyone's money! :)

You never miss the opportunity of a free plug do you? Next you'll be telling us all that the timeless "Speedway's Classic Meetings" is still available and would make an ideal christmas present.

You're shameless Norman. Utterly shameless.

Yes, the exact Speedway's Classic Meetings I was talking about. That's Speedway's Classic Meetings, for anyone who missed it the first time. :)

Good idea, Jim.

By the way, I am giving a talk on the History of New Cross Speedway to the Lewisham Local History Society on 26th November next year. Anyone in the area welcome...

On reflection Norman, maybe the whole thing should be arranged around this. The trip and walk around the where the track was, would be tied in nicely with your talk on New Cross Speedway in Lewisham, it makes sense for those that wish to attend both, and I know I would like to. Sorry about that - I was simply thinking about the book launch which no doubt will be well covered anyway. At least it will make a day of it and pubs and beer to me at least are not so important, rather than just getting the atmosphere hopefully and to a little extent of what the sport was all about initially, to us fans of New Cross.

Problem is; will the Lewisham local History Society be able to cope with all us New Cross fans turning up...? :)

Only just seen this thread. I regularly visit the parkland that was once the Rangers home, there is one remaining wooden step and a weird plaque near the bridge that leads to the new football ground, apart from that there is nothing(sadly) to even hint at it's past.

Ilderton Road, formerly Canterbury Road had three pubs, the Cliftonville, the Barnaby both now flats and the Canterbury which whilst still there is now an African bar, other local pubs such as the Crown and Anchor, Albany, Royal Archer, Hatcham,Railway, Fox and Hounds, Prince of Windsor, Rose of Kent, Bramcote and Golden Lion have all closed for good. Nearest local is now the Five Bells, which whilst being ok, doesn't have the atmosphere of the others.

I have started a New Cross supporters page on Facebook, where i am currently the only member ! My family and friends all seem to get a glazed look about them when i mention the mighty Rangers, even more sad as many of them support the local football team.

Please keep me informed of any pilgrimage.

Norbold........just curious here.....did you ever go to those NX supporters clubs meetings / get togethers during the '60's???

No. I was very young and lived some distance from New Cross.

I'll be there as soon as I've finished looking at the BSF!

P.S. You now have three members. Jim beat me to it!

Yes, thank you both. Hope to see you both in my favourite part of Britain someday.

If anyone ever fancies a tour, give me a shout.

That is a pity, because as late as i guess the early 90s there were still some of the terracing and some of the stadium still to be seen. But once the Lions moved up the road i never ventured over there again because i always used South Bermondsey rather than the bus down the Old Kent Rd

I don't know whether they could cope with dozens of New Cross supporters turning up...well, maybe 4 or 5 anyway. They meet at the Methodist Church Hall, Albion Way, Lewisham. Anyone know how big that is?

The other alternative, of course, would be to meet on 11 September to celebrate Tom Farndon's 100th birthday. As luck would have it it is a Saturday.

I know Albion Way, it's just behind the town centre market, not familiar with the church though. Be careful where you park the traffic wardens are brutal.

As for September 11th, you might be wise to wait until early June to find out next seasons football fixtures before making any plans.

  • 3 weeks later...

Remember the Crown and Anchor as it was a haunt for Millwall's notorious football hoolies.

The old man used to take me to New X dogs in the 60s after the Rangers demise. We always walked to the speedway, dogs and football from Nunhead about 30 minutes away. Mainly watched Arsenal, Charlton, Dulwich Hamlet, and Corinthian Casuals...never a fan of the Lions. Surrey at the Oval in the summer, with visits to Wimbledon, Ackney, and West Am for the speedway fix before emigrating to Swindon in the west country in 68.

Drove down Ilderton Road last year to do a delivery to DHL right by the New Den. Big changes in the area. Too busy and noisy for me now.

And is it just me but isn't NEXT November one heck of a long time for the Lewisham Local History bods to plan ahead their talks...?!

Out of interest, Parsloes, I've just got my first booking for a talk in 2011.

Thanx mate-the demise of the English pub brings it home to me that England as I recall it has changed.Speaking tho' of pubs I associate with speedway, is the "Four Counties"-between Brum and Nottingham still there-?????may have been near Tamworth or the town they had the car auctions(the name of which I forgot). Used to stop there and have a pint with buddies on the way back from CH. to Nottm.

Measham was the car-auction town, and The Four Counties pub is at No Mans Heath
