f-s-p
Has there ever been speedway staged in Lithuania does anyone know? If so where were the tracks?? Are there any active riders from there at the moment? Also has the Latvijan capital Riga ever had a speedway team or staged meetings?? Thanks! We went to Riga a few weeks back. Dont know about their speedway history, but there was a perfect location for a track right in the city centre next to the Via Baltica?. Here, on the left of the arrow. It's not a secret that the Swedes have pumped Latvia full of money and with the big CC now on Latvia is facing bankrupcy. So there might be a chance (if the money is there) to get the permissions and build a stadia on a very good location! All a dream of course, but still! Puma23
LATVIA (RIGA) Last meeting in Riga was in 2002. It was test match Latvia - Russia. Track was in no good condition so after the meeting track was closed again ;/ Teams like Rigatrans Riga and Celineks Riga rode in USSR league in 70' and 80'. Many riders from Riga rode in Latvian Championship. LITHUANIA About Lithuania I know that E. Weinbergas rode in Latvian Championship in 1965. I am also sure that speedway track was in Wilno. Probably it was in 60' or 70'.
Lake Bodom Comet
Thanks for all the info guys! I seem to remember reading about a Lithuanian rider who rode in the British League in the 1950's but can't recall his name. I think he was quite successful. It would be great if Riga could stage speedway again in the near future. Which stadium there actually staged the racing?? Am I right in assuming Wilno is Polish name for Vilnius?? I think as recently as the 1980s there was also speedway raced in Armenia(Yerevan), Azerbaijan(Baku) and Georgia(Tbilisi) in the old Soviet Speedway League. I doubt if there is any activity now though....

DonM
In Google Earth I found what looks to be a Speedway track in Riga. It's in a park area next to a road course and kart complex. Not sure how to link a photo so I'll post the coordinates. 56 57 53.80 N 24 13 51.75 E It's also possible to see it following f-s-p's link above. Drag the map so that it scrolls to the upper left and look for a label "Mezciems". The track is located just above near the small lake. Click on Katu on the upper left of the map to change to an aerial photo. On GE it looks like it could be active, possibly some type of car racing?? but looks like it should be perfect for Speedway. The neighboring country was Azerbaijan and the track was in tserkesk or something. They flew to an airport that had a name that meant "mineral water". The catch to this all was that he crashed in the meeting (like he so often did, it seems ) and broke his wrist. He then found himself at an operating room in a local hospital. The room had gravel floor!

They did have speedway in this town in Uzbekistan in the the days of the old USSR. By the way Latvian International Andrey Korolevs was born in Baku, Azerbajzan. S.B
Good topic for discussion. add my opinion. Lithuania never has speedway. there was no riders. no tracks. was just only basketball Greatest Lithuanian all time rider - Kjastas Puodzuks. He Lithuanian. but was born and raised in Daugavpils, Latvia Karlis Ezergailis - also Latvian Stadium in Riga is still there. Yesterday passed by and made a ritual. I always go over and look, if stadium not demolished - I mean joy. The speedway revival in Riga have minimum odds. practically zero Indeed Andrey Korolev was born in Baku and started his career in team "Hazri". at 18, he came to us and stayed in Daugavpils Edited December 17, 2010 by S.B

Big time team ride in the third. last USSR league. sometimes went into the second. but a lot of losing The strongest team rider was Sergey Baldin Sergei Darkin began his career in Fergana. His talent was spotted and he was invited to Togliatti. Еxactly "Mega-Lada" team from Togliatti made such famous rider The same like Korolev. Born in Baku. but the rider was in Daugavpils
Bavarian
Uzbekistan even had another speedway track in the late 1960's at Almalyk. Their teams rode in the USSR leagues of 1967 and 1968-1970. The Uzbekistan speedway clubs in the Soviet Union leagues were: "Uzbekistan" Almalyk (1967), "Metallurg" Almalyk (1968-1970), "Luch" Fergana (1977-1990). Romualds
No any speedway tracks in Vilnius (polish name Wilno)or anywhere. All the riders in 1965 and 1967 participated in the above meeting were motocross, enduro and et.c. riders. The situation was such, each republic had to be represented and doesn't matter, had they such discipline or not. It was a rule, that's why results not good. For,example in the end 70 - tne middle 80 Byelorussia was represented by ice-speedway riders (Zaycev, Duplev), Estonia (Potapenko, Savolainen) by longtrack riders. Romualds
No any chances to see speedway meetings in Riga. The owner of sport complex BSKB "Bikirnieki" doesn't see speedway there. The track for speedway is destroyed (track for carting there).Tribunes in a bad conditions, machine park is using for autoservice. Ex Riga's club "Celinieks" speedway riders can't do anything, mostly of them not in motosport, but some guys are working with motorcycles, have motorcycleservices (Boris, Matisans). The complex mostly works and has any income thanks to autosport meetings. But for this moment it's better, than 5-6 years ago, when was desiccion to destroy the complex at all and build houses in this area.
