SA Regards Tony Thanks for the details of Gerry Hussey's British speedway career. As usual, further queries now arise. Why did he miss the 1957 UK Season and I thought he was killed in March 1959. I have a note that reads: "Former speedway solo rider Gerry Hussey died as a consequence of a midget car crash which happened on Friday, 06 March 1959 night at Rowley Park track in Adelaide, SA, Australia." It appears that Hussey died in hospital the next day March 7 1959. Any clarification would be appreciated. speedy bill
gerry hussey a overnight sensation he popped up from nowhere, a very classy rider, and a good looking lad.he could have been a big star if he had lived, but he enjoyed what he did for what was sadly to short a time.got his autograph at belle vue he seemed like a nice bloke found time to chat with me and my mates.i would have been about 11 years old and thought it was great that a rider from another team had a laugh with us .he became one of my favourite riders after that sadly for to short a time i cried when i heard he had been killed. Looking thru some 1958 Speedway Stars it was reported that Gerry retired to South Australia after the 1956 season and stayed there in 1957. He was called by Leicester to replace Ken Mckinlay in 1958. Ken was reported as intending to stay in Australia in 1958 but then changed his mind! My mistake on Gerry's accident arose as it was the 1958/1959 Australian season which always causes confusion. with references to championships etc. as the season covers 2 years.
