John Miller
I posted on another thread that two of my closest friends are Charlie Mays daughter Lindy and her husband Jim. It suddenly struck me that although he had ridden for Saints, I actually don`t remember him as a rider or who else he had ridden for. Does anyone have any particular memories of him? arnieg
Charlie is long before my time, but his son Richard was my first boyhood idol. Richardi s alive and well and living in Southampton. I have been I regular contact with him since he bought my book I believe he will be paying a visit to Reading this week (he's providing some items for the Reading speedway exhibition at the Reading museum that opens in a couple of weeks) Edited February 9, 2009 by arnieg

peatbog
In the village of Bursledon where I grew up, the local hero was Charlie May. I can remember him riding in Grass Tracks, Speedway, and even a Motorcycle Gymkhana. Charlie rode for Wembley in 1946 and 1947. It was Birmingham in 1948, and then for 1949 and 1950 he was back in London, this time for Wathamstow He rode for Southampton in 1951. After only 7 matches Southampton closed and Charlie moved to Cardiff until 1953 when Cardiff closed after 12 matches. He then moved to Exeter for the rest of the season. It was back to Southampton from 1954 until 1956 when he retired mid season. I hope these details are correct, they are taken from "British Speedway Leagues 1946 - 1964" by Peter Morrish Edited February 9, 2009 by peatbog

I started watching Saints in 1956/57 until they closed. Thanks
