Classic At Newport

Recommended Posts

Well done to Boxhall. Very surprised he hasn't got a team on that form! Brent was good also, although he always is at Newport :)

Terrible with the business of Ben Hopwood... As if the cold wasn't enough he kept ruining the meeting!

Pleased with Mellgrens performance :) Looks like he will be good :D

I'm happy that Steve won the meeting. Maybe someone will give him a place as he had bad luck at Belle Vue. I think he could do a good job for any Premier League club

You mean the Steve Boxall who's last club was Poole in the Elite League?

I would not class steve Boxall as an elite league rider, riding for an Elite league club does not make you an elite rider, as much as standing in a Garage makes you a mechanic , Steve rode his socks off today and was Superb a well deserved WINNER

Disappointed with the predictable withdrawals at short notice and the poor standard of replacements. It made for most races with at least two national league riders against premier / elite opposition. (Not the riders fault who stepped in at short notice I know) The meeting got better as it went along with the first few heats a stop start affair. I would have thought it more sensible to have put riders off 25 metres for tape offences rather that the inclusion of Ben Hopwood who only succeeded in delaying things further. Although not a lot of passing there was some reasonable racing and it was good to see the old place crowded. Anders Melgren got better as the meeting went on and his last race burst around the first bend was encouraging. Boxall, Werner, Barker, Doolan, Puk, Melgren, Wilkinson and Mads were the pick of the bunch of the very mixed field with the former two doing themselves no harm in obtaining a ride next season. Well done Steve Boxall and bring on the team racing.

Ben Hopwood was very unlucky! He tried hard and wasnt even on his own machinery!!

As for the meeting itself, well as expected the meeting was fairly tedious with very little to talk about, but having attended these meetings over the years, the weather and track condition normally dictates that. It annoyed me greatly the amount of withdrawls last minute and therefore the product was affected, again not unexpected in these meetings though.

Now on to the positives, the crowd looked pretty big, and it was great to see Adam Roynon back on a bike, even though he looked very tentative (which is totally to be expected) hopefully he can get back to where he was as the new season progresses. Steve Boxall was terrific today though and for me deserved his victory, he really attacked the track and gated consistently well. Although his average may not be that high at PL level, on todays form he could do a great job for either Worky, Somerset or Rye.

Ben Hopwood Fx, Fx, 0, X = 0

Doesn't always tell the story as we well know i like yourself would be interested from anybody who was at meeting if he was on the pace until his falls

Yes, in Hopwood's case the figures don't quite tell how bad the performance was, He fell twice in his first ride, remounting after the first tumble only to come a cropper half a lap later. And no, he was left way behind at the gate and was well off the pace all the time that he wasn't well off his bike.

However, (very) young British "Talent", was on display aplenty. Only problem was that mixing kids who look like they are still strangers to a speedway bike, with the Iversens, Boxall's and Doolans of the world, doesn't make for competitive racing. It also peeves a lot of people who, with reruns included, had to endure over 30 races in cryogenic conditions, because the novices kept on falling off, causing race stoppages. Not that all fallers were novices as Messrs Roynon and Mills will admit to, but on the whole it was the kids wot did it.

However there are plenty of people who would support riders like Hopwood, Tom Young, James White Williams and Daniel Henderson being given their chance...maybe they could do a good job in the Rye House team that is crying out for 3 more riders? Come to that, I wonder if former Rockets skipper, Brent Werner could have ridden his way to a new Silver-plated contract?

Not the best of meetings but that was to be expected with the baltic weather.

A great crowd in excess of 2000 I would say.

Boxall was on fire. A deserved winner and will surely get a place somewhere. His lack of machinery may let him down as he was on a Nick Mallett bike today. Brilliant all day and a fine winner.

Anders Mellgren impressed. Got better as the meeting went on and looked as if he will mix it at the PL level.

Iversen looked good until his final ride. Surprised he didn't make the final. Korneliussen didn't look very interested when at the back.

The track was poor to start but with this cold weather, it was never going to be rip roaring racing.

A good crowd and a nice little earner for the promotion. :approve:

Report to follow on website before midnight.

Well Done Steve, you still have to beat those that are their. Make this your spring board for 2010.

Get your machinery right, and chase riders round, give each meeting 100% best of luck!.

trouble is he was on one of the mallets bikes which are always of a good standard which alas he won't be able to take elsewhere
