DaveJustice
Hi All Quick intro so that this question doesn't seem completely from left field! My name is Dave Culley and I am a friend of Kim Jansson. As most of you will know, Kim had a horrible accident last year which left him paralysed. A fund has been established for him and I've previously sold a few items through ebay to help contribute towards this. This brings me to the Sunbrite World Team Championship! Kim was in England this week and whilst visiting the Ipswich Witches a very kind person has donated a trophy which they have said can be auctioned off to raise money for Kim. It has the following written / engraved in the middle : Sunbrite UK Round, World Team Championship 1985 Winners I've searched around the web and trawled through a few of the retro speedway sites, but I can't find any mention of this at all. There are a couple of items on ebay that mention Sunbrite but the Wikipedia entries on the World Team Championship show it being held only in the USA, with no British round, although there was one in Bradford in 1986 it would appear. Can anyone shed any light on what this Championship was, and any links to evidence of (I presume) a Witches win? Thanks in advance, Dave PS On a personal note, anyone know what/who Sunbrite is/was?! Grachan
Sunbrite was (is?) a type of smokeless fuel. The company sponsered British Speedway at that time. If the final was in USA that year then it's probably from a qualification round. Can't be more helpful than that I'm afraid. I notice Britain made it to the final, so presumably did it through this round. Jeremy Doncaster and Richard Knight were in the team in the final, so that would give an Ipswich connection. chunky
Round 1 was held at Bradford, on May 12, with the competing teams being England, Australia, New Zealand, and Finland. England won (with 42 points), and the scorers were : Kenny Carter 11, Jeremy Doncaster 11, Kelvin Tatum 11, Phil Collins 9, Chris Morton DNR. Richard Knight only appeared in the final at Long Beach. DaveJustice
Brilliant info, thanks guys. I think I'll try and find a programme for the event, it would be good to be able to provide some provenance to the trophy when I sell it. If someone wanted to display, would also be good to have with it I reckon.... Thanks again!
