miro
Beryl Swain was a motorcycle road racer of the early 1960s who raced a 50cc Itom, and had the honour of being the first woman to compete in the IoM TT in 1962. She was a victim of the chauvinism of those days when her license was withdrawn. Her obituary in The Times in 2007 said 'she also flirted with 500cc bikes at Hackney Wick speedway'. Any memories of this? Edited June 28, 2009 by miro

Any memories of this? No, not really. I can recall both high profile road racers Barry Sheene and Dave Potter having a go there once though with the press on hand, must have been 1972, as Barry wore white leathers in '72 when riding for Yamaha on 250's. Don Smith was on hand to help out. Its possible that she may have taken part in the Silver/Middleton training schools there at the time, but without the press coverage. Barry's uncle Arthur rode some speedway at Brandon pre-war but I do not think he was that successful or had a long career with it.
