Mika Loppi and Jiri Nieminen are the Finnish U16's for the YTG. Loppi is the #1 Finn by a clear margin. Nieminen was also quite capable of holding full throttle in the Finnish season opener at Pori. Vili Hautala would have been a challenger for a place too.

Yeh good crowd and the opening League meeting seemed to be quite competitive too!

 

Despite the team championship being down to just 4 clubs hopefully they will each have a bit more strength in depth and it will make for closer racing and the title will go right down to the wire. Also good to see the feature in the fantastic SPEEDWAY SANOMAT magazine about the Finnish microspeedway project! With it up and running I feel it is definitely a step in the right direction. Who knows this season might just herald a revival in speedway in the land of the lakkahillo!!

Shame about the injuries to Lahti and Siltaniemi, but I do believe that if the tracks are kept in good condition, there's a very entertaining league for people to see this year. Main reason for this is the federation backed youth program that has allowed rapid progress for the youngsters interested in it. Microspeedway is a HUGE step forward and hopefully it will bring a lot of people on board our sport in Finland. We need them too...

No Finnish breakfast is complete without it and it helps breed good speedway riders!!

 

Very encouraging that the Finnish Federation is promoting the microspeedway, if it worked for the Danes then why not Finland. And with those long summer days and tracks in the forests I am sure there must be ample practice opportunities for young riders, something sadly lacking in GB.

 

Here's hoping the injured riders Lahti and Siltaniemi back on track soon...

Only one Extraliiga meeting this weekend at Lahti (sunday at noon). The round scheduled for Seinäjoki on saturday has brought a smile/anger on a lot of faces during the past week. First the authority moved the meeting, because the city said that no racing was allowed. This was of course against the rules, since no other team was involved in the talks. Then themeeting was again on for saturday, but the current info from monday is that it is re-scheduled to be ridden in late August. It's only thursday and I'm about to go offline, so we'll see what the weekend has in store for us!

 

There's a 80cc training camp currently going on in Lahti. They'll ride again tomorrow at Kuusankoski.

Mäkinen was involded in a three rider pile up in heat four. His bike was a total mess and the doctor didn't allow him to continue. Katajisto had ridden much better than his score suggests. Siltaniemi is back in action again and scored 11 after being in the same crash as Mäkinen and Eerikäinen.

Extraliiga yesterday at Kuusankoski. Aarnio and teemu Lahti both made a comeback from their injuries and did OK. Timo Lahti as fast as ever, Hautamäki look in total control on the soft yet smooth track. Mustonen seems to be falling behind on the others at the moment. Katajisto tried hard but somehow found himself in positions he could not recover from. Still, both he and Aarnio made pretty exciting last lap passes from the outside to score points.

Pairs Championship yesterday at Seinäjoki. Good racing with a last heat decider for silver. Mäkinen was really strong, if he could just sort out his gating he'd be awesome. Hautamäki and Laukkanen were always gonna win this one, like Hautamäki said afterwards it would have been simply embarrasing not to take the title at their home track. Katajisto was the fastest and now with new racing gear he not just play's the part, he looks the part too. Hopefully he'll get a chance to ride at Tarnow in the U19 final in two weeks.

Extraliiga yesterday at Kuusankoski. Aarnio and teemu Lahti both made a comeback from their injuries and did OK. Timo Lahti as fast as ever, Hautamäki look in total control on the soft yet smooth track. Mustonen seems to be falling behind on the others at the moment. Katajisto tried hard but somehow found himself in positions he could not recover from. Still, both he and Aarnio made pretty exciting last lap passes from the outside to score points.

Maybe he had something better to do? Kotkat has a pretty strong squad of riders and what ever lineup they come up with they are usually favourites. Laukkanen is also probably (still) the most expensive rider in Finland to have. Not the cheapest anyway, dont know it for sure but that might play a role too.
