The 2009 Premier League Riders' Championship

Recommended Posts

Or ala GPs, have a mini series perhaps?

Something I put forward in 2007, but most people thought it was unworkable. Here was my idea;

Just sat here thinking of how to change the Premier Legue Riders Championship, and I have come up with this idea.

It is in a Grand Prix style, so here we go. Take the top 15 riders from the previous season, not including riders who have move up to the Elite League.

In the case of last season these would be;

Zetterstrom Somerset

Havelock Redcar

Parker Glasgow

Compton Sheffield

Topinka Kings Lynn

Lyons Birmingham

Nermark Kings Lynn

Holder IOW

Boxall Rye House

Wright Workington

Ashworth Sheffield

Neath Rye House

Stead Stoke

Stancl Glasgow

Franc Newcastle

Every track would host a meeting on the lines of who ever scores the most points win the meeting, with the winner getting 16, second 15, third 14 and so on down to the last rider getting one point.

The 16th rider would be wild card of the host tracks choosing, this would mean that those tracks that don't have top 15 rider will still have some interest in the meeting.

In the event of a top 15 rider been injuries then his place would be taken by the next rider on the list from the averages from last season i.e. Makovsky of Berwick and so on.

Doing this you could see who is the best rider in premier, there would be no track advantage, as all tracks would be used.

Also I think that it would be easy to get decent sponsor, as it will country wide ranging from Edinburgh to IOW.

What does everybody else think, no doubt I hve missed something does everybody think it might be a goer let me know.

A round at every track is maybe a bit much to begin with it would need to start small and be expanded on IMO.

Even four rounds with the final at Owlerton wouldn't be a problem with me.

There is an issue with which riders take part.

I can see the logic in going with previous season averages.

It could also mean that some one like Ward could never have raced in a PL National event given his rapid success.

Great idea, let's get a petition together. Action speaks louder than words

What a joke that result was though. On a track that was in anyway neutral, Steve McDonald would've been nearer last than the winner.

No wonder so many people have had enough with the farce that is British Speedway. A rider that is no way near the top man in the league wins the riders championship?

The days of Stonehewer and Wilson in their pomp are a far cry away from what is currently on offer.

or newcastle or peterborough (neutral) or worky or somerset. seriously, although i do understand the neutral venue issue,i don't think ricky got the credit he desreves for stepping his game up to a level that i (someone who watches him every week) never thought he could attain.well done again ricky for proving me wrong ( i didn't think you had it in you)

He was simply brilliant on the day, in fact he rode the meeting of his life. Nobody can ever take that away from him

To take this debate to the ultimate extreme, just give the thing to the rider with the highest average and have done with it. Then nobody can complain. After all what's the point in having the meeting if the aim is for the guy who is most consistent home and away all season to win it.

Well done Champ! Best man on the day!
