norbold
I turned on the Grand Prix a bit late last night and the first words I heard were, "Disappointment for Nicholls." And I thought, yes, that just about sums up: i) Tony Millard ii) Scott Nicholls iii) The state of British Speedway iv) The GP series So, well done, Tony, for summing it all up so succinctly in just three words. KEITH M
Millard is nowhere near the actual stadium we see on TV, he is most definitely in the Sky studio's... He said last night after the race when Gollob had problems with his bike, he didn't know if he had completed the race or not
Orson Welles
Actually, it is a decent question to ask how Millard got the job in the first place. He really is quite clueless - I remember last night getting really confused while filling in my race card when Millard announced that AJ had both won the heat, and finished third! Maybe this was a result of some quirk of quantum physics... To recover from an evening's SGP 'entertainment' spent in Millard's annoying company, I like a bit of football. If I'm not a game on Saturday afternoon, I like to watch Jeff Stelling's Soccer Saturday show on Sky. By and large, this show is an example of how to do sports programming; the host is witty, the contributors are knowledgable and everyone is passionate. Just one problem; at some point, Stelling will come up with those dread words: "...and now, with the latest news from Carrow Road, here's Tony Millard!". At that point, I start throwing popcorn at my TV screen. Actually, during his football reports, it would be interesting to see what would happen if one of the teams Millard was watching included an Australian player born in Mildura. He'd probably explode, particularly if the player was only 19 years of age!

Parsloes 1928 nearly
The man surpassed himself this evening.... was it me. or did he say that Nicki P couldnt qualify for the semi final, even though it WAS the semi final we were watching, with Nicki P in it??????? He actually repeated the error about qualifying for the semi when it WAS the semi FIVE times in the final two laps... Surely they have producers don't they Sky, who tell him to stop repeating this infantile error... My abiding thought on his performance though weren't on his gaffes but how disinterested he seemed in proceedings.. I don't watch the GPs much but was pleasantly surprised by the quality of racing and amount of passing; but Millard barely raised a moment of excitement at ANY point... Come on, hyperbole and hysteria maybe we don't want but a little bit of excitement in the voice at least might help..! Overall I'd say the WORST sports commentary performance I'd ever heard (apart from that daft bird allowed a couple of times to take a game on Match of the Day!! )

Surely they have producers don't they Sky, who tell him to stop repeating this infantile error... this is an age old problem with Tony...... sometime around 4 heats from the end of the heats he becomes completely obsessed with who will make the semis ............ nothing wrong there as it is fairly key.............. but he becomes so obsessed that he actually cant see the woods for the trees and ends up ruining race commentaries with semi final facts which are actually fiction..... and then to the extent of ruining the semis as well! my neighbours know when this is happening only too well

barrow boy
I still prefer him to Nigel Pearson. I agree he repeats things a lot but so does NP who I think is more monotonous and irritating and is quite frankly not entertaining 'Without A Shadow Of A Doubt' 'If It Stays Like This'

johnc
I have commented about Millard on this thread (and others) in a light hearted way joking about his favourite 'lines' during commentary. However, on a serious note - I would never say he is terrible (or Pearson for that matter). I have always been of the opinion that you never notice a commentator when the racing is of a good standard, it's only when the racing becomes boring that a commentator comes under the microscope. With this in mind, I think anyone would have a hard job trying not to repeat themselves during the first couple of GP's we've had. Having said this, I still laugh when I hear "every turn of the wheel" and "ding dong battle"

IW08
and of course, who can forget this one as he says almost every grand prix he commentates on: "And that man Rune Holta, the norwegian born Pole, who now rides on a Polish licence." I didn't know that
