rabbit
As others have said, the best pair did win, having looked a class above through the qualifying heats. Impressed as others have been all season with Craig Cook. Can't wait to see him around the Wimborne Rd track tomorrow. Some nasty looking crashes throughout the evening and hope all riders aren't too battered and bruised today ...bit naughty of Mr Simmonds with his payback comments towards Mark Baseby, we don't need that in the sport. Can't complain about the Buccs performance...second was a fine effort and at one point i thought we'd struggle to make the final until Buzz's untimely exit from the meeting more or less gave us a chance in our last outing - Herne was on top form but just needed to appreciate the concept of team riding there a little more last night. Overall, an entertaining meeting spent in great company and very nice to meet Ancient Mariner. Stll can't decide what the biggest highlight of the evening was...Lucifer Sam in his canary outfit, or Arnie in his shorts.
Neil H
Congrats to Newport, pity Craig Cook didn't have better support. Yes, it was a pity that Jade Mudgway had to pull out as him & Craig could have been in with a real shot of winning. Still, it was a good performance to finish second in the harder of the two groups. philcrumpisgod
Heartiest congratulations to Tony and Grant in what is the first piece of club silverware for 10 years, (don't remember exactly when Scott Peglar's winning of the PL Silver Helmet was, might have been a year or so either side of '99 ). Well done to you lads and congratulations also to Steve and Nicky Mallett, after all the criticism levelled lately it's good to see that you have something to show for your hard work and investment in Newport Speedway as a whole. Parsloes 1928 nearly
Some strange goings on with helmet colours. In at least 3 races riders came to the start in the wrong colours. Yet the programme was correct, apart from a couple of gate errors. Ah right, so there were a couple (at least..) of heats printed in the prog. with incorrect gate positions... Considering that the person responsible for the prog.last night is the same person who made such a fuss (and hasn't stopped repeating this fuss for FOUR years ) when in the 2005 Pairs prog. there was ONE mistake (and that was in helmet colours NOT gate positions, BTW..) then may we expect to see a FULL apology from that person right now.. Trust when you got your munchies for the long journey home last night, Bryn, it was good old humble pie you had to eat..!!
lucifer sam
My parting shot for the night was to 'encourage' and debate on the programme, format, gates etc between Parsloes and Rob.Then walked swiftly away!! BobC, the irony is that it took me all of two seconds to make the changes to the gates for Heats 9 & 10. I'm now going to sit back and watch Parsloes make a big fool of himself... All the best Rob

Or were you a lot slower then...: I hope not coz you're pretty bloody slow on the uptake these days!!! No apology yet from Mr. Williams.... lucifer sam
I promise I WON'T mention 2005 Well that lasted all of one day. Still, carry on Parsoles, I like a good laugh, and you trying to compare last night's two-second repair job to the proggie to the mini-Chernobyl tippex-feast of 2005 (including the complete lack of an individual scorechart for the second half in that infamous proggie) is making me chuckle. Parsloes - incidentally, why did you cry off going to the bar after the meeting? I was up there with my money out ready to buy you a pint... wightlink flyer
Well, gotta say I really enjoyed last night. Well done to everyone who had a hand in making the eveny run smoothly. Talking points ?....well, the first for me was in heat 3. Did Adam Allot pull a "Bristol city"...when completely cutting off the 3rd bend by riding right across the football pitch in the centre green (when mallet retired) and yet still carried on to pick up 2 points for 3rd palce ? Surely riding across the centre green is against the rules?? Next one...heat 6...good to see Mark Simmonds stop and have a chat with mark baseby to see if he was ok following his fall.... Actually, had Kyle Hughes not had an EF in heat 18, B'mouth (sorry, Poole ) may not have made it to the final, as Plymouth beat them 5-4 in their heat. Obviously I am biased, but there were only 2 riders to go unbeaten all night....jay herne who looked great, and Nicky Simmons. I felt for nicky as it looked like IOW could have got a place in the final, but for Chris Johnson falling twice at the same place in his first and last ride. Had IOW scored a 7-2 in the last heat (and they were on it) they would have made the final in place of newport. And talking of newport, many congratulations to them. Both riders were full value for their victory, so well done to them. Mark baseby was "gutted" after the final heat, but he rode really well, especially after that heavy fall in his first ride and has nothing to feel bad about. Some good racing on show and a meeting I really enjoyed

BobC
I agree in Ht3,Allott did cross the white line. However,it wasnt his fault at all.Mallett stopped while in 2nd place, and drifted into turn 3,Allott had 2 choices, hit him,or head for the centre green! I assumed when Bryn announced that the ref was on the phone to the pits, and the delay to giving the result, was to check the facts.Common sense prevailed.imo. In Ht6,Simmonds did stop to have a word with Baseby, but he certainly wasnt checking his welfare. He told Mark and his Dad,that it was 'payback time' for an incident at Bmth on Thursday. Not what I would expect from a seasoned rider like him. Ht18.Maths not your strong point? When Hughes packed up,he was in 3rd place, that would have given Plymouth a total of 22pts.With Bmth getting 6pts from Ht20,that would have been enough anyway! Of course, had Plymouth scored a 7-2 in Ht18,they WOULD have automatically qualified for the Final, even if Bmth got a 7-2 themselves in Ht20. I hope Chris Johnson is ok today.Nasty tumble in Ht19 while leading.Seems he hurt his shoulder. Ultimately, the Best Pair won it. Newport fully deserved their victory. ancient mariner
For me it was a pleasure to meet (in no particular order) Bob C (yet again!), Arnie G, Parsloes, Mr & Mrs Rabbit. To meet up with those who are so genuinely committed to the sport and knowledgeable about it really does add to my day. May I have many more days thus. I would echo everyone else and say that the pair that understood what pairs riding is all about deservedly won - well done to Tony and Grant. Finally and sorry to be picky, but why should the BSPA involvement in this meeting mean that entry was £12 instead of £9 and the meeting programme was priced at £2.50 instead of the usual £2? I could understand it if the BSPA took that money and put it into the sport at the NL level, but I doubt that a single penny will end up benefitting the sport at this level. I am of course more than willing to be corrected and eat humble pie, please forgive me for my cynicism.

lucifer sam
Was that the same bar as everyone else Bobert, or did your sat nav let you down again... No, my sense of direction was working well and I was in the right place. But one problem - no Parsoles. Incidentally Parsloes, did you get the chance to buy Jeff Scott's excellent "Quantum of Shale" on Tuesday? All the best Rob

lucifer sam
Had the chance.... There's where you went wrong then. From buying Jeff's excellent book, you could have made the quick hop to the bar, where I could have bought you that outstanding pint. Common sense ??....is this the same same Bob "rules is rules" C, that is happy to see a 9 point rider at reserve all year, 'cos those are the rules? When did common sense come into it ? From where i was stood I could see Allot virtually cut a whole corner off as well as also hear every word Simmonds said to the stricken baseby..... Rules or common sense...leaving the track aint allowed Agreed...maths isnt my strong point .... A )...I thought reserves were the lowest scoring riders in the team..and B )....I though I said Plymouth MAY have made it to the final, as they beat Poole (oops, sorry...B'mouth ) in their heat !! At least we agree on one thing...the best pair won. Shame I didnt get to meet up with you....you could have bought me a beer.
