League Of Nations

Recommended Posts

Most people agree that the GP series this year has been rubbish. The world Cup however seems to get better and better. When the riders are representing their respective countries it has to be said they have been fantastic.

Maybe, and i am just throwing this out there, but maybe Sky and the FIM should look at setting up a league of Nations.

Teams of 4 representing their country say once a month throughout the season and each team having a nominated home track.

Maybe have two pools, seed the teams and split the best ones over the two leagues and mix in the lesser nations.

Time it so after the GP series has finished, the top two from each league meet in the final.

I know some will say it would just be another world cup, but who cares if we see speedway like that once a month !

One important thing though, do not let Ole Olsen dictate track curation !

Interesting to know what others think.

It sounds ok to me, and also help get the EL so that teams only face each other once at home and once away.

I think the main problem would be fitting the fixtures into the existing overcrowded international schedule. I'm also not sure what format would be used, but a test match format would really only work for the five or six countries that would be competitive, and you'd still need to find at least 10 dates if everyone rides each other home and away.

Having a 4TT would allow for smaller teams and potentially allow more nations to be competitive, but a 4TT isn't easy to work in a league format unless you have 7, 8 or 16 teams. Furthermore, each team only gets one home meeting every four meetings, so there's the potential cashflow to consider.

Some sort of home-and-away test series over a couple of seasons might work though.

Yes, i was thinking more along the lines of the 4TT formula to hopefully include and encourage the smaller speedway nations. We have 8 to start with, from the World Cup, and surely even the USA could get a team up? Even it they use youngsters, it could be invaluable experience. Then you have the likes of Italy, Germany, Norway and Finland possibly ( dont know how many riders they have these days).
