FOR one night only some of the up and coming junior riders on the speedway scene take centre stage at South Tees Motorsport Park on Thursday, 11th June at 7.30pm - and there is a real international flavour with competing riders from the UK, Australia and even the reigning U21 New Zealand Champion!

Redcar Bears rider Arlo Bugeja and former Middlesbrough Bears rider Stuart Swales will be amongst the favourites to win it for they have the most experience. Bugeja is now in his third season and will no doubt be looking to improve on last year's showing when he went out at the semi final stage. Swales, now in his mid-thirties, last rode at Glasgow in 2002 but has invested heavily in new equipment. Fans with longer memories will remember his famous dive bombs at Cleveland Park with Paul Bentley back in the early nineties. Swales has experience with Bradford, Cradley, Long Eaton & Newcastle.

Fans of the much missed Redcar Cubs will be delighted to learn that three former riders have accepted invitations to appear; Greg Blair, Scott James & Jade Mudgway. Greg has recovered from appalling injuries: a dislocated elbow and a broken leg to maintain a reserve spot in the Premier League with the Berwick Bandits. Both James and Mudgway rode here last season and James was often an inspirational captain for the Cubs as well as making occasional reserve appearances for the Bears. Mudgway from Featherston, Wellington, New Zealand, finished second in the New Zealand U21 championship and recored a seven point average for the Cubs last season. Both now ride for Buxton in the National League.

Whitehaven-based Craig Cook appeared in this meeting last year and showed glimpses of his potential having switched from motocross. He has recently been appearing for Workington's Premier League outfit at reserve and scored impressively at Glasgow.

Travelling all the way from Newport in Wales are Shelby Rutherford & Grant Tregonning. Rutherford is being mentored by former Middlesbrough Bears favourite Dave Cheshire and was originally earmarked for a team place with the Cubs whilst Tregonning beat Jade Mudgway to the New Zealand U21 title during the winter and has been posting double figure scores for the Newport Hornets in the National League.

Based in the north west are Ben Hopwood and Jack Hirst. Hopwood was runner-up to Joe Haines in the British U15 Championship here in 2006 but has found success hard to come by with a succession of clubs. He currently rides for the Isle of Wight and has suddenly started to show the promise he had from four years ago. Hirst appeared here for a few second halfs last season but often appears at Belle Vue in junior racing.

Newcomers include Workington-based James Cartmell who attends training schools & grasstrack rider Jamie Rodgers from South Yorkshire who is the current U21 Champion.

The meeting reserve is former Cleveland Bays rider Peter Johnson.

I'll be watching with interest how Jamie Rogers fares cause he is awesome on the grass and someone I'd think could do well on the speedway!

He rode for the old Sheffield Prowlers team posting good scores and looking a good bet to move into Sheffields PL team but then just stopped!
