iris123
I'd imagine that a significant proportion of the SGP television audience is in Britain, so a SGP without a British rider would not be a easy sell. Don't know what the viewing figures are like in other countries, but again that probably influences the nominations.I imagine tv companies/audiences influence nominations. But i also imagine what a rider can bring to the GP in terms of personal sponsorship also plays a part. Not everything you hear from people in the sport has to be true, but i did hear that one rider in particular was chosen over another because he had better sponsors
spook
I think Ole's announcement this season is no coincidence considering the appalling level of racing at times this season...... and for no visible reason! The power structure is an interesting one and I look forward to the day when things are revealed 'John Berry style' ..... but ultimately it makes no sense for a company like IMG to have a product (and they do have to see it as a product dont they?) where the very things that attracted fans in the first place have slowly been removed.. I really wouldnt be suprised if they were responsible for speeding up Ole's departure I still find it amusing that no one can just come out and say what the issue is.... why the tracks are being kept slick...... maybe it is the advertising?? maybe it is to stop rain offs? maybe it is to satisfy one egocentric's vision of what speedway should be?................ ultimately though there are very easy ways to keep the advertising clear of spray.... and there is equipment, knowledge and science which may cost some pennies in the short term but would potentially stop rain offs and more importantly massively increase the chances of decent racing when there is no rain (=fans=crowd+tv=money)........ I dont buy that Ole is simply a messenger....... I am sure that relations between Ole and IMG are good ...and it has been said that he is in his GP role first and foremost at IMG's request............. but once he is in that role he is able to influence a huge amount of varying individual factors and was possibly allowed to have too large a stick to wield.......the same stick that we clearly saw wielded before BSI trotted along.......... lets also not forget that Vojens has always had a reputation for being slick throughout its lifespan which is a fairly significant factor to consider I just hope that in 2011 i'm not here eating my words because the GP tracks have been liberated and exuberance has ended up causing too many debacles like the German and Swedish disasters in recent years ........ Ole imo has harmed world championship speedway in some ways but he has also been consistent and professional in other ways and they cannot allow themselves to swap one for the other once he has moved on
richsimpson
One reason to keep the tracks slick is to allow a smooth flowing meeting in the event of bad weather. Heavy tracks are more liekly to need major work or abandoning, slick tracks can have some more put on far easier.
oakdalepirate
I think with the hovering danger of injury the organizers can't risk the major speedway nations only having one representative in the series. I'm presuming that the british duo are likely to be Tai Woffinden and Chris Harris - there are arguments for and against his inclusion compared to other possible british nominees. Imagine if the only british rider got injured before Cardiff!. Surely that's too high a risk too take. Not sure how British Tai Woffinden is?. I'm sincerely hoping he doesn't qualify for that unsavoury blend of sportsman that deserts his country of birth in the arena of sport for purely mercenary means. I hope somebody will inform me that Tai grew up here in his childhood etc. I know he was born in Scunthorpe, but for example, are his parents of english birth?. If so fair enough and it's just a case of his family emigrating to Australia whilst he was a child? Thing that led me to thinking he was in reality Australian are his accent and the fact he was in the Australian pits (and wearing their colours) during the World Team Cup final. I notice the following on his website profile....Home: Perth, Australia....Favorourite Place: Mullalo Point Beach, Australia (geez! has this man never been to Skegness lol)....Favourite Music: Aussie Hip Hop....Favourite Sport: Australian Rules Football. Speedway's most current shocking example of disloyalty being the farcical example of Rune Holta. Holta's case being on the lines of so many US tennis stars who were born and spent their formative years in eastern europe only to bedeck themselves in the flag of convinience that is USA. It's too be hoped for Rune's sake Norway don't overnight become a good speedway nation and he misses out on representing them. Look at the recent historical examples in football where scores of footballers over the years negated their african heritage and played low grade national matches for France etc only to see their birth nations then qualify for the word cup as african football improved beyond recognition. Didn't initially notice that Poland only have Tomasz Gollob and Jarek Hampel, however, that does fulfill the commercial safety net for the nation. This is the most ignorant post i have read on this forum. And that's saying something.
manchesterpaul
This is the most ignorant post i have read on this forum. And that's saying something. OK i'll deal with your intelligently composed and brilliant example of constructive criticsm on a point by point basis. Firstly, let's move onto point number one....oops! there isn't one. I would forgive you this as a one-off lapse however a forum search of your most recent posts only produce similar levels of debating skills such as; "Have you been drinking?" "Christ, i can't wait til Weds night! " "LOL. Pathetic." "waaahhhhh. Oh diddums." "The way some of you go on! What a bunch of big girls blouses." "If Poole sold Holder i would possibly beat Matt Ford to a pulp." "Its abolsoltuely p*ssing it down in Oakdale, 20 mins from the stadium. Dont think it will be on." "Good to see the fat Bjarne booer getting a telling off though." "The rest of you are pathetic. The Speedway equivalent of ABU's (anything but United)." So in retrospect, i'll likely ignore or probably block all your postings. Edited October 12, 2009 by manchesterpaul
manchesterpaul
Whilst Sky were hyping up the upcoming final round of this years series - mathematically likely already done and dusted - my mind was wandering to 2010 and eagerly anticipating what could likely turn out to be the best series ever. There will be a minimum three way battle royal with Jason Crump, Emil Sayfutdinov and Nicki Pedersen. Looks like 'SGP 2010 - Best Series Ever' could indeed be so? The first GP was one of the best staged regarding the quality of racing. Hell! even the quagmire of a rain magnet that is Gothenburg produced a storming finish once conditions imporved. Nicki Pedersen is likely to improve. As mentioned in the original post Chris Holder and Jarek Hampel are proving good entertainment. Kenneth Bjerre one of the 'younger' brigade a big bonus. Gollob doesn't look to be about to do a 'Leigh Adams' (was going to refer to 'Leigh Adams/Greg Hancock' however the latter showed sparks of life in Sweden lol). There are about 7 or 8 riders challenging strongly and one wouldn't like to write off current cellar dwellers such as Hans Andersen mixing it up on any given day. Not sure how British Tai Woffinden is?. Hmmmm! this week's Speedway Star quoting our BRIT Tai 'The semi at Sheffield was rained off after 12 heats with Woffy failing to make the cut. “There was meant to be a ballot to decide which riders went where, but I could have gone to King’s Lynn,” said Tai, referring to the other semi-final venue. “It makes me wonder why I chose to race for Britain. I still can ride for Australia I guess, there’s nothing stopping me.” ' Edited May 13, 2010 by manchesterpaul
