Brummie Kev
Birmingham won after a poor first round but didn't Pakistan do that in cricket world cup the other week. I suppose it happens in all sports. Well done to them. At the end of the day, you have to do it when it counts and we did that today. I can understand why people think the system is unfair but as you say its like it in most sports and in the PL pairs in previous seasons. Najjer
Surely that wouldn't matter at the Mecca of overtaking? As proved in the first Semi when he totally missed the start and rounded both Comets on the 3rd and 4th bend. Cool as you like. I wasn't there but from the updates it sounded a poor meet , by that no passing. Hope Shane is Ok. Don't be so inept, just because the texter hasn't sent through each pass for the updater to put on the updates site, doesn't mean it didn't happen. For someone to sit at home and say it was a poor meeting is beyond a joke. Admittedly it wasn't as good racing-wise as last season but it had a hell of a lot to live upto, but that doesn't take it away from being a decent meeting which if you was there, you might of been able to see for yourself. Well done Brummies, they were awesome in their last 4 races. At the end of the day, you have to do it when it counts and we did that today. I can understand why people think the system is unfair but as you say its like it in most sports and in the PL pairs in previous seasons. Everyone knew the system at the start, and it's the same for everyone Edited June 26, 2009 by Najjer
mervjankefanclub
Not true. It used to involve seven teams in the classic pairs format. I recall going to Newport in 1999 when it was run under that format. James Grieves apart from a diabolical exclusion in his first heat went through the card. Edinburgh came nowhere as Kevin Little was injured early on. I appologize, I cant remember that format, how many times was that used From 75 to 94 (excluding 91 - 93) it was the semis and a final, and with the exception of 1994, it was 16 clubs who took part. Think the pairs was re-introduced in 1997, did they use the 21 heat format from then for a few seasons Maybe a reintroduction of the 7 man/21 heat format could be used, that way you could have two qualifiers and all the clubs can have a crack at it. simon
Did King Kramer bottle it in the final? Yep and unlike Johno who was trying to overtake, just trailed in last
Pinny
Not a bad meeting but nowhere near as good as 08. Brummie surprise winners but Lyons rode brilliantly in his late rides and the Piszcz head rode well too.
HeyJude
Just got back from Somerset, what a great night, well of course I'm biased cause we won, YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS WE DID IT. Well done Jason and Tommy you fought hard for it! How can someone who wasn't there critise the meeting? As far as I'm concerned it was a great nights racing by all riders some better than others but nonetheless a great nights racing with plenty of overtaking! Nice one to the Somerset supporters who were shouting for the Brummies when we weren't racing against them, and i'll give the guy his due (Tiny Tim) he was the first to grab hold of me and give me a congratulatory hug when we won! Speedway at its best!!! Just face it you lot when the chips were down, we won when it mattered most! Shame about Shane Parker, we heard he was ok just as we were leaving can anyone confirm this? PhilK
Don't be so inept, just because the texter hasn't sent through each pass for the updater to put on the updates site, doesn't mean it didn't happen. Well done Brummies, they were awesome in their last 4 races. Totally agree Najjer. It's so easy to slag off the meeting, as it seems a few armchair followers and those with an agenda have here But as a total neutral last night, although we were backing ex Fen Tiger Jason Lyons , I thought it was a very good evening's racing. Of course it was never going to match the 2008 running, as that was one of those meetings you are lucky enough to witness every few years. Like you say the texter choose not to comment on every pass, fair enough, but in 23 races there were geniune passes in 13, hardly say that makes a bad meeting!! The weather also needs to be considered here. We travelled up after Thursday night's Bournemouth v Isle of Wight meeting in torrential rain, only to be met by more the next morning. As we drove into Burnham about 2pm yesterday it poured again and rain was running down the street. But despite all this the track was in excellent condition and raced as fairly as ever. There was more than one line for riders and many used them. I hate to think what many tracks would have been like after all that rain, ours included As for next year, hopefully this meeting will remain at the Oak Tree Arena and for years to come, excellent set up, brilliant track, good supporters who last night were excellent in defeat and generous in their applause for the winners. Workington were announced as the 3rd place pair, but no one said why, I can only imagine it was due to points scored overall or from their group, both scenarios would have left Worky 3rd Hope the news on Shane Parker is positive and he is back racing soon. Merlin
Another excellent night at the Oak Tree Arena amongst fans from all over the country. Group A was dominated by King's Lynn and Somerset who, perhaps unfortunately, met in heat 1. Group B eventually turned into a straight fight between Workington, Birmingham and Edinburgh but Shane Parker's withdrawal before he'd got further than the first bend unbalanced it as James Grieves beat none of the other riders except Andrew Tully in the heat which arguably ended Edinburgh's hopes. Birmingham came from nowhere to qualify but, while King's Lynn and Somerset looked awesome and better than any of the other pairs in the qualifying heats, Workington continued to dominate their group and dropped only a single point in their four heats. When Darcy Ward thundered into Jason Lyons in the semi-final King's Lynn's hopes died. Why he was bothered about hitting the front in that heat is beyond me because all that mattered was not finishing last! Had nobody told him? With Topinka at the back at the time the Stars may not have qualified anyway but their exit seemed to open the way for Somerset to grab the title. Birmingham continued thier resurgence after their opening two races to see off Workington to the surprise of most (although not Brummies fans I suspect!). Of course at this stage with the track suffering the wear of 22 heats gating was everything. To the horror of the home fans, Somerset made awful starts in the Final as Piszcz and Lyons hit the front. Although Johnston made it through to second, Kramer never looked like grabbing the third place the Rebels' needed. It seems they are destined to always be the Bridesmaids and never the Bride! It was a great night with perfect weather to match and full credit to Somerset for their excellent staging which couldn't have been easy given the curfew and the length of time oit took to remove Shane Parker from the track. I so enjoy my visits to Highbridge and Burnham (although not the journey there). Thanks to my friend 'Ian' for doing the driving and to all the fans I ran into during the course of the evening which made it such a fantastic evening for me personally. Grand Prix? - Nah this is the big meeting for me. Oh....and of course congratulations to Birmingham on winning the event. After all those years in the wilderness well done to them - what a boost for all their loyal fans. Edited June 27, 2009 by Merlin

adz_mft
will say this before the final so no chance of a sour grapes comment, i have no doubt somerset have one of the best tracks in the country but would it not be prudent to hold the PL pairs on a neutral track, and if its friday before the gp lets say swindon for geographical reasons, and EL pairs on a neutral track say brum or kl as last year . or wherever. could be no chance of comments such as, ah well they only won it cos they were at home, not they won it cos they were the best pair on the night. looks like the final was run as i was writing, well done brum, glad jason fit for the final Have to disagree with you here.Somerset to me is one of the fairest tracks in the country, and 1 that most riders enjoy riding.I really hope the pairs do not get moved. For me Somerset is the best track in the country. As for the hometrack advantage,if it was that great they would have won it last year and this year. Anyway, the meeting yesterday wasn't as good as 08 (as expected) but was still a good meeting imo. Some great battles between the riders.Contrats to Brum, who deserved their win.Lyons was class Lynn getting knocked out in the Semis, then Worky given 3rd made the night even sweeter
Shadders
nice one brummies, hope bluejam is having fun.Had a good chat with him before the meeting as he was holding a pint of cider in each hand ...... He was later seen with a couple of pints of bitter (one for Paulco he said), so I should imagine he had fun Huge congrats to the Brummies, especially honorary Rocket Jason Lyons ..... It looked grim for them early on as Tomas Piszcz struggled ..... At one stage it looked as though he was competing with Chris Neath for the lowest individual score of the night ..... Bluejam and UK Martin kept telling me he was is s*it hot form, which is why I backed them as outsiders to win. Huge crowd at the OTA, but the toilet facilities were inadequate ..... HUGE queues for both the gents and the ladies ..... Big thumbs up to the chicken curry, and the pork roast smelled fantastic, perhaps next time Good to meet up with loads of old speedway buddies again, including the ones at Walkabout in Cardiff after the meeting (we walked away from Jumpin' Jaks who were charging £12 admission!!), nice to meet Jay for the first time in the Walkabout ..... I hope Rico's recovered in time for tonight's GP Spotted loads of riders and assorted speedway people (mostly pointed out to me by B4E, I haven't got a clue ) including a very jovial Ronnie Russell and Bomber Harris out in the city centre past midnight (presumably heading for his hotel room and bed?) Van Helsing
The latest news on Shane is that he is out of hospital. He has NOTHING broken. Thank gawd for that! However he does have some quite serious bruising and is in a bit of pain. I imagine it will be like the Grieves incident earlier this year. Take him a few weeks until he gets back on the bike. Nevermind Shane. A few JD's and Coke will sort you out All the best.

Seb the Snail
Well done to the Brummies - as posted they seemed to come from nowhere to steal the title, but all credit to them for doing so. Lyons rolled back the years on several occasions (much to the delight of Pints or Points) and Piszsz looked solid too. They both made great gates in the Final to all but seal the Rebels fate. I fully expected Heat 1 (Somerset v Kings Lynn) to be the final heat as well, but Ward's reckless move on Lyons put paid to their chances, after he and Topinka had looked all over the winners after breezing through the qualifiers. Doolan and Rymel proved as good a pairing on the track as they looked on paper, and were always in control of Group B. The Fish blew hot and cold for the Monarchs, and his final outing last was to prove costly for their chances, allowing the Brummie to go through. Best of luck to Shane Parker after his awful spill in Heat 2. The flying bike collected him a treat, so if the rumours that it's only bruising are true then he's a lucky boy. Grieves confirmed Paulco's prediction that he doesn't like the Oak Tree at all, so the Tiggers evening was over before it had even begun. Tom Brown came in and plugged away, but there can surely be no one harder to deputise for than "God"? Anyway great to see The Oak Tree so packed, and plenty of familiar faces dotted around the track. Nonetheless a word of caution on which to finish - the "Thatcher's Traditional Scrumpy" really should come with a Health Warning! And who's bright idea was it to charge £3 for 1, £5 for 2? Talk about death by a thousand apples! Edited June 28, 2009 by Seb the Snail
