Edward Barrett
Just seen elsewhere that Nicki P has been axed by his Polish club, anyone able to verify this, and if so is this another pointer to the mess that speedway world-wide is in as a result of the recession? How many of the superstars that fled these shores this winter may find that they've jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire?

How many of the superstars that fled these shores this winter may find that they've jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire? Think that is the wrong take on the situation. The Polish clubs hit financial trouble and wanted to re-negotiate the agreed contracts for this season.Nicki refused to agree to a lower pay deal.So basically pulled out rather than being axed, imo. Seb the Snail
I wouldn't call it "sacked" as it just seems that Czestochowa tried to reduce his salary give the economic situation, he refused, and they couldn't find a compromise: Story Here I can't imagine that he'll be out of work too long. Edit: beat me to it tomaspozrl. Edited April 4, 2009 by Seb the Snail
AndyM
So if nobody is prepared to pay Mr Pedersen the money he feels he wants, he will probably end up riding for nobody and much the poorer. Will riders start to discover the hard way the impact of the recession and to downgrade their expectations?

Will riders start to discover the hard way the impact of the recession and to downgrade their expectations? The season isn't even underway yet------maybe when a club finds themselves struggling they might decide Nickis wages are not so bad after all.But imo,Polish speedway looks very dodgy at the moment.A lot of the clubs must surely be in hock what with those fabulous looking stadia they have recently built

Edward Barrett
So, not for the first time in a couple of seasons he has priced himself out of a club. This time round he may not find it so easy to get another set-up. Nicki is a brilliant rider, but surely he should have a bit of common sense to acknowledge that you have to adapt your demands to reflect the economic climate. If you are too greedy, or appear to be too greedy, you will lose out. Nicki was, and has.
Trees
He obviously thinks he doesn't need to race in that league ..................
Dekker
So all he has left is Denmark and Sweden?
SpeedwayTShirts
Plus a very healthy bank balance which means he can hold out for as long as he likes. I dare say Nicki Pedersen could retire right now and live very comfortably without turning another wheel ever in his life.
T.N.T.
Hopefully this will prove to the BSPA that no longer are the days around when riders can hold them to ransom on such high contract demands and they can now call the shots. Offer them a reasonable deal, possibly 75% of what they were on last time they rode, take it or leave it. The league can move forward with the riders that do want to race here like Lindgren, Holder, Batchelor, Woffinden, Pavlic, Kennett etc as future top stars. This country hasn't been able to afford the cream of the crop for a number of years now, so skim it off and let them find a regular pay cheque elsewhere if they can find it. Sweden made calls to reduce costs at the start of this season and Poland are doing the same. Russia have stopped all big money foreign riders from riding and pretty soon the likes of Nicki, Crump, Nicholls etc will be banging on the door wanting to return on their terms. Well sorry boys, as much as we appreciate the standard of riding yopu are all capable of, this country needs to be cost effective and that means any return would be on the terms offered - not asked for. The quote from Nicki said "I would not say that it will cost the World title." (emphasis added by me) but you somehow take this as him moaning that it could cost him the world title! When you sign a 2 year contract with a club, you don't expect them to renege on the deal halfway through it!

Especially if you don't need to.

Yep no doubt if a rider done it they would be hell to pay ..... i have doubt there will loads of clubs in poland who will pay the money and no doubt Peterbrough in England . Cornishfisherman
A number of folk both here and abroad have ridiculed British scene for not having all the top riders riding here week in and week out, however the warning signals of foreign teams paying big money have been flashing for at least a couple of years now and with the World Economy in tatters the 'chickens have come home to roost.' At least, in the UK the Promoters have, to use a phrase out of the Gordon Brown vocabulary, been prudent and British Speedway so far appears to be much the same as it was before the credit crunch, with possible savings made from absent friends who thought they were going to make their fortunes abroad. From what I have seen and heard this season the quality of racing hasn't suffered at all.

Thousands of people accross the world have had their contracts terminated or re-written, Speedway riders are no different.
