lucifer sam
Thanx Bazza!!! Any time for that beer!!! I wouldn't take too much notice of Rob, though - he slagged off the track EVERY WHERE that Oxford lost.. I remember well him constantly harping on about the "bumpy track" at that place in Kent where uniquely his lot were the ONLY Conference side never to record a win... What I miss most about Plough Lane '02 - '05 were all the good friends we had there, the friendly banter among the large crowd and the general sense of good feeling around the place. These are clearly things Rob wouldn't be missing from his also sadly sadly defunct track!! Parsloes, calm down and read my post again. All the best Rob
lucifer sam
Sadly that wasn't really down to us. We would have loved to have used the fabulous original track (used from 1968-1991) but that was tarmaced over and we had little option but to utilise the centre green. We couldn't go in any further either due to the siting of the drainage system. I agree that the bends were too narrow for the straights but we did see some terrific racing, especially from Buzz & James Wright (my favourite visitor to Plough Lane). Oxford were always good value on their visits, I recall the Dons sneaking a victory thanks to a last bend engine failure for either Chris Mills or Craig Branney in 2004. Happy days. Prodons - you're a year out, the Dons won 46-44 in 2003 after Millsy fell on the last lap, then Oxford won 48-47 in 2004 after a comeback in the second half of the meeting. Both great meetings, despite the limitations of the track. Yes, I realise the track wasn't really down to Wimbledon Speedway - you just had to fit in a track the best you could given the restricted area available. It was a crying shame, though - with a decent track to go with the stadium, Wimbledon would have been an ideal venue for meetings such as the ELRC, and maybe even a GP round. Mimmo
Hmm, here goes.. I, Parsloes (sic) being of sound mind (well that's wrong for starters!! ) do hereby concede that in the Peak District hides away an area known to postcard manufacurers as the 'Derbyshire Dales'. Most softie southerners like me have only heard of three types of Dales before: the more famous Yorkshire variety; Mrs Dale of Diary fame; and Jim, star of Carry On Up The Khyber.. Many thanks are due to ageing geography teacher M. Moseley esq. for imparting this life-changing new piece of information. The number of puns relating to Dales which will as a result be appearing in NL progs from now 'til eternity can, of course, be blamed on said Mr. Mimmo!!! Apology accepted Parsloes, what a noble gesture on your part, with so little prompting There is another Dale that you've conveniently forgotten, and that is that of the National League's No 1 team-manager (ut oh, way from a stream of abuse from Ponytail ) Mister Dale Allitt.......COME ON, BRING IT ON!! DaveG
The one thing that you guys have in common with the team I viewed at Wimbledon between 1974 to 1988 is that you were clearly having fun. I have learnt a lot about the end of the Dons on here and what an amazing list of riders appearing. Did you know it was coming to an end? Oh Sharon Stone and Beyonce are not in the Railway Children so some of your Stats are wrong I bought the DVD for nothing guys come on! Guest
Chris Schramm's 2003 appearances for the Wimbledon Dons. I thought Schrammy rode a challenge match early in 2002 for the Dons too - but I may have imagined that possibly...? I cannot remember if it was 2002 or 2003 (I am getting very old!!!) but I do remember meeting Chris Schramm (who was in leathers) in the Plough Lane car park and him telling me the meeting had been rained off. "We'll have a longer chat another time," he also said. Sadly, that never happened. Edited July 31, 2013 by Guest

Guest
One thing I know for certain Shrammy never rode a HOME meeting for the Dons... Maybe on the occasion you mention he was due to!! That would seem to be the case. The trouble is it was all so far back. What I do know is that despite heavy late afternoon rain I went to Plough Lane and when I arrived it was a bright sunny evening. By then the meeting had been called off although several riders turned up. Other spectators also arrived and like myself were disappointed to hear there would be no match on what turned out to be wonderful evening weatherwise.
