Broken left femur apparently they were saying at the track - awful news for the Wasps but even worse for Wato in what was supposed to be his testimonial year. He had been absolutely flying today by far the top rider out there and his average of just over 6 was shot to pieces with 9 points from 3 rides. Devastating news, for everyone but most of all for him he had been so well up for it today and this season, a very proud man to be Captain of the Wasps and doing it for his good friends the Malletts. Gutted.

Mads withdrew with mechanical problems and Jason Doyle had a shoulder injury.

If confirmed then what a horrible way to start the season for the new Newport Wasps and for Craig Watson.Lets hope after checks at the hospital the news wont be so bad as first thought.

Mentioned on the hotline that its a broken leg, to be fare we were kept up to date with Watos condition during the wait.

Nice touch from Kevin Doolan when he was on the rostrum was to remember his friend Ashley Jones who started his racing days off at Newport.

Gutted for Wato, just can't believe his luck!!!

As for Kev, just shows what a top bloke he really is. When he went to get the Ashley Jones banner from the terraces after Lynn's league title win in 2006, it was one of those moments that will stay with me forever.

Absulate awful news for Newport and Wato. Was a horrible crash, and dare I say it but I said at the time it reminded me very much of the Garry Stead crash at Somerset which ended his racing career.

All the best to both Wato and Doyley.

Craig Watson, just like Adam Roynon, is another of those riders who have had no luck in recent years. After his previous bad crashes at Newport and Stoke he must have had high hopes that this year he would get a clear run back at his old stomping ground but it looks like it's not to be.

Best wishes to Craig for the speediest return to full fitness posible and to some decent luck!

I am a 1000% Brummies fan BUT, my two favourite Brummies riders last year wer WATTO and, PHIL MORRIS. Both atre absolutely BRILLIANT team men, out and out racers and entertainers. Both are also extremely pleasant blokes who always have time for the fans. Unfortunately. neither has had any luck with injuries of late.

Sadly, neither are in our team this season, much to the disapointment of many Brummies fans.

I am GUTED about the news of Watto's accident. Get well soon watto and if possible, come up and see us when Newport come to Perry Barr in a few weeks time.

I was impressed with the team Newport had put together and felt you were in for a good season. HOPE THIS IS ONLY A BLIP AND NOT THE START OF A SEASON LIKE WE HAD LAST YEAR.

These accidents today, along with the injury to Adam Roynon made me think. I've never ridden a speedway bike so I don't know, but it must be really good fun riding and racing speedway, or else why do these guys do it. The chance of serious injury, pain and broken bones it so high, and it's not as if there's big financial rewards. Speedway riders must have a special mentality, racing hard but when in reality the next crash could be literally just around the next corner. How do they manage to block this out of their mind?

I hope all the riders who are injured are back to full health as soon as possible and to entertain us once more. I saw Matt Read in the pits and that again made me realise how much speedway can change someone's life. I love following the racing and being at the track again after the winter was great but i'm quite happy standing on my side of the fence.

As posted, what a bitter-sweet day for the Wasps. No doubt it was great to hear the roar of the bikes again, but with injuries and the ensuing delays taking the gloss off the celebrations. All the best to Mr Watson for a speedy recovery despite the initial diagnosis. :(
