Which Brit Should Get A Wild Card?

Recommended Posts

An excellent point Steve.. The perfect example indeed and how, as you say, in fact ALL World Championships work... :approve:

Including the SGP.There is a cap on how many Poles or Danes get selected which generally means one gets tossed aside so another can come in.......

Okay so we agree!!! :approve:

Plenty of posters have banged on about it needing to be the 'best 16 in the world' but as you say and Steve has brilliantly clarified that's NEVER the case, as a breadth of different countries need to be represented. In GB I believe that should be two and so now it's back to the title of the thread..: who should the two be..

I think Steve is getting himself in a muddle with lot of words........It has been stated quite often that there is never the best 15 or 16 riders. The SGP is run to make a profit and that mean riders are picked not only for their riding ability, but also their ability to attract fans,tv,sponsors.I and others have stated this umpteen times  Pretty sure i stated it in my post that you seemed to think suggested Lee Richardson is a worldbeater. So you carry on with going over old ground.........

Well there is COMPLETE mystery now, hence these threads and hence why I suggested the SGP bods actually publish a set number of riders from individual regions.

Britain choose one rider based on their national championship or national qualifier, plus (if they get enough slots) one of their own nominated riders. Other countries do the same. It's not that complicated!

Re smaller countries - that is what I had in mind for the organisers in holding back one or two slots for their own discretion, otherwise Zager for example would be stuffed.

but you could argue that a rider from India should be chosen - he comes from a big country - huge TV population, but he probably will be a rubbish rider and therefore shouldn't be considered for the SGP

I know this is exaggerating things, but the british wildcard situation looks similar, looking from the outside.

There are 16 riders worthy of a place before you'd consider a British place.

Also small countries and small speedway populations can still breed world champions.

I didn't say YOU were one of those who've said it should be the 'best 16 in the world'..: I said plenty of (other) posters have...

If you DON'T think Lee Richardson is capable of performing well at this level then I'm not sure why you suggest him as a GB 'pick'.. It's not as if in this case he needs the experience or is likely massively to improve...

If i had to pick a GB rider it would be Edward Kenett for sure

could you motivate your pick?

I mean is it because if his good performance in all three leagues or is it because his good score at this years GP at Cardiff?

Is having a British rider in the GP's really a commercial decision? I'm sure that the attendance at Cardiff would not drop off that much if there were not any Brit's. Supporters would still turn up to cheer on the rider from their team, like Swindon supporters have always followed Leigh Adams. I do not believe that any British rider at present is really up to GP standards & if there were none in them, it might shake things up enough to see something done to improve the standards!

Personally I wouldnt select any Brits for the GPs as none of them are remotely good enough. People keeep on talking about Lee Richardson but just because hes done well in Poland and Sweden that doesnt mean he will be any good in the GPs next year.

Edward Kennett for the GP series, I never heard something so ridiculas in all my life. Whoever next James Wright or even Chris Schramm  . I think its too early for Tai Woffinden even though hes had a good season, I feel next season he can be even better so 2011 would be an excellent chance for him

When I watch the GP on a saturday evening I want to watch the best riders showcasing this wonderful sport. I

would never class Scott Nicholls and Chris Harris worthy of being in GPs and I dont want someone picked purely

because of where they come from. I want to watch the best and sadly theres no British rider in that Bracket at the minute.

After ANOTHER shockingly poor showing by the two Brits today there can now surely be only one conclusion.

Harris is as dead in the water as a GP rider as Nicholls...: for 2010 it can ONLY be Tai or no-one...

Sorry but where is the proof that Tai can hold his own with the big guns on a regular basis infront of the biggest crowds in speedway?

Well I guess there isn't. But do you deny it's either him or no-one.

The two this year have been a total embarrassment. I'd bet my house on Tai doing FAR better in 2010..

I would totally agree it should be no one and maybe Tai is the best of the English lads just now. But definately not at GP level in my mind. The way Tatum and Pearson go on about him is all alittle OTT aswel IMO. Its going to be an egg on face moment if Tai is put in next year and if found to be left wanting. Please remember this is only my opinion on it.

Let Tai have it, he's probably hungrier than the other two and he sure as hell can't do any worse can he? If he wants to experience GP speedway and has the back up to do it then ............

We could sit here all night long and reel off names of people who want to experience the GP but aint at that level. We shouldnt be wasting GP spots on riders that aint yet upto the task, regardless of nationality.

I wish people would stop pushing Tai for a place in the GP's. Great young talent, and I have no doubt he will be a quality rider in future GP series, but I really feel at the moment, they are a step to far for him. Let him concentrate on the leagues for perhaps 1 - 2 years, then if he is a consistent head leader across all leagues, he will be a cracking addition to the series.

It is a similar situation in football, when the senior players aren't doing the business, stick them in the team as they are hungrier, and play with no fear, however the detremental side of this can be a loss in confidence after a few poor matches. Same thing applies with speedway (i.e Nicholls & Harris). I also think it is alot to ask of the boy who facing overwhelming personal problems at the moment, and will have bigger things on his mind than preparing for a full GP series.

This is merely my opinion, and this subject has probebly been talked about to the point of exhaustion, but I thought I would add my thoughts anyway.

P.S If he does get the wild card pick next year, I hope my comments come back to haunt me and he has a fantastic series.

Good post.

I would say just look at Holder. Had the oppertunity to rush in but had the maturity to realise he didnt have the equipment and didnt want to be making up the numbers therefore declined it and had another year on the league scene and in my opinion will take a few big scalps in the GPs next year.
