Parsloes 1928 nearly
Very poignant watching those clips. How could such a great venue have been lost to the sport? No doubt someone made a pretty penny from selling the stadium down the river! Yep - and guess who..? The same folk who did for London's other truly great stadium, the White City... The GRA... star ghost
I bet they will be mentioned with Wimbledon next All of Londons great tracks went because people stopped going to speedway. Speedway has never fought back really either. It has just got left behind in the modern days.

KenB1
It particularly hurts me as I've spent virtually all my adult life living and working in East London and meet on a daily basis many people who went to Custom House but I sadly never did. Back in '72 I was just a 12 year-old living in Kent .! Derick it was 1972 Worth taking a look at ITV arcive website, put Dirt Track racing and Speedway in and you can watch 100's of old film from around the world. emerald tyke
Yes agree Pathe is a great website to watch old film of our beloved sport.....take a look at clip Eastbourne Eagles Trevor Geer and I think Barney Kennett? Also some more experts on here may be able to name more on the clip. lets see how many more can be named. Oh! and those masks!!! http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=74189

It's White City, of course... And that's GORDON not Barney of the Kennett bros!! Other riders shown in the pits cleaning their bikes are Richard Greer and Richard Hellsen.. Must be Press & Practice Day as the stadium is empty (no sarky comments please that that could mean it was a league match... ). Not year one with those race jackets I'd say..?? And certainly NOT 1970... Has to be between '76 and '78..

Cheers! Historic footage indeed then! No-one looked very cheerful did they..? And who's the geez who keeps putting his hand over the camera!? When one considers the great racing footage World of Sport showed which was thrown away, amazing that this Pathe stuff (clearly NOT in broadcastable format) has survived..! Incidentally isn't 1976 very late for Pathe News... I was a kid in the '70s (well, ten in 1970 etc.) and went to the cinema loads in that decade but can rarely if ever recall seeing any news reels..!! mickthemuppet
I do not know when Speedway was first shown on World Of Sport but I have all the Speedway on VHS from 1977 onwards from this programme,

According to Wikipedia they lasted from 1910 to mid 1956. Even more hmmmmmm!!!!!! I think you will find that British Pathe News finished in 1970 Warner Brothers bought the original French company of Pathe News and all their films and ceased making Newsreels for cinemas in the USA in 1956. Parsloes 1928 nearly
I think you will find that British Pathe News finished in 1970 Which sounds about right... So what's the derivation then of the clips this thread has been talking about - the last West Ham meeting and that practice session as White City reopened... - BOTH of which are AFTER 1970..? They're on the Pathe web-site so the people putting them together obviously feel they come from that company.. One can only assume they're actually made for TV broadcast... iris123
Whatever the case with the companies life span,i can't remember the White City being on the site a year or so ago.So hopefully they are still going through the archives and putting more stuff online.Good news if they can unearth some more gems.........would be great to see the 1927 footage of Billy Galloway going round Stamford Bridge Edited December 5, 2009 by iris123

Still before High Beech though. But, yes, that's the one we want to see.
miro
I dont know if its been discussed before, but I was interested in a couple of clips on the itnsource.com website - there's tons of good stuff on here including 1930s roller speedway and aircraft pylon racing. Searching 'motorcycle dirtrack' previews there's two clips from 1928, one of a meeting in Paris with Australian dirt track speedists as they call them, also a clip of a wrong-way-round meeting on a UK trotting track, the caption saying "England: Motorcycle Riot-Track racing at Blackpool... Dirt track terrors" Riot-Track racing! its certainly furious stuff. Anyone add any details of these two meetings?
