Had some correspondence with Roger Johns recently who implied that Eddy was a gentleman and great rider and team mate. It seems that he may have taken to the bottle on his return to Poland ,and a new lifestyle far removed from the glamour of being a popular speedway racer, probably contributed to his downfall! Many of us in this recession know what it feels like to have a great job one day, be unemployed the next and the depression that comes with it, though I have not taken to the bottle yet!!! slickmick
Check out Issue 12 of Backtrack,Jan-Feb 2006. Popular in poland, I can't think of many other riders who have a statue as thier memorial.
star ghost
I feel sure Eddie's popularity will stand the test of time. At Wimbledon he became the big star of the team. He won the Internationale into the bargain. Among the Polish team men of the touring teams he would have been number one with only Tadeuz Teodorowicz to match him in the scoring stakes. I always looked forward to seeing him ride against Norwich and then Kings Lynn after the Firs was torn down. Another Pole who always put up a good show against us was Konstantyn Pociejkowicz but he never had a time here as a League rider like Eddie and Teo did
iris123
Yes Eddie was a great rider for the Dons.I didn't know and probably still don't know all that went on in his life after speedway. But i do remember a female Polish fan telling me rather frankly that he wasn't a hero in his domestic life........A sad end to one of the true great Polish stars.I went to the Jancarz memorial last year and saw the stadium.Missed the statue though. But was just talking about it a couple of weeks back.At the same time i met the son and grandson of Toni Woryna, who was another of the early stars.A very nice pair and i am keeping in touch with him.Sadly i learnt that Antoni died about 8 years ago.
