Who Can Be World Champion 2010 ?

Recommended Posts

Although I dont go in for this prediction lark that much, if Emil can curb

his temper a bit, he could just do it. I say curb his temper a bit, as he

does fly off the handle a bit at times and for the daftest things.

His pit crew doesn't do a lot to help, from what I have seen, with their

windups of other riders, but if Emil was to channel that fiery side

in the right direction, I can see him lifting the crown in 2010.

I also fancy Tomasz Gollob to be there or there abouts this season too.

Shame to hear about Crumpys injury problems still. It was a nasty

one to suffer and I seriously hope he can get fit in time for the new

season ahead.

Which injury is that? The one sustained before last two GP-s?

It is indeed. Apparently Jason is missing a chunk of his bicep, which means

he doesn't have the strength to hold onto a bike whilst racing.

I know some people will probably be anti Crump, but I really hope that he

can get this sorted and continue his career.

I've gone from hating the guy to taking a shine to him as a racer over the

past few years, as he has matured into a really great racer and always

gives it 100%.

I think Hancock and Holder will probably be at decent odds to win a GP this season.

Even Zorro each way wouldn't be a waste because he is a super gater and can beat any one on his day on the right track.

How fit is Andreas Jonsson? I'm going through the box set og GP 2009 and he was certainly injured badly last year. He showed he has the talent and has been at the top for a while and if he's fit I wouldn't bet against him doing well. He would be one of my outside bets. If Crump is not fit then I reckon the old blokes might be good for one last try: Gollob, Hancock and not so old Pedesen. Sayfudinov might suffer from second season blues - everybody knows you and is ready for you and they'll not be giving you a fraction of an inch after a first season that saw him make as many enemies as friends. Still, he is definitely a great talent but being World Champion takes just a bit more than that. The head has to be right; you have to cope with bad meetings and still score points; you need to win the critical races and not buckle under pressure; you need to make your own luck. That's quite a lot for a young bloke. I'd back him for 2011.

How fit is Andreas Jonsson?

I don't know how fit he is now but one thing for certain - he bruises himself a few times a year and 2 - 3 times is usually quite badly. That's why he misses top 3 in seasons like 2009. If he calms down a bit more and stay out of these crashes, he will be able to take on top 3. Sometimes I think AJ is a bit too nervous and makes some rapid decisions which often result in no good. Previously I thought it could have been due to his age but now he is turning 30 and it is that time when things like that should no longer happen.

As for the other candidates...

I don't see Gollob as a champ but I see him battling for top 3 for sure. Not even because of 3 GP-s in Poland (last year he didn't win any of 2 GP-s in Poland and was out of final on his home track in Bydgoszczy) but because he seems to have stabilized. He had sort of a crisis in 2002 - 2005 when many (including myself) tipped him to fall out of GP series. It looks like he is over it now.

Hancock will certainly have a few things to say. He does every year. He may win one of the medals as well. I don't think he would take on No 1 though.

From my point of view it will be Nicki, Jason or Emil who will battle for No 1 in 2010.

Totally agree - but I sill think he would be worth an outside punt! Either the bumps on the head (metaphorical) will knock some speedway sense into him or he'll miss out again. I remember Jason Crump making bad decisions and then he sorted himself out and has now won the chamionship three times. Progress isn't always at a constant predictable rate and a late developer might come through this season. Wouldn't bet against Nicki or Jason but Emil is just too young. I don't think he can possibly have learnt enough from that first season. He looked outstsanding at times but pretty ordinary at others. In fact he looked exactly what he is - a great, very young talent whose time will come in a couple of years.

I still think Crumpie is a step ahead of the others, but it will be a lot closer this year with several riders capable of winning GPs (and taking points off each other).

Crumpie (just), from Nikki, Emil, Lindgren and Gollob
