Cardiff The Greatest Show Earth

Recommended Posts

The British GP just a week away now and the biggest speedway meeting in the world. It seems to me that many people on this forum always wants to put the event down by moaning this wrong and that is wrong.

So I'm starting this thead just for fans who want tell of their good Cardiff experiances, please no moans (there are plenty of other threads for that) and lets GP week off to a great start

Any year that I don't get some drunken yob sitting near to me, someone waving a 6ft flag in my face every few seconds, kicking the back of my seat all night, up and down visiting the loo/getting yet another drink every 15 minutes so everyone has to stand up to let them get by......that's a good Cardiff experience. :approve:

Maybe your past it Gemini and need to stop the moaning and get into the swing of things or find a seat in the no air horn/standing/flags/drinking/toilet zone.

Sorry to disappoint you but I'm not past it, I'm into the swing of things and I actually love the air horns.

Perhaps I've just got a good bladder and don't need to be using the loo every half an hour so I don't need to be in the toilet zone either.

By the way I wasn't moaning - just describing what is to me a good Cardiff experience.

What makes a good Cardiff for me ?

In the town where I live, the place where I work and my friends, none are speedway fans. So going to a City where there are thousands of people that share the same interest as me is brilliant. Add to that the atmosphere, seeing kids with their faces painted, the loud Poles and the eye candy in Cardiff and its a great day out.

When you get inside and the riders start to appear and the music cuts in, then it really gives you shivers and this year for a change, we Wolves fans actually have one of our own riders in the line up and a possible winner in Fredrik Lindgren. (we dont count Nicki as ours)

So this year, I will be hoping to bump into a few of the names I have yet to meet as I will be in the PoW around lunch time with my wife who is also a non speedway fan. I just want her to experience the atmosphere of such a big sporting occasion and the reason why I love the sport so much.

So keep your eyes open for a larger than life, thug looking character wearing a TNT cap and if all goes to plan, a T Shirt I hope to be wearing that will show my loyalties on the day. One half will be in support of Wolves #1, Fredrik Lindgren and the other half for the amazing, Emil Sayfutdinov

7 days left now ...... cant wait

I really enjoy it (though sadly wont be there this year :( ) but its the experience of lots of people in the street supporting speedway which for one day makes you forget its not such a minority sport, the winding the Poles up when their heroes fail, the atmosphere, the air horns, the panto villian that is Pederson.

Its meeting people from other speedway teams and members of the forum - though usually Midnight Lady has done all the intros at Monarchs away meetings - its the build up to the start, the feeling that Im attending a big time event - yep even bigger than home meetings at Brandon....:wink:

I once tried to explain to a fellow ''speedway'' supporter about the ''flutterbies'' that I felt when I go to Cardiff --- it fell on deaf ears unfortunately! However I will be there and no doubt will experience the usual ''butterflies''

I will be cheering for Scott -- and I couldn't care a fig about what other English/British ''fans'' have to say :wink:

Word of advice. I'd give that one a miss this year being as your wife will be with you.

Going with Craiggy boy again is always a pleasure.Always remember going to the first one when he went as a wee lad-from the first time of crossing the bridge and his words WOW to seeing the stadium from the ouside WOW and WOW again and once he trundled up the stairs to his seat-WOW again and then the racing in a huge stadium-WOW again even if he had a stupid GP hat on his head, andf in recent years seeing him all grown up and mixing it with the friends he has made on his beloved sts site.

For him Cardiff is something very special and something he looked at wide eyed as a young kid and to see him still as excited to next weekend as he appraoches his 18th is something special indeed-He looks after me now!!!-It may not be jetting off to Disney Florida etc but it is our yearly look forward to must do event weekend-Hopefully persuading gemma to partake in 2010 so she can get the WOW factor to0-but at the moment she would rather perfect her hair straightener technique!!!

We cant wait-first live speedway since last year and a chance to meet up with old aquaintances since Exeter closed a few years ago!!--bring it on.

Hope everyone enjoys it-especially those going for the first time with their kids.

Normally bump into Summit and Gemini either on the streets or down stairwells and eventually once you introduce yourself Gemini recognises you and send you off on your way with best wishes wondering who the hell was that!!!:P

Cya there.

Replace 'wife' with 'girlfriend' and 'lunch time' with '2ish' and you've copied me

The whole experience from the build up on the day, the entertainment and of course the racing.

This meeting is the show case event of our sport, a chance to see all the worlds stars in the same meeting all going for it, this meeting does alot for british speedway in my view and long may it continue! :approve:

Cant wait :D

I couldn't believe it when I first experienced The Cardiff Speedway onslaught..

The atmosphere around the streets and outside the pubs and around the Stadium is carnival..

I've been stood outside the City Arms and can hardly hear myself speak with all the airhorns and rowdy Poles around. Everyone is so friendly and you end up chatting with some great people.

I love seeing all the different fans wearing their team colours.. :approve: Cardiff is the pefect venue, you can enjoy the day in the Centre then wander into the Stadium and they have the organisation really slick..

It's great to meet up with old friends, in fact since I've been writing this - I've remembered what a great weekend it is... can't wait :D

That was mine and James' first impression too Nevs......from the moment we arrived at Reading services to see all these other coaches and cars full of speedway fans to seeing Cardiff and the stadium in the distance, to walking through the city (and getting lost trying to find the stadium..not once but 3 times!) and hearing all the air horns, to walking into the stadium for the first time and marvelling at the size of it to the sheer noise of the air horns once the racing begins.

Since then of course, we have discovered the delights of meeting up with other fans and this year for the 3rd year, staying over instead of taking the one day coach.

James still comes with me and it has got to the nice stage now where he is old enough (and big enough!) at nearly 16 to take himself to the loo and get drinks...that first year was a pain in the bum having to escort him to the loo! The other two want to come but we are both loath to allow this as it is nice to be able to be an adult and not have the full parent role for the weekend...something I would have to do if they came with me.

This year we are trying a 2 night stay instead of the one nighter and it light of the time change for the start of the meeting, I am glad we decided to do it...it would have been way too stressful trying to get to Cardiff, meet people and then go to the GP....oh and it means extra drinking time!

And yes, I am getting the flutterbies too....
