Latvia 2009

Recommended Posts

The track shape and size was good, but as far as racing goes- another borefest.

In Greg's words "follow the leader" racing, two adequate gates that provided the only wins of the night, two extremely poor gates.

The only reason no rider was dominating (as Tony Millard put it) was because you could only get anything from gates 1 & 4- so it didn't matter who you put into gates 2 and 3 (Crump, Emil, Gollob etc) they weren't going to get much for their efforts.

I ended up muting the commentary and then fell asleep halfway through

Well, seeing that no one (as yet) has blamed the (well what can we blame in lieu) track or Ole Olsen yet- lets blame the riders for not trying hard enough to make a race of it for us.

Life is hard being a speedway fan for christs sake. What has the world come to? Who can we blame?

Don't see anyone blaming anyone to be honest. But you can't argue with the fact it was a disappointing spectacle, with a ridiculous amount of disparity between the effectiveness of the gate positions.

Definately not the best GP I've ever seen, which is a shame because Cardiff was very good & the World Cup was pretty Damn good from start to finish.

I really dont see the point in this GP. Year after year its a bore fest. They only get a crowd of 10k plus its on TV at not such a good hour in the UK because of the time difference. If they have one in Russia, surely this one gets tinned? There are too many GP's at the moment, should be 10 rounds tops, but really could be cut down to 8 or so.

Not much different from "trailing at the back" which annoys me!

Four riders in a race - one wins, one comes 2nd, one comes 3rd and one comes 4th, but not necessarily "trailing at the back"!

No one comes last these days. It might give them an inferiority complex that could blight their lives forever

Isn't the Latvian GP one of the locally promoted GPs, where the financial risk is assumed by the club?

Yes.

BSI/IMG make a huge profit from Cardiff and as long as 40k plus punters turn up at Cardiff they really don't give a toss about the rest.

I'll be honest - I watched 3 races in this GP.

Its a poor show when grown men throwing plastic balls at soft toys is more entertaining than a speedway meeting

Won some pennies on Bjerre coming 2nd though which was nice!

So the home promotion just runs the meeting like any other but doesn't have to pay out any wages to the riders but has to pay BSI to stage the meeting?

That about spot on.

The way I see it is that, if you can buy tickets for an event directly from BSI/IMG (or thro' their ticket sales agents) then that meeting is wholly run by BSI. ( Cardiff, Parken, Ullevii, Gelsenkirken etc, i.e any track that is not a Speedway Club)

If the meeting is being held at a Speedway Club and tickets are sold thro' the Speedway Club then that club rents the GP from BSI/IMG, keeping the gate receipts but BSI will pay the riders out of the rental money. BSI obviously benefiting from the revenue generated from TV coverage and Sponsors.(That's why the local adverts at these tracks are always covered over).
