The point I'm making is patriotism to England IN England is fine if it's the ENGLISH GP. It's not though, it's the BRITISH GP. If there was a Scandinavian GP do you think the Danes and Norwegians would be happy if "Come on Sweden" was played?

The reference to the BNP/skinheads was rhetorical......

So you think being patriotic to England is xenophobic? There's a world of difference between the two.

And since when have speedway crowds been known for their skinhead/BNP following? Or did you mean BSF?

 Sounds about right Snyper, the old girls are always the worst!

I understand where you're coming from Scottieboy, the England song was unecessary and out of order. It was the British GP, not English. Also did not see the need for the Welsh anthem in the British GP.

I dont mind the Welsh anthem as we are in Wales. Really doesnt bother me standing for it. I detest standing for god save the queen though :approve:

You can always nip to the loo, scratch your bits and be back in time for the racing if it offends you that much..

Hmmm what verse is it then. Its def one of them i was sure it was 3

this is the verse in question

Lord, grant that Marshal Wade,

May by thy mighty aid,

Victory bring.

May he sedition hush and like a torrent rush,

Rebellious Scots to crush,

The words to the "new" version are some what different but doesnt change my view on it. Just like many complain Flower of Scotland is anti English

You can't really compare the term Scandinavia to Great Britain. We don't have a Scandinavian flag or national anthem and the three countries don't have any political ties whatsoever. Sweden has had the Scandinavian GP for years but I always thought of it as just another Swedish GP. And I'm certain they have played Swedish music there as well, and I know they open with the Swedish national anthem. Maybe even more important, the wild card to the so called Scandinavian GP has always been given to a Swedish rider. Now this year we finally have a GP at Vojens again and they decided to call it the Nordic GP, because apparently a country can't officially have two GP's so they have to think of some other bogus name. But I'm fully expecting the organizers to treat it as a Danish event with our national anthem and the speeker to get the crowd pumped to support the Danish guys, not the Swedes or Holta.

Far too late for me to actually look it up, but I thought that it was used as a final verse...My point was more about the fact that it isn't used any more, and was actually only used very briefly, but then you already knew that ;)

I also have this nagging thought that the song was originally used by the Scottish Stuart Royal Family, but I'm probably wrong about that, and I'm sure Humphrey will appear some time tomorrow to correct me :D

I should probably also point out that I have little interest in the song, but that's more to do with my thoughts of the Royal Family rather than any former lyrics :)

Okay that verse was abandoned in 1745. Yes you read right over 250 years ago - thats nearly as long as the USA has been around!!!!!

God save the Queen is the national anthem for the UK - so its obvious it would be played - as well as the Welsh anthem which is where it is staged.

I really dont understand the problem with you not being able to be British???? and having to be totally scottish all the time.

Its like the football though - I guess you want England to lose all the time - even though I as well as most England supporters would probably say if we were knocked out we would support scotland - door doesnt seem to swing both ways.

I was born in England but I embrace as such that I am British due to having some scottish heritage...

no one is pure blood anymore and its like something out of Harry Potter.

I just saw "mock of the week" and they even said in it that the English are so tollerable in that we have to live with a load of countries in the UK who really seem to hate us but would fall on their arse without us.

Saying youd wipe with the Union flag is a disgrace as well and really uncalled for :(

Maybe you dont like the monarchy - and Im not totally for the heirachy anymore, but the alternative of a republic isnt really one that would suit us - yet people like you dont think of the consequences when spouting about how evil the monarchy are.

Typical bloody uneducated student protest behaviour about causes which are un-researched and un-thought of - but sound cool :(

TBF - If I had been born in Scotland, with all the bad history between England and Scotland over the years, I'd call myself Scottish and not British too. Just like I don't like the French - not because of anything a frenchman has personally done, more because it's a dyed-in-the-wool, deep seated feeling, probably due to the 100 years War.
