For those Canterbury Crusader supporters! One of their best ever riders Mike Ferreira is currently living in Zimbabwe since retirement in 1986! He runs a land cruiser business having run a motorcycle Dealership until 2007! He has 3 daughters and is coping ok in spite of all the hardship in the Country!

In my view, and I believe the statistics back me up, Mike was the best rider ever to represent Canterbury. It's good to hear he's doing OK, but have you any idea what his old 'mucker', Denzil Kent is doing nowadays?

Mike is very pleased that people are still thinking of him, and it may take a few days to get an answer re Denzil, due to poor communications, as a result of continuous power cuts in Harare!Watch this space!

Thats exactly what Mike said about Barney in his last correspondence! I have to say Barney is definitely a character never to be forgotten and he brought people in through the gates! A certain Canterbury promoter did tell me that Ferreira was the best investment he ever made so we can dispute that one!!

Mike informs me that sadly Denzil was killed in a car crash. I hope this info is correct as I am relying on people in other Countries, and obviously wish the info was wrong!!

Sad to hear that, if true, Denzil Kent was always a favourite of mine when he visited Blantyre, when I was a youngster. Wayne Brown and Nigel Sparshott we two other favourites from the same era, sadly no longer with us

There's no doubt that Barney Kennett was/is Mr Canterbury Speedway, but I think even Barney would accept that Mike was the better rider.

On the subject of investing in Mike, the story goes that Steve Koppe actually wrote the cheque which took Mike from Glasgow to Canterbury when they (Glasgow) objected to him lining up for the Crusaders at Glasgow in 1978. How true that is, I don't know, but knowing Mr Ma............oh no, we've been there before haven't we Shazz?

A wee check of the yearbook, Kev, says that the transfer required an SCB enquiry and the Crusaders handed over a cheque for £350 to Glasgow..........a bargain, I am sure you will agree  It also says Mike turned up unheralded in 78 and tried to get into the Crayford team, and failed  He also tried to get rides at Hackney, but ended up at Bristol where, after just eight laps during an impromptu practice following a cancelled meeting, they sent him over to Canterbury and the rest is history.
