moxey63
Miss Alice Hart was Belle Vue team manager in the 1940s and early 50s. Even today, female team managers are a rarity in speedway, but Miss Hart was in charge of a successful Belle Vue team during her tenure. However, there is little known of her – where was she born, her age, and whatever happened to her when she left the Belle Vue position? Could she still be alive today? Alice Hart was the general of the world’s famous speedway club during the sport’s boom times, but, in all honesty, little is known of her. Ron Butler
I read some years ago, Moxey, that when she retired as the speedway supremo she became a director of the parent company Belle Vue (Manchester) Ltd. This, as you will know, was the company that owned the speedway stadium, Kings Hall, zoo and amusement park etc. During her reign as speedway chief she was known as Miss A S Hart and insisted on being addressed formally I've no recent news of her though. Yes, she took over Sheffield in 1950 and changed the nickname to the Tars. Apparently this was very unpopular with the fans and the nickname reverted back to the Tigers in 1951, although Miss Hart was no longer in charge. Thanks for that I knew I had read about this part of Sheffield history.

There's never been a really great lady in speedway since the time of the legendary Miss Alice Hart. She ran the Aces superbly at a time when speedway was run on a proper club basis. And don't put forward a claim for Charlie Webster! Edited July 31, 2009 by speedyguy
star ghost
Another "Lady in charge", as they say, was Peggy Waxman and I think she was at Wigan, however she was not as well known as Alice Hart. There was yet another "Lady in charge" in the pits at Yarmouth Bloaters, but she was mechanic to Johnnie White, then became Mrs White when they got wed. I dont recall Johnnie blaming his mechanic when he failed to finish a race. Edited July 31, 2009 by star ghost

He became Johnnie in the 1947-48 era because there was "an original" Jack White (a pre-war rider) then with Sheffield. To avoid confusion, the latter became Jack D White. Careerwise, I would estimate they were very much on a par with each other. Edited July 31, 2009 by speedyguy
star ghost
Johnnie was at Hull for a time then joined Norwich and was sent to the Bloaters where he saw out his time. I think he might have been with Odsal before going to Hull. He passed on a few years ago on the East Anglian Coast at Lowestoft or Yarmouth As you say Johnnie and J D of Sheffield were about on a par. I think J D was in wartime Speedway at Belle Vue so may well have come under the eye of Alice Hart
